Chapter 256 — Konan and Nagato
They wouldn't wake up for a while, so they wouldn't be interfering anytime soon.
Although Uchiha Fugaku wasn't afraid of being discovered, he was wary of Nagato slipping away without a word.
If Nagato escaped now, Fugaku would have to sweep the entire world to find him — something he absolutely did not intend to do.
He was far too lazy to deal with unnecessary trouble.
Finding people was always the most annoying task.
Led by the Amegakure officer, Fugaku wound his way through the cramped, rain-soaked village until they reached a tall tower.
This one was larger and more imposing than any of the previous buildings.
It seemed the officer held considerable authority, enough to escort them inside without obstruction.
But that advantage soon ended.
They were stopped on the fourth floor.
Even with the officer's face and rank, they were not permitted to proceed upward.
Fugaku calmly activated his Sharingan again, casting genjutsu on the two guards.
They stiffened, their fierce expressions melting away into docile obedience, then silently took over the task of leading him upstairs.
The officer was kept conscious; Fugaku allowed him to continue following.
On the seventh floor, they ran into the same problem: two more stern Amegakure guards refusing to let them pass and even attempting to question them.
Clearly, outsiders were absolutely forbidden here.
Fugaku didn't panic in the slightest — he simply cast two more genjutsu.
The pair of intimidating guards instantly became harmless kittens, adding themselves to the procession.
But now their group was too large.
To avoid attracting attention from outside, Fugaku knocked out the two guards from the fourth floor and left them behind.
Finally, they arrived at Konan's office.
No one stood guard.
Fugaku instructed the Amegakure officer to knock.
No response.
After several tries, he had him push the door open.
Even after the officer entered, nothing stirred inside.
Fugaku glanced in — the office was empty.
He immediately questioned the two controlled guards about Konan's whereabouts.
Only then did he learn she had left not long ago, and no one knew where she went.
Fugaku didn't rush.
It was still early.
Konan wouldn't abandon her duties in the middle of the workday.
So he simply seated himself in her chair — like a patient hunter waiting for his prey.
The disappearance of multiple guards wouldn't remain unnoticed forever.
Within a few hours, someone would realize something was wrong.
But Fugaku currently had no other choice; without Konan, he couldn't pinpoint Nagato's exact location.
He could only gamble.
Maybe the Amegakure patrols would be slow today.
Maybe Konan would return quickly.
A stack of neat documents lay on the desk.
Fugaku picked one up casually and noted the refined, elegant handwriting.
"Her penmanship is pretty good," he murmured before tossing the paper back.
He lost interest just as quickly.
Fortunately, luck was on his side.
Less than twenty minutes later, the rhythmic click of high heels echoed through the hallway.
High heels.
In this restricted zone, it could only be Konan.
The three controlled ninjas had already been quietly knocked out and discarded nearby.
Fugaku held his breath, eyes fixed on the door, Mangekyō Sharingan silently active.
The moment Konan walked in, she would be caught.
The footsteps approached…
Stopped right outside…
And then the door opened.
Unprepared and unsuspecting, Konan stepped inside — and her gaze immediately fell upon Fugaku seated in her chair.
Their eyes met.
The instant she saw the glowing Mangekyō pattern, it was already too late to react.
The Sharingan spun.
The genjutsu activated.
Konan's expression of shock vanished, replaced by blank emptiness.
She stood still, transformed into a puppet under Fugaku's complete control.
Satisfied, Fugaku rose from the chair with a faint smile and walked toward her, gently closing the door behind him.
Konan had come alone.
Even if she hadn't, Fugaku wouldn't have cared; he could simply cast more genjutsu.
At this point, he still hadn't encountered anyone capable of resisting his Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan.
It was safe to say that, at this stage, his genjutsu was overwhelmingly dominant.
"Where is Nagato?"
He asked calmly.
Konan answered immediately — obedient and precise.
Once he obtained the location, Fugaku commanded her to lead the way.
Under the genjutsu, Konan responded flawlessly, becoming a perfect guide.
Fugaku followed behind her as they headed toward the secret chamber where Nagato hid.
With Konan at the front, the journey was unbelievably smooth.
No one stopped them.
In Amegakure, Pain was the symbolic leader.
But Konan — Konan was the true authority.
Everyone understood this.
---
Inside the Secret Chamber
Nagato was adjusting the laser cannon of the Asura Path — tinkering with its internal mechanism, trying to increase its firepower.
At that moment, the door to the chamber opened.
Nagato didn't look up.
"Did something come up, Konan?"
Only Konan had the key.
Only Konan would enter unannounced.
And indeed, it was Konan — but one under the full control of Fugaku's genjutsu.
Fugaku followed her inside.
Nagato remained bent over the machinery, unaware of the danger.
The Asura Path's head lay open beside him, its laser cannon removed and placed on a workbench.
Fugaku approached silently, Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan gleaming, Kotoamatsukami primed and ready.
"Nagato, turn around and look at me."
Konan delivered the line exactly as instructed.
Nagato turned — and the first thing he saw was the swirling Mangekyō.
His expression froze.
Before he could even trigger Shinra Tensei—
Kotoamatsukami struck.
Fugaku had used the Right Eye — the variant requiring continuous activation to maintain control.
If he dispelled it, the genjutsu would end.
The same eye Danzo once used on Mifune.
His Left Eye — the version that permanently rewrites consciousness — had already been used on Orochimaru, and was still on cooldown for another two and a half years.
