Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Echoes of Adam

The silence didn't last long.

Eliza stumbled back from the darkened lab, her heart pounding. The hum beyond the glass grew louder—mechanical, precise, like something ancient coming back online. She instinctively reached for her sidearm again, hands trembling but steady enough to aim. Every shadow felt like it might lurch forward. She took a shaky breath, trying to ground herself.

"Okay, stay sharp, Eliza," she whispered. Her eyes darted toward the now-dormant screen. The image of Adam walking into that facility replayed in her mind—his confident stride, the brief glance over his shoulder. There was no doubt. He'd been lured here. She cursed herself for not digging deeper sooner.

With no light and only instinct to guide her, she pressed her ear to the wall. The hum became a rhythmic pulse—like a heartbeat woven into the structure itself. Then came a soft mechanical click—like a panel sliding open somewhere nearby.

She scanned the room with sharper focus. Near the floor, tucked behind a broken console half-swallowed by debris, she spotted a faint outline—an emergency maintenance panel. With effort, she pried it open using a multitool from her belt. Inside, an old and narrow emergency shaft, barely large enough to crawl through. Dust and cold air rushed out.

No turning back.

She took one last glance at the lab, exhaled, then climbed in.

The crawlspace was tight, squeezing from all sides. Her breath echoed in the confined space, her movements slow and deliberate to avoid making noise. Sweat stung her eyes, her ribs ached from earlier falls, but she pushed forward, propelled by pure adrenaline and the image of Adam imprisoned.

Halfway through, she stopped. Something creaked ahead. For a moment, she thought she heard a whisper—her name? She paused, heart hammering. Silence. Shaking off the nerves, she crawled on.

After what felt like forever—her muscles burning and lungs aching—she reached a vent. She kicked it open with a sharp grunt and pulled herself through, falling onto cold, gleaming floors.

The new chamber was sterile—circular, cold, unnervingly symmetrical. The air was still, and the faint hum returned, deeper this time.

At the center, a glowing console flickered to life as if sensing her presence. Cautiously, she crept closer, her hand hovering over her pistol.

SUBJECT CONTAINMENT: ACTIVE. ID: BETA-001. STATUS: IN ISOLATION.

Her breath hitched. "Beta-001…" she murmured. "That's him. That's Adam."

She stared at the screen, a hundred questions swirling. But the biggest one—why was he still alive and being hidden?—clawed at her gut.

She looked around the chamber again. Who built this place? Who was running it? And most of all, why had they kept him here all this time?

—

Elsewhere.

Adam Brashear stirred.

His mind floated in and out of awareness like drifting through fog. Slowly, his senses sharpened. Cold. Stillness. Light.

When he finally opened his eyes, he was met with a sterile white glow that seemed to pulse with a rhythm of its own.

The room was curved, seamless. No doors. No windows. Just smooth, softly pulsing walls that hummed with restrained energy.

He sat up, disoriented. Everything felt slightly off—like gravity didn't know what it wanted. His body felt intact, but there was an artificial stillness in the air.

"Where... where am I?"

His voice sounded strange to his own ears—like it echoed through water.

A chime echoed from nowhere. Then a synthetic voice replied:

"Vitals stable. Neural lock partially disengaged. Subject Beta-001 conscious."

Adam stood, slightly swaying. He scanned the room, his memory hazy. He remembered Eliza… her voice calling out… the flare of energy... and then—blackness.

He touched the wall. It pushed back, not like metal, but like thick air—some kind of force field. Not just a cage. A containment unit.

Suddenly, a transparent panel slid open in front of him.

A man stepped forward. He looked mid-40s, sharp features, calm demeanor. Wore a black tactical suit, the insignia on his chest faded but familiar—S.W.O.R.D.

Adam narrowed his eyes. "Where am I? What is this place?"

The man tapped a tablet in his hand without looking up. "Cognition stabilizing faster than expected," he muttered. Then louder, "You weren't supposed to be conscious yet. But I suppose nothing about you ever goes according to plan."

Adam clenched his fists and summoned energy. Blue light sparked around his hands—but fizzled immediately, absorbed by the walls.

He gritted his teeth. "What did you do to me?"

"Nothing harmful," the man said evenly. "We needed you sedated. Long enough to ensure containment. That's all."

Adam's voice was low, but the weight behind it was unmistakable. "Why?"

The man looked at him now, calm and almost regretful. "Project Perseus. You're not just part of it—you're the foundation. Your potential... it's beyond even your understanding."

Adam stepped closer to the transparent barrier. "You're playing with forces you clearly don't understand."

The man smiled faintly. "That's always been your opinion. Ours is different. We're cleaning up a mess left decades ago. You just happen to be in the middle of it."

Adam's expression hardened. "This isn't how you fix things."

The panel began to darken, cutting the connection.

Adam raised his voice. "Don't walk away from me!"

But the man was already turning, tapping the side of his tablet.

The room around Adam responded instantly. The air shimmered, and the walls began to bend—not collapse, but fold space inward like origami made of light.

Adam braced himself. "I'll figure this out," he muttered. "And when I do... I'm not staying quiet."

The lights blinked—once, twice—then surged into white.
