Chapter 29: I Want to Be a Hokage When I Grow Up

"Big sister, can I really eat this?"

Naruto swallowed hard, asking with hope in his eyes.

Sasuke rolled his eyes so hard he nearly activated the Byakugan.

This idiot! I told him not to call her 'sister'!

Mikoto smiled warmly and said, "Of course, Naruto. This is all for you."

Beside them, Fugaku announced, "I'm digging in!" and started devouring his own food.

He had originally intended to eat ramen, but that never happened—and now he was starving.

"Then... then I'm digging in too!"

Naruto's eyes lit up with excitement, but just as he was about to dive in, Mikoto gently stopped him.

"Naruto, go wash your hands first. You have to be hygienic."

"Oh, right!"

Naruto sprang up eagerly.

"Where do I wash my hands?"

Mikoto kindly led him to the bathroom.

Sasuke, watching this whole scene, was practically green with jealousy. He stared at Naruto's generous serving and thought about sabotaging it—maybe dumping some snacks into his rice bowl…

But one glance at his father's dignified face as he calmly ate killed that idea on the spot. Sasuke could only sulk in silence.

Soon after, Naruto dashed back into the room, grabbed his chopsticks, and shouted excitedly,

"I'm digging in!"

He immediately began wolfing down the food, his eyes shining with joy, as if he were tasting some divine feast.

Mikoto sat beside him, smiling gently.

Sasuke, observing this, suddenly had a very bad feeling.

Sure enough, after Naruto had eaten his fill, Mikoto poured him a glass of juice. Naruto gulped it down in one go, juice still clinging to the corners of his mouth. Mikoto reached for a tissue to wipe it for him—but Naruto wiped his face with his sleeve instead and exclaimed,

"I'm full! Thank you for the meal!"

Sasuke practically recoiled in disgust.

Ugh, so sloppy. So unhygienic!

He scooted a bit farther away.

Then Mikoto gently patted Naruto's head and said softly,

"Naruto, this will be your home from now on."

"Ah?" ×2

Both Naruto and Sasuke exclaimed in unison.

"My home?"

Naruto blinked in surprise. Then, remembering something, he quickly corrected himself,

"Uh—Auntie, I already have a home. It's at XX Road, XX Street, house number XX!"

Then he stood up suddenly.

"It's getting late. I have to go home, or Hokage Grandpa will scold me!"

On the side, Sasuke also voiced his protest:

"No way! I don't agree with Naruto living in our house!"

Mikoto glared at him.

Sasuke immediately shrank back, lowered his head—and then turned around and stomped upstairs, showing his frustration.

Mikoto didn't pay him any mind and turned back to Naruto, who had already reached the door.

Just as he grabbed the doorknob, Naruto suddenly slapped his forehead and turned around.

"Oh, right! Auntie, Uncle—you haven't told me who my mom and dad are yet. You said they were heroes who protected Konoha. Where are they now?"

Mikoto smiled knowingly, as if she'd expected this question.

She glanced at Fugaku. He nodded.

"All right," Mikoto said warmly. "Auntie will tell you now. Come, sit down first."

Naruto sat cross-legged in front of her without hesitation, his big blue eyes full of curiosity.

Mikoto took a breath.

"Your mother was named Kushina Uzumaki. She had red hair and was a very beautiful woman."

Naruto's eyes widened.

He had so many questions—like why his mother had red hair while his was yellow. Or why he had his mother's surname instead of his father's. His classmate, Shikamaru, had once said that most kids took their father's name.

But Naruto didn't interrupt. He wanted to hear everything.

Mikoto continued,

"Your father was Minato Namikaze. He was a smart, kind, and responsible man—and also an incredible ninja."

She smiled gently.

"He had a healing smile that could warm anyone's heart. His cheerful personality brought hope to everyone in the village."

Naruto blinked. Hope? Why would his dad bring hope to villagers?

As if on cue, Mikoto answered his unspoken question.

"Because your father was the Fourth Hokage of Konoha."

Boom!

It was like a lightning bolt exploded in Naruto's brain. His entire face turned red with excitement.

"My dad is the Hokage?

That's amazing! My dad is the Hokage!

I knew it! I knew they were lying to me. I do have a dad, and my dad is the Fourth Hokage!"

Naruto couldn't contain his emotions. He jumped to his feet and cheered.

Then he clenched his fists, eyes shining with determination.

"When I grow up, I want to be Hokage too!"

Mikoto chuckled and glanced at her husband, who was watching TV nearby.

"Good, good. Naruto is truly ambitious. Auntie believes you'll become Hokage."

Naruto grinned.

"Then, Auntie Mikoto… where are my mom and dad now?"

Mikoto's smile froze slightly.

Naruto noticed it immediately, and the excitement on his face slowly faded.

He was seven years old now. He wasn't a baby anymore.

Mikoto gently patted his head.

"Your mom and dad… they had very important things to do. They've gone to a very faraway place."

Naruto let out a small breath of relief.

As long as they're not dead… that's fine.

He smiled again.

"Then when will they come back?"

Mikoto hesitated, then answered softly,

"Auntie doesn't know. Maybe soon. Maybe not for a long time. But your mom sent me a letter saying she wants you to stay with us for now."

"Really? She said that?"

Naruto's eyes sparkled again.

"Of course. Would Auntie lie to you?"

Naruto looked up at Mikoto's warm, sincere face. He thought of the food, the snacks, the juice, and her kindness.

He shook his head firmly.

"Auntie wouldn't lie to me."

"That's right." She smiled. "Come on, Naruto. Go sit with Uncle and watch TV. Auntie will go prepare your room."

"Okay!"

Naruto happily agreed.

As Mikoto went upstairs, Naruto turned and looked at Fugaku, who was lounging on the sofa. He tiptoed over like a little mouse and scratched the back of his head.

"Uncle… I forgot to tell you—Hokage Grandpa told me I need to go home early."

Fugaku waved it off.

"Your Hokage Grandpa also went to a very faraway place for an important mission. Don't worry. Just stay here comfortably."

"I understand, big guy!"

Naruto sat down quietly.

Fugaku glanced over and saw that Naruto was pretending to watch TV, but his eyes kept drifting toward the snacks on the table. He even swallowed secretly.

Fugaku chuckled, grabbed a handful of snacks, and placed them in front of Naruto.

"Here. Don't be shy. Treat this place like your own home. Eat whatever you want."

"Thank you, Uncle! You and Auntie are the only people—besides Hokage Grandpa—who aren't afraid of me… and who are actually nice to me!"
