Chapter 48 - Black Comedy on Both Ends of the Phone

Dominic was enjoying a lazy afternoon, his legs casually propped on the desk, a can of iced cola in his hand. The phone suddenly rang. He glanced at the caller ID and raised an eyebrow slightly: "Oh? Why is this guy calling me out of the blue?" He picked up the phone and answered languidly.

"Dominic, my friend!" Justin Hammer's slightly smug voice came from the other end of the line. He seemed unable to contain his excitement, his tone full of self-satisfaction, "I heard you stirred up quite a show in New York again recently. Tsk tsk, how could I miss such excitement?"

Dominic casually took a sip of cola, responding lazily, "Oh, really? Looks like you're pretty well-informed, Hammer. But you didn't call me just for small talk, did you? Spill it, what kind of trick are you up to now?"

"A trick? Heh heh, how could I, old friend?" Hammer's voice carried that greasy confidence, as if he already had everything under control, "I have a big plan, oh yes, a big plan! I'm going to set up - cough cough, let's say, an 'Armor Exhibition Stand'! That's right, then, the eyes of the World will be focused on my new armor. Oh, this is unprecedented! You have to come and support me, I guarantee it will open your eyes!"

When Dominic heard the words "Armor Exhibition Stand", his eyebrows twitched slightly, and a meaningful light flashed in his eyes. He leaned back in his chair, gently swirling the drink can, as if he hadn't taken Hammer's words seriously at all: "Oh, 'the eyes of the World'? Sounds great. Then I really must see what kind of spectacle you can create. Don't disappoint me, Justin."

Hammer couldn't help but laugh on the other end of the phone, as if he had already imagined himself standing on the exhibition stand surrounded by spotlights: "Disappointment? Absolutely not, my friend. When you see my 'Eisenach Armor' series, you will understand what true power and innovation are. This exhibition stand will be a brand new beginning - for me, for Hammer Industries, for the whole World!"

Dominic listened to Hammer's exaggerated bragging, the corner of his mouth curving slightly into a cynical smile: "Alright, then I'll have to look forward to it. However, Hammer... you need to understand one thing. I'm a very picky audience. If your 'big plan' isn't exciting enough, I won't hold back."

Hammer on the other end of the phone was clearly unconcerned by Dominic's 'pickiness', and instead laughed even harder: "Hahaha, don't worry, Dominic. Excitement is absolutely guaranteed! As long as you come, I promise this armor exhibition stand will leave you speechless with surprise."

"Oh, really?" Dominic's tone held a hint of playfulness, "I hope you can give me a reason to be 'surprised' then. Otherwise, I won't waste my time on a few broken pieces of metal."

The two bantered back and forth on the phone, their words full of mutual probing. Although outwardly polite, every sentence held a hidden edge. Dominic knew Hammer's little schemes, and Hammer was clearly planning his own grand strategy. Before hanging up, they both agreed to "meet up" at the exhibition.

"So it's settled, old friend," Hammer said finally, his voice carrying that attempt to hide his smugness, "You will see a brand new Hammer Industries, one that completely surpasses Stark Industries, and a me that has completely surpassed Stark."

Dominic responded lazily: "Good luck, Justin. I hope you can successfully turn your 'dream' into reality this time. To be honest, I quite enjoy watching you brag."

After hanging up, Dominic shook his head gently, a hint of mockery flashing in his eyes: "A self-important clown. Hammer, Hammer... I hope you can really pull off something new this time, otherwise... hehe."

After Hammer hung up the phone, a smug smile appeared on his lips. He gently swirled the champagne glass in his hand, as if seeing a brilliant future. "Heh heh, with General Ross's support this time, as long as I capture Dominic and Abomination... orders, status, wealth, they're all mine." He muttered to himself, as if rehearsing his coronation scene in his mind.

He stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of his office, looking at the city lights in the distance, and a series of absurd and exaggerated images appeared in his mind: A bright spotlight shone on him, Hammer wearing a golden suit, holding a huge golden cup, thousands of spectators cheering for him below. The background music was a stirring march, and fireworks bloomed behind him like shooting stars.

"Ah, thank you everyone! Thank you for your support and trust!" In his fantasy, he stood in the center of a huge stage with a smiling face, waving to countless spotlights, a confident smile on his lips, "Hammer Industries will lead the World to a new peak!" He stood on the stage, holding the trophy symbolizing victory in his hand, the cheers of the audience echoing in his ears: "Hammer! Hammer!"

The scene shifted, and in Hammer's fantasy, he was sitting in a gigantic golden convertible, the roof filled with petals, followed by a long convoy of luxury cars, surrounded by countless celebrities and socialites, all vying to take photos with him. Onlookers shouted his name, as if welcoming a king. Hammer waved proudly, as if the World was under his control.

"Yes, this is the feeling!" Hammer smiled even more brightly, as if he could already see orders flying in like snowflakes, his bank account constantly swelling, and his stock price skyrocketing. And most importantly - the lights! The lights on the stage had to be bright enough to blind everyone, only then could he fully feel his victory.

Just then, his satellite phone suddenly rang, pulling him back from his fantasy. He was startled, then glanced at the caller ID. It was General Ross. Hammer immediately straightened up, adjusted the expression on his face, and put on a fawning smile: "General! Long time no see, I hope everything is well with you?" His tone was full of enthusiasm and flattery, as if the other party was some kind of high and mighty god.

On the other end of the phone, General Ross's voice was low and authoritative: "Hammer, what's the progress? I don't need to hear your nonsense, I just want to know if you can complete the mission."

"Don't worry, General!" Hammer immediately patted his chest, his voice full of confidence, "Everything is proceeding according to plan. I have made all the preparations. Just wait a few more days, and I will serve Dominic and Abomination to you as a feast! Ah, no, I mean, deliver them to you." He smiled like a schoolboy trying to please his teacher.

General Ross snorted coldly, but Hammer clearly didn't care and continued to babble on: "General, you know, as long as we capture them, our 'cooperation' will be perfectly seamless. Then I will possess the strongest armor technology, orders from all over the World will pour in continuously, wealth, status... one could even say, I will stand at the pinnacle of the entire weapons industry."

"Hmm." Ross responded simply, not saying much more.

Hammer seemed emboldened by his own words, his smile becoming even brighter. He even imagined General Ross smiling and nodding at him, as if they had become 'intimate' partners. "Then, everyone will see my glory! Stark Industries? Dominic? They are just stepping stones for me! I will surpass them and make them all bow at my feet!"

At this point, Hammer seemed to have thought of a brilliant idea, his tone becoming even more smug: "General, after we succeed, I can even hold a grand exhibition to display our captured 'trophies'! Dominic, Abomination, all put in display cases - no, no, hang them in the center of the exhibition stand, so everyone can see the power of our Hammer Industries!"

There was a brief silence on the other end of the phone, then General Ross's voice rang out coldly: "You'd better know what you're doing, Hammer. The result I want has nothing to do with your light show."

Hammer immediately reined in his smile and said cautiously: "Of course, of course, General, I understand! These are just extra entertainment items, the ultimate goal is still to complete our mission, haha..." He gave a dry laugh, but his mind was still filled with the images of lights, stages, flowers, and the cheers of countless people.

"Lights, applause, victory... I will have it all." Hammer thought smugly to himself, as if he was already in that glorious moment.
