Chapter 7 - Shadows and Secrets

Li Xiuying had been staring at the same page of Basic Meridian Theory for twenty minutes, but the words kept shifting into poison formulas.

She sat in the outer library, surrounded by other disciples diligently studying cultivation texts. To any observer, she appeared to be a newly advanced student catching up on foundational knowledge. In reality, she was fighting a losing battle against Chen Wulong's memories, which insisted on correcting every "inaccuracy" in the sect's basic alchemy texts.

Ridiculous, the poison master's voice whispered in her mind. Three parts Jade Lotus root, not five. These fools will poison themselves following such amateur instructions.

Li Xiuying gripped the book tighter, forcing herself to focus on the original text rather than Chen Wulong's criticisms. But the alchemist's knowledge felt increasingly natural, more real than her own limited understanding.

Thirty-eight hours until the next trial, she thought with growing dread. Thirty-eight hours until I become someone else entirely.

"Sister Xiuying?"

Li Xiuying looked up to find Han Meiling approaching, her Core Formation aura carefully restrained to avoid disturbing other students. The senior sister's expression mixed concern with curiosity as she settled into an adjacent chair.

"Senior Sister Han," Li Xiuying said, closing the book gratefully. "This junior greets you."

"I heard about your advancement," Han Meiling said softly. "Congratulations. Though I also heard Elder Feng has taken an interest in your progress."

The observation carried layers of meaning. Han Meiling was warning her about something, but Li Xiuying wasn't sure what.

"Elder Feng has been kind enough to monitor this disciple's development," Li Xiuying replied carefully.

Han Meiling's eyes sharpened. "Kind. Yes, that's one way to describe Elder Feng's attention." She paused, then leaned closer. "Walk with me. There are things we should discuss privately."

They left the library together, Han Meiling leading Li Xiuying toward the herb gardens where they'd spoken before. The afternoon sun cast long shadows between the medicinal plants, creating pockets of privacy away from prying eyes.

"You're in danger," Han Meiling said without preamble once they were alone. "More than you realize."

Li Xiuying's enhanced senses immediately sharpened, Mei Lin's tactical instincts assessing potential threats. "This disciple doesn't understand—"

"Elder Feng isn't just investigating your advancement," Han Meiling interrupted. "He's building a case. The sect has protocols for dealing with disciples who might have encountered forbidden cultivation methods."

The words hit Li Xiuying like ice water. "What kind of protocols?"

"Soul searching," Han Meiling said grimly. "Complete spiritual examination by a panel of elders. If they find evidence of heretical practices..." She didn't need to finish the sentence.

Li Xiuying felt her world tilting. Soul searching would expose everything. The system, the reincarnation trials, the foreign memories slowly consuming her identity. She would be executed as a heretic, her death serving as a warning to other disciples.

"Why are you telling me this?" Li Xiuying asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Han Meiling was quiet for a moment, her gaze fixed on a cluster of Moonlight Orchids. "Because I've seen what happens to disciples who stumble into things beyond their understanding. The sect's response is... rarely proportionate to the actual threat."

"And you think I've stumbled into something?"

"I think," Han Meiling said carefully, "that you're not the same person you were a week ago. The question is whether that change makes you dangerous or just different."

Li Xiuying studied the senior sister's expression, trying to gauge her true intentions. Was this genuine concern or another layer of surveillance?

Trust carefully, Cook Yang's warning echoed in her memory. But Li Xiuying was rapidly running out of options.

"What would you suggest?" she asked finally.

"Disappear for a while," Han Meiling said bluntly. "Leave the sect before Elder Feng's investigation concludes. Find somewhere to stabilise whatever changes you've undergone, then return when you can better control... whatever you've become."

The suggestion was both practical and impossible. Li Xiuying couldn't leave, the system's trials would continue regardless of her location, and she had no resources for surviving outside the sect.

"This disciple has nowhere else to go," she said honestly.

Han Meiling sighed. "Then you need to convince Elder Feng that you're not a threat. Demonstrate complete loyalty, perfect behaviour, absolute normalcy. Give him no excuse to escalate his investigation."

Thirty-seven hours, Li Xiuying thought desperately. I need to appear normal for thirty-seven more hours, then survive becoming an assassin without anyone noticing.

"Senior Sister," she said carefully, "hypothetically speaking... if a disciple encountered something that changed their cultivation but posed no threat to the sect, would there be any way to resolve the situation peacefully?"

Han Meiling's expression grew thoughtful. "Hypothetically? Complete transparency with a trusted elder. Full disclosure of circumstances, willing submission to monitoring, demonstration of continued loyalty. The sect values honesty, even about mistakes."

Unless the mistake involves practicing the most forbidden cultivation path in existence, Li Xiuying thought grimly.

They were interrupted by approaching footsteps. Chen Weilong appeared on the garden path, his Foundation Establishment aura pressing against them like an unwelcome presence.

"Senior Sister Han, Junior Sister Xiuying," he said with a respectful bow that didn't reach his eyes. "What brings you to the herb gardens this afternoon?"

"Discussing cultivation theory," Han Meiling replied smoothly. "Sister Xiuying has questions about meridian stabilisation after advancement."

Chen Weilong's gaze fixed on Li Xiuying with calculating intensity. "Ah yes, your remarkable breakthrough. The whole sect has been discussing it. Such dramatic progress after so many years of... difficulty."

The emphasis on 'difficulty' carried clear mockery, but Li Xiuying detected something else in his tone—suspicion mixed with opportunity. Chen Weilong was fishing for information he could use against her.

"This disciple has been fortunate," Li Xiuying said humbly.

"Fortunate," Chen Weilong repeated. "Though I heard some interesting theories about your advancement. Something about unusual spiritual signatures and mysterious circumstances."

Han Meiling's aura flared slightly, a warning directed at Chen Weilong. "Gossip is beneath you, Junior Brother. Perhaps you should focus on your own cultivation rather than speculating about others'."

Chen Weilong's smile turned predatory. "Of course, Senior Sister. Though I'm sure we all want to understand how such remarkable progress becomes possible. For educational purposes."

The veiled threat was clear. Chen Weilong intended to contribute to Elder Feng's investigation, possibly hoping to gain favour by exposing Li Xiuying's secrets.

As he departed with another mocking bow, Han Meiling's expression darkened. "He's dangerous. Chen Weilong has family connections to the inner sect hierarchy. If he decides to make you his target..."

"This disciple understands," Li Xiuying said, though her heart was racing. Another enemy, another layer of surveillance, another threat to manage while her mind slowly dissolved into fragments of foreign memories.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[HOSTILE SURVEILLANCE NETWORK DETECTED]

[MULTIPLE INVESTIGATION VECTORS IDENTIFIED]

[RECOMMENDATION: ACCELERATE TRIAL SCHEDULE FOR ENHANCED CAPABILITIES]

[NEXT TRIAL COUNTDOWN: 35 HOURS, 42 MINUTES]

Li Xiuying stared at the golden text in horror. The system was suggesting she undergo her next trial early to gain the skills needed for survival. But that would mean experiencing Lin Qiuyue's assassination techniques ahead of schedule, with no time to prepare for the psychological impact.

"Are you alright?" Han Meiling asked, noticing her sudden pallor. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

More like I'm about to become one, Li Xiuying thought desperately.

[EMERGENCY PROTOCOL AVAILABLE]

[MANUAL TRIAL INITIATION: ACCEPT/DECLINE]

[WARNING: EMERGENCY TRIALS CARRY INCREASED INTEGRATION RISK]

[WARNING: ASSASSIN SPECIALISATION MAY FUNDAMENTALLY ALTER HOST PERSONALITY]

The choice hung before her like a blade. Accept the emergency trial and gain an assassin's skills to survive the sect's growing scrutiny, risking complete personality dissolution. Or decline and face Elder Feng's investigation with only a general's tactics and an alchemist's knowledge.

Neither option offered true safety.

"Senior Sister," Li Xiuying said slowly, "what would you do if you discovered you weren't who you thought you were?"

Han Meiling's expression grew deeply concerned. "I would find someone I trusted completely and ask for help before I lost myself entirely."

Li Xiuying nodded, making her decision. In thirty-five hours, she would either be dead or transformed into something far more dangerous than anyone suspected.

The weakest disciple in the Azure Phoenix Sect was about to become a killer.

Whether she wanted to or not.
