Axel's silence made Evelyn even more nervous.
"Axel... I'm sorry if my words offended you," she said quickly, forcing a light laugh that didn't quite reach her eyes.
Still no response from him, Evelyn feels even worse about what she said. She lowered her gaze, focusing on her hands, trying to avoid his look.
"I just…" She softly whispers, enough for him to hear her, "You know, jealous... Ugh, can we talk about something else?"
"Eve," Axel finally said.
She looked up, startled to see him rise from his seat slowly, his chair sliding back with a faint sound.
Then he moved closer until he stood beside her.
Without another word, he knelt down, rested one knee against the floor, and smiled at her.
Evelyn blinked in surprise. "Axel, what are you doing—"
But before she could finish her sentence, Axel raised a hand. His index finger gently pressed against her lips, silencing her.
Her pulse quickened.
