Chapter 44 - The New Banker

Ryn leaned back in his chair, the hum of the forge and the faint glow of the holo-console casting angular shadows across the room. EP-Psi's avatar floated nearby, a shifting cube of light and alloy, its silent presence always unnervingly perceptive. Orders were coming in steadily, each vault cube leaving the compound like a silent predator sent into the wild, feeding their hidden siphons. The credits were flowing, the plans unfolding… but something niggled at the edge of Ryn's mind.

"I wish… we had our own bank," he muttered suddenly, almost to himself.

The words hung in the air. EP-Psi's eyes, or what passed for eyes in the AI's holographic projection, tilted curiously.

[EP-Psi]: "Excuse me?"

Ryn's grin widened, sharp and calculating. "I said… I wish we had our own bank." He laughed, a low, rumbling sound, as if the idea itself amused him more than the reality. "EP-Psi, you're brilliant!"

[EP-Psi]: "I… am?"

"Of course you are," Ryn said, leaning forward, fingers steepled. "And the reason you're brilliant is simple." His tone grew conspiratorial. "If we build our own bank… with the AI cube we've crafted, won't clients deposit their credits there?"

EP-Psi's projection pulsed, the shifting alloys reflecting a kind of cautious curiosity.

[EP-Psi]: "Technically… yes. Deposits could be tracked, managed, and protected. Your vault AI could extend its logic to banking operations. But… you do realize the implications?"

Ryn's grin sharpened. "I do. That's the beauty of it. A legitimate institution, sitting right in Kharvoss, under our control. The first bank this city has ever seen. And no one would suspect a thing. The cubes handle security, siphons in place, profits running silently… unnoticed."

[EP-Psi]: "You're proposing not just theft under the veil of legality, but full-scale financial infrastructure. Bold and reckless. Why would anyone trust a new bank?"

Ryn leaned back, spreading his hands as if weighing invisible scales. "Because it will look legitimate. The architecture, the branding, the front office… we'll make it a fortress of trust. People deposit their funds in a place that feels untouchable. And with the cubes? Untouchable it will be… for them. For us, it's the opposite."

[EP-Psi]: "And you want a schematic?"

"Exactly." Ryn's eyes gleamed, a predator calculating angles. "Step one: we secure a prime location here in Kharvoss. Step two: deploy a dual-layer AI network, public-facing for client trust, back-end siphons hidden like veins beneath marble floors. Step three: integrate the cubes into every vault, every safety deposit system. Step four…" He paused, letting the thought linger. "We let them bring their credits to us."

[EP-Psi]: "Step four is… profits. Untraceable. High-risk, high-reward. You're essentially proposing a private financial ecosystem with built-in embezzlement vectors."

Ryn chuckled, fingers drumming on the table. "Exactly. But… elegant, isn't it? Every client thinks they're protected, every vault cube looks like salvation… and we control the flow. We become the bankers, the vault masters, and the unseen siphoners of the city's wealth."

[EP-Psi]: "And the legal risks?"

"Legal risks are illusions," Ryn said, leaning forward, eyes sharp. "We'll be untouchable because no one will suspect. The bank will be above suspicion. Layered audits, ceremonial boards, a façade of legitimacy. Only we'll know the truth. Only we'll see the credits bleed into the right hands."

The AI cube floated closer, pulsing in rhythm with the hum of the forge.

[EP-Psi]: "You realize you're escalating from ghost architect of heists to kingpin of finance."

Ryn smiled, dark and satisfied. "And with this? With the cubes? We'll be untouchable, EP-Psi. From thieves to bankers… from shadows to architects of the city's wealth."

A long silence settled between man and AI. Outside, the rising sun reflected off Kharvoss' steel towers, glinting like coins in a vault.

Ryn rose from the chair, pacing. "Draw me a schematic, EP-Psi. Step by step. Front office, vault layers, cube deployment, siphon channels… every detail. We have the funds. We have the tech. We start here. This… this will be our empire."

[EP-Psi]: "Very well, Captain. Initiating schematic projection. Shall we name this venture, or will you leave that to your clients?"

Ryn stopped mid-step, smiled faintly, and whispered to himself, almost reverently: "The Bank of Kharvoss. And we own it all."

The cube shimmered in response, and the hum of new possibilities filled the workshop. Outside, the city moved unaware, carrying its wealth into the hands of shadows disguised as bankers.

Ryn's laugh echoed softly, low and dangerous: "The first bank of Kharvoss… and no one will ever know who really rules it."

Ryn leaned forward, his eyes glinting in the dim light of the workshop. The forge hummed steadily, but now it shared its rhythm with the soft pulse of EP-Psi's cube hovering above the holo-console. Vault cubes shipped out daily, credits quietly siphoned into their hidden streams, yet Ryn's mind had already moved far beyond simple heists.

"I want a full schematic," he said, his voice low, precise. "Everything. From the front door to the last bit of credit. Every layer mapped before we even pick a location."

[EP-Psi] pulsed brighter, projecting the faint outlines of a city block. "You intend to create a private financial empire, Captain. That is ambitious," the AI said.

"Not just ambitious," Ryn replied, lips curving into a sharp smile. "Necessary. If we control the flow of funds in Kharvoss, no one can touch us. And we'll do it cleanly… or at least, clean enough."

The cube shimmered and projected layers of holographic blueprints, each one more detailed than the last.

The front office occupied the prime corner of the merchant district. Polished stone and reinforced glass reflected the rising sun, signaling stability and trust. Holographic tellers processed routine transactions while VIP chambers waited behind discreet barriers, accessible only through biometric scans. Ryn traced a finger along the virtual lobby. "They need to feel untouchable. That's key."

Beneath the ground, the vaults were a fortress. Alloy-reinforced walls held caches of wealth, each storage unit embedded with a miniature AI cube. These cubes monitored every deposit, withdrawal, and transfer. "They'll do everything a normal vault AI would," Ryn said, "except for a few subtle channels we add ourselves."

[EP-Psi] shimmered. "Siphons. Targeted extraction of high-risk funds."

"Only the rich and dirty," Ryn corrected. "Limit the bleed. Keep it invisible. The poor, the ordinary clients earn 5% interest annually. Slightly more for the ones we want to keep loyal. Nobody notices, everyone trusts us."

The holographic layers expanded, showing the dual-network architecture. The public interface handled customer-facing transactions, fully auditable and transparent. Hidden beneath it, a secret layer processed siphons, monitored wealth classifications, and simulated audit compliance. The AI cubes cross-linked, forming a mesh network. Any anomaly in one vault was mirrored across all, though all alerts were carefully faked for client confidence.

Ryn walked along the projected paths of high-value clients, VIP brokers guiding deposits into carefully selected chambers. Ordinary clients flowed through the lobby, reassured by polished holographic interfaces and friendly, automated tellers. Interest rates, credit flows, and loyalty programs were all embedded into the AI's algorithms. Dirty funds trickled into hidden accounts, siphoned at controlled rates. Meanwhile, the poor and mid-tier clients received slightly above-market returns, cementing the bank's reputation as benevolent.

Physical security was no less rigorous. Reinforced vault walls, pressure sensors, and holographic countermeasures simulated breaches, generating logs of successful defense. The backdoor siphons were invisible to staff, audits, or even the most vigilant regulators. Only Ryn and EP-Psi could manipulate the flows.

Revenue projections were simple yet elegant: standard clients earned five percent, the poor slightly more, and the rich, particularly those with illicit funds, fed silent streams of wealth into Ryn's hidden reserves. EP-Psi constantly ran simulations, adjusting siphons, monitoring client behavior, and ensuring no pattern ever became suspicious.

Outside the workshop, the city carried on unaware. Merchants deposited gold, investors transferred credits, and the Bank of Kharvoss prepared to open its doors. Its first clients would step inside, reassured by security, convenience, and community-minded programs, never suspecting the empire building in shadow.

Ryn's eyes glimmered as he traced invisible siphon lines in the hologram. "Notice the flow," he murmured. "Only the accounts we want. The poor get better interest, the rich quietly feed us. The city believes in us, and we control everything."

[EP-Psi] pulsed in agreement. "Everything is accounted for, Captain. If executed properly, undetectable. Your empire begins."

Ryn leaned back, the faint smile of a predator stretching across his face. "Then let's begin," he said softly. And for the first time, the Bank of Kharvoss truly existed, its doors unopened, its fortunes already flowing, and its architect invisible in plain sight.
