Chapter 35: Enhancement

The Goddess of the East Sector turned out to be quite talkative, and she gave Kaito a considerable amount of information. For instance, in a past generation of the Infinite Space, there was no public area, no freedom to form teams; all Reincarnators were thrown into missions like insects in a jar, and the atmosphere was extremely oppressive. In this generation, however, not only were Reincarnators given significant freedom, but even the "Main God" had taken on this lovely appearance.
But no matter how her appearance changed, it didn't alter the fact that this being was likely the physical manifestation of the Nexus itself. In other words, this so-called "Miracle of the East Sector" held the lives of countless Reincarnators in her hands.
"Tsk. The newcomers these days are so impolite," the silver-haired, red-eyed Goddess grumbled, her voice suddenly unladylike. She descended from the air, the cheerful smile completely gone from her face as she made a rather vulgar gesture.

[Reincarnator Authority] was a progression system completely separate from a Reincarnator's power ranking. It determined what special privileges one could enjoy within the Infinite Space. These included things like receiving advance notice of the next mission world, creating teams and factions, increasing one's Dwell Time in the public space, and even using the Nexus's functions to designate a specific person for recruitment as a Reincarnator.
As a newcomer, Kaito currently had no authority whatsoever, but he could use [Singularities] to raise it.
To advance from a Newcomer to a [1-Star Reincarnator] required 1 C-rank Singularity. A 1-Star Reincarnator would receive an additional 2 hours of Dwell Time (which could be accumulated) each time they returned from a mission world.
To advance from 1-Star to 2-Star required 1 B-rank Singularity. In addition to another 2 hours of Dwell Time, a 2-Star Reincarnator would receive a 24-hour advance notice before their next deployment. Furthermore, 2-Star Reincarnators could create their own official teams, binding multiple Reincarnators together with a contract to complete missions.
Kaito didn't feel the need to look into the requirements for 3-Star or the higher-level [Titled Reincarnators] for now. The other extremely useful functions—[Ability], [Lineage], and [Sequence]—all required Singularities, the only currency the Goddess accepted.
The purchasing power of this currency was beyond anything Kaito had imagined. He now understood why Kai had accepted his offer for the Hamon scroll even after he had cut 2000 Dimensional Points from the price. Singularities had an irreplaceable function.
Kaito currently had 1 B-rank and 2 D-rank Singularities. He looked up at the giant Goddess, who floated effortlessly in the air as if gravity didn't apply to her.

Kaito tested the system and found that upgrading abilities was relatively cheap. Any ability below B-rank, at levels under Lv4, only required 1 E-rank Singularity per level. However, to break through to Lv4 or higher required a D-rank Singularity. It seemed reasonable enough. After all, a Reincarnator could train and level up these low-level skills themselves with enough time and resources. Kaito himself had raised his Hamon by one level after just five days of training. Five days of real-world time versus one E-rank Singularity… it's hard to say which is more precious.

It seemed that advancing his Sequence had hidden requirements. After a moment's thought, Kaito broke down one of his two remaining D-rank Singularities into three E-rank ones. He then spent one.

Kaito felt a significant increase in his body's cellular activity, but he still wasn't satisfied.

[B: Ripple Overdrive - Allows the user to release Hamon through their fists, enhancing striking power.]
When an ability reached Lv4, one could choose a specialization. In this case, option A meant further strengthening the internal buffs, keeping the Hamon contained within the body. Option B was to release the Hamon externally, unlocking the famous Overdrive technique and giving him a close-range energy attack.
Kaito's physical stats were already quite high. He felt his current hand-to-hand combat skills were sufficient for this stage, so after a brief consideration, he chose the more unique [Ripple Overdrive] enhancement.
Instantly, he felt the ripple energy within him surge in power. A dense wave of Hamon vibrated through his body and flowed across the surface of his skin. The wounds on his hands tingled as they began to heal, and he felt he could now channel the Hamon into his fists when he punched.

Kaito was currently wearing [Mercenary Tao's Pink Robe], which already boosted his Constitution by 2 points. Combined with the new effect from his Hamon, his Constitution had now reached 15, meeting the minimum requirement for [Devil Lance].
He tore open the scroll. It dissolved into a stream of information that flowed into his body. Kaito felt his muscles begin to twitch as a flood of muscle memory filled him. It was as if he had been practicing [Devil Lance] for a very long time, the ability becoming an instinct embedded in his very being.

Kaito was not the type of player to hoard resources. On the contrary, he was quite extravagant and believed in using what he had. He instantly spent his two remaining E-rank Singularities to raise Devil Lance to Lv3.

After leaving the Goddess's Sanctum, Kaito went to the [Rank Management Office]. Here, another female Nexus-character, this one clad in knight's armor, greeted him.
"Well now, you've reached the threshold of the [Mortal]-tier already?" she said, sounding impressed.
"Advancing to the [Mortal]-tier is simple. Kill a plot character with a rating of [Mortal]-tier or higher in single combat. Bring me his head. His head will become your strength."
