‎After Andre made his decision on his preferred bodyguard for Elena, Ian and I left the room. Andre hadn't even bothered with the usual dramatics this time, which told me just how shaken he really was. He rarely let his mask slip, but Elena's safety always did it.

‎Ian slowed his steps, glancing back as the door clicked shut behind us. "You think he's going to be alright?" he asked softly, his voice carrying more concern than sarcasm for once.

‎"He'll be fine," I replied firmly, though the certainty in my voice wasn't entirely real. Andre might joke about everything, but when it came to family—his sister, me, Ian—his resolve turned into steel. It wasn't something he admitted often, but it was clear to anyone who paid attention.
