Chapter 16 - Kiss Me When the Fireworks Bloom. (New-year's AU.)

The cake was an artful creation of sweetening that stood to view with mildly wistful expressions.

This was no average cake, it was a work of art. Delicate water colored shades of bright pink turn into pale pink in a gentle way where shades shade merge into each other. The top was slightly bumpy but seemed purposely made by hand instead of creating a total appearance of perfection over time. On the side of the cake were a variety of deep burgundy and rose-flavored florals stitched together to give them an almost organic feel instead of an actual designed look. In northern locations, crescents of moonlight float through thin, white frosting layers. The surface has a very "calm" feel about it. In fact, it looks as though the moon could be watching over the earth.

"I absolutely love it," said Sylvian, as he looked up at the moon with admiration.

There was a brief moment when Sylvian hesitated to think about cutting into the cake. Akiel looked at the cake and also the direction Sylvian was looking at with soft eyes.

"Certain things should be shared with others, and just because they are shared doesn't mean that they become less beautiful," Akiel said to him.

He then pushed the cake towards Sylvian and asked him to make a wish.

"How could I ask for something that is selfish? That's not right," was Sylvian's reaction to Akiel's statement as he took a long pause before answering Akiel.

With a genuine, innocent smile on his face and without any suspicion, Akiel responded,

"If you make a wish with an open heart, it should be done with good intent."

With closed eyes, Sylvian whispered to himself, "I wish to grow old with you."

At the same time, they both reached for the knife to cut into the cake.

Shortly before actually taking off their icing, fireworks lit up the sky in a massive burst of gold & red colors that exploded throughout all the city of Akiel's balcony. The display was so bright it reflected in the billions of windows surrounding Akiel's home, as the Universe chose to have a heck of a party on the momentous occasion.

Akiel let a small chuckle escape his lips, "Of course, I really meant that"–as he was currently slicing off about an eighth of the cake.

As soon as there was peace in the world and all was right again for Sylvian, Akiel took his finger and quickly dipped it into the frosting of the cake and gently placed it on Sylvian's nose.

Sylvian was in utter disbelief of what Akiel had done.

"Akiel."

"Yes, I did that," Akiel said, with a little indifference.

Without meaning to, Sylvian laughed at the act of such childish behavior from his partner, and at the same time he was filled with a warm feeling because he loved Akiel.

Sylvian responded, "You have no shame," to which Akiel replied, still staring into Sylvian's eyes, "and yet you are, and continue to be, so damn happy."

As fireworks illuminated the night and excitement filled the air, neither of their hearts was racing.

Each of them understood what was going on without saying anything.

They had slowly and gently come together, kissing slowly and purposefully, with their hearts beating as one.

Just for this universe.Just for tonight.
