Chapter 6 - The Observer

Li Xiuying discovered she could identify seventeen different poisons by scent alone while serving breakfast.

The realisation struck her as she ladled congee into bowls, Chen Wulong's expertise automatically cataloging the herbs Cook Yang had used for seasoning. Star anise, white pepper, dried tangerine peel—all harmless. But if someone added three drops of Jade Serpent extract to the ginger powder...

She nearly dropped the ladle as the unbidden thought completed itself. These weren't her knowledge or instincts. They belonged to a dead man whose memories were slowly consuming her mind.

"Careful there," Cook Yang said quietly, steadying Li Xiuying's trembling hands. "You've been jumpy as a cat in a thunderstorm lately."

Li Xiuying forced a smile. "This disciple apologizes. Still adjusting to the advancement, I suppose."

Cook Yang's sharp eyes studied her face with uncomfortable intensity. "Advancement changes people, child. But it shouldn't change them completely."

The warning was subtle but clear. Even Cook Yang had noticed the shifts in her behaviour, the way foreign mannerisms were bleeding through her carefully maintained facade.

As disciples filed in for their morning meal, Li Xiuying served with mechanical precision while her enhanced senses catalogued details she'd never noticed before. The faint tremor in Junior Brother Xu's hands suggested late-stage meridian poisoning probably from practicing forbidden techniques. Senior Sister Lin's spiritual signature carried traces of Blood Clarity Pills, indicating she was pushing her cultivation beyond safe limits.

Chen Wulong's paranoid attention to detail, she realised with growing alarm. I'm analysing everyone like potential threats or patients.

"Li Xiuying."

The voice cut through her observations like a blade. Elder Feng stood in the doorway, his Nascent Soul aura carefully restrained but still imposing enough to make conversations halt mid-sentence. Unlike Elder Wu, who managed outer disciples, Elder Feng oversaw sect security and investigation.

Li Xiuying's blood turned to ice. If Elder Feng was here, the surveillance had escalated beyond casual observation.

"This humble disciple greets Elder Feng," she said, bowing deeply while her mind raced through possible escape routes. Mei Lin's tactical instincts automatically mapped the dining hall's exits, identified potential weapons, assessed the elder's positioning.

Stop thinking like a general, she commanded herself desperately. Think like a servant who's done nothing wrong.

"Walk with me," Elder Feng said simply.

It wasn't a request. Li Xiuying set down her ladle and followed the elder from the dining hall, acutely aware of every gaze tracking their departure. By evening, rumours would spread through the sect like wildfire.

Elder Feng led her through corridors she'd never seen before, deeper into the sect's administrative heart. The spiritual formations carved into these walls hummed with power far beyond anything in the outer sections. Li Xiuying felt like an ant wandering through a giant's palace.

They entered a modest chamber furnished with simple chairs and a tea service. Elder Feng gestured for her to sit, then poured tea with unhurried precision. The ritual felt ominous rather than welcoming.

"Your advancement has been noted," Elder Feng said finally, settling across from her. "Three years of stagnation, then a breakthrough to Qi Refinement 2nd Stage overnight. Remarkable."

Li Xiuying kept her expression carefully neutral. "This disciple has been fortunate to achieve progress under the sect's guidance."

"Fortunate." Elder Feng sipped his tea thoughtfully. "Yes, that's one explanation. Though I confess curiosity about the... circumstances of your breakthrough."

"Elder Wu has already heard this disciple's account..."

"Elder Wu is responsible for outer disciple advancement," Elder Feng interrupted gently. "I'm responsible for investigating anomalies that might threaten sect security. Your case presents several interesting anomalies."

Li Xiuying's mouth went dry. She fought to keep her voice steady. "This disciple doesn't understand what anomalies..."

"Your spiritual signature has changed," Elder Feng said casually, as if discussing the weather. "Not just strengthened, fundamentally altered. The qi resonance pattern is... unusual. Almost as if you've been practicing a completely different cultivation method."

The observation was devastatingly accurate. Li Xiuying felt sweat beading on her forehead despite the chamber's cool temperature. Elder Feng's spiritual sense was clearly sophisticated enough to detect traces of the system's influence.

"Additionally," he continued, "several disciples have reported subtle changes in your behaviour. More confident, more observant, occasionally displaying knowledge or reactions that seem... inconsistent with your background."

They've been watching me systematically, Li Xiuying realized with sinking dread. Building a case.

"This disciple has been working to overcome years of self-doubt," she said carefully. "Perhaps increased confidence appears as behavioural change."

Elder Feng nodded as if considering her explanation. "Perhaps. Or perhaps you've encountered something that fundamentally altered your cultivation path. A forbidden technique, for instance. Or an ancient artifact."

The suggestion hung in the air like a blade. Li Xiuying forced herself to look confused rather than terrified.

"Forbidden techniques? This disciple would never!"

"I'm not accusing you of deliberate wrongdoing," Elder Feng said mildly. "But the cultivation world is full of hidden treasures and dangerous legacies. Sometimes disciples stumble into situations beyond their understanding."

He was offering her an escape route—a chance to claim accidental involvement rather than deliberate heresy. Li Xiuying's mind raced through possibilities. Could she admit to finding some minor artifact that explained her changes without revealing the system's existence?

Too dangerous, Chen Wulong's paranoid instincts warned. Any admission leads to deeper investigation. Demand proof, maintain innocence.

But Mei Lin's tactical wisdom disagreed: He already suspects. Better to control the narrative than let him construct his own theories.

The conflicting advice from her inherited memories created a moment of paralysis. Li Xiuying sat frozen, unable to decide which voice to trust, acutely aware that her silence was itself suspicious.

"I see the dilemma troubles you," Elder Feng observed. "Perhaps this will help clarify matters."

He withdrew a small crystal from his robes. A Memory Stone used for recording and replaying spiritual impressions. Li Xiuying's enhanced senses immediately recognised its function, thanks to Chen Wulong's alchemical knowledge.

"This contains a spiritual impression from the outer waterfall where you claim to have achieved your breakthrough," Elder Feng explained. "Curious thing about Memory Stones, they can detect residual energy signatures from powerful cultivation events."

Li Xiuying's heart stopped. If the stone had recorded traces of the system's activation...

"The impression shows considerable spiritual disturbance three nights ago," Elder Feng continued. "Far beyond what a simple Qi Refinement breakthrough should produce. More consistent with... shall we say, extraordinary circumstances."

He knows, Li Xiuying thought with cold certainty. Maybe not the details, but he knows something impossible happened.

[SYSTEM ALERT]

[EXTERNAL SPIRITUAL PROBE DETECTED]

[DEFENSIVE PROTOCOLS ACTIVATING]

[WARNING: EXPOSURE RISK CRITICAL]

Golden text flickered at the edge of Li Xiuying's vision, visible for barely an instant before fading. She prayed Elder Feng hadn't noticed the brief manifestation.

"However," Elder Feng said, his tone shifting slightly, "the Memory Stone also shows something else. The spiritual disturbance was... contained. Controlled. Almost as if whatever occurred was meant to remain hidden."

Li Xiuying frowned, genuinely confused now. Was he suggesting the system had somehow concealed its own activation?

"Natural phenomena occasionally produce such effects," Elder Feng mused. "Spontaneous spiritual confluences, minor heaven-earth events. Rare, but not unprecedented."

He was giving her another escape route, but Li Xiuying sensed a trap in the offering. Why would he provide explanations unless he wanted to see how she'd respond?

"This disciple experienced nothing unusual," she said finally. "Only the breakthrough itself."

Elder Feng studied her for a long moment, his Nascent Soul spiritual sense pressing against her consciousness like a gentle but inexorable tide. Li Xiuying held perfectly still, praying that the system's defensive protocols would protect her from deeper probing.

"Very well," he said at last. "You may return to your duties. However, you will report to me weekly for the next month. Standard monitoring for disciples who've experienced... unusual advancement patterns."

It was better than immediate execution, but barely. Weekly meetings meant sustained scrutiny, constant pressure to maintain her deception.

"This disciple understands," Li Xiuying said, rising and bowing deeply.

As she walked back through the corridors, Li Xiuying felt the weight of Elder Feng's attention like a physical presence. The investigation would continue, and his suspicions wouldn't fade easily.

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

[SURVEILLANCE PROTOCOLS UPDATED]

[NEXT TRIAL COUNTDOWN: 43 HOURS, 17 MINUTES]

[FRAGMENT PREVIEW: LIN QIUYUE - SHADOW DANCER]

[WARNING: ASSASSINATION SPECIALIST INTEGRATION MAY ALTER HOST BEHAVIOR DRAMATICALLY]

Forty-three hours until her third death. And when she returned from that trial, she would be carrying the memories and instincts of an assassin. Hiding her true nature would become exponentially more difficult.

Li Xiuying made her way back to the kitchen, where Cook Yang waited with knowing eyes and a fresh pot of tea that smelled suspiciously like calming herbs.

The old woman knew something was terribly wrong. The question was whether she would prove to be an ally or another threat in Li Xiuying's increasingly desperate game of survival.
