While we're still celebrating our victory, a gate appears overhead. A bony hand stretches out through the gate.
"Mass Expulsion," says the death rattle of the creature from the mausoleum. Everyone disappears. "That leaves only you, flesh-thing."
"Blackout," it casts a spell. The entire cavern becomes pitch black. I hear something pass through the gate, and the gate closes shortly afterward.
The darkness grows oppressive. It feels like someone is staring a hole through me. I hear no footsteps other than my own.
I recite the prayer that activates Illuminate, and some light softens the darkness. A dark silhouette leaps away, too quickly to make out any details.
I brace for its attack, but it never comes. The sensation of being stalked doesn't return.
I head toward the exit. A creature blocks the path. It lunges at me with its jaws ajar.
A puff of wind heavy with the creature's rotten breath envelops me as it bites down on where I had been a moment ago. I reach to clasp its mouth, but it retreats into the darkness.
In my world, there had been a famous animal tamer. He would interact with dangerous animals, and knew how to be safe with them. One thing I learned from his shows was that many animals have strong bites, but they aren't able to open their jaw while it's forcefully held shut.
The creature resurfaces, again lunging with a wide-open maw. It chomps down a hair's breadth from me. This time, I have my footing. I close my hands above and beneath its mouth, and hold it shut.
I activate Illuminate, bathing it in the light it hates so much. The creature thrashes violently, but I hold its mouth shut for dear life. I activate it again, and again, until the creature seems to fall unconscious. I carefully lay it face-down before releasing its mouth and quickly backing away.
I leave the cave. I will need to inform the guild.
