Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The One Who Tracked Him

Adam didn't move. His eyes locked onto the man at the hatch. He wore civilian clothes and held a grav-knife that hummed with faint energy. His calm demeanor didn't match the chaos they had just escaped. Everything about him was deliberate, almost rehearsed—like he'd been expecting this moment. The metallic clang of dripping water echoed through the tunnel behind them.

Eliza stood behind Adam, half-hidden, her breathing shallow, her fingers slowly inching toward her jacket where her taser was clipped. Her eyes flicked from the stranger to Adam, sensing something unspoken pass between the two. The tension in the air wrapped around them like the thick fog before a lightning storm.

"Who are you?" Adam repeated, voice even but tense, though his body was already halfway between stillness and spring-loaded reaction. A faint shimmer coursed across his fingertips—a subtle sign of power barely restrained.

The man offered a tight, polite smile, his hands raised slightly to show he wasn't armed—at least, not visibly. "Just a messenger. Someone with access. Someone who knows what you are."

"That's not an answer," Adam replied flatly, his tone edged and firm.

The man chuckled, casual, like they were meeting for coffee on a lazy Sunday. "I lit the path they followed. Figured you'd want to know who's knocking before the whole house burns down."

Adam's fingers twitched, and the hum of antimatter coiled faintly at his palms. It was a low warning growl, a presence felt more than heard.

"Adam," Eliza warned quietly, reading the tension like a flare in the dark. Her other hand gripped the taser firmly now, her knuckles white.

But Adam had already seen it—just behind the man's calm front, subtle cues. A tiny earpiece tucked just behind the ear. Shifting eyes not from nervousness, but calculation. The kind of posture that knew when to duck, when to strike. The scent of ozone tingled faintly in the air.

He lunged.

The man pivoted fast, activating the grav-knife with a flick of the wrist. The blade came alive, humming a violet arc as it sliced through the air where Adam had just been. But Adam was faster. He rolled under, swept his leg out, and kicked the man's wrist with surgical force. The blade scattered down the concrete steps, clattering into the shadows.

Eliza didn't hesitate. She darted forward and fired her taser—twin prongs lanced out, sparks erupting on contact. The man jerked and dropped to his knees, muscles locking.

But instead of collapsing, he laughed through clenched teeth, electricity arcing across his jaw. His body convulsed, but something in his armor modulated the current.

"Too late... they're already here."

A sharp whistle overhead—then the crack of gunfire split the air.

"Sniper!" Adam shouted, pulling Eliza back through the hatch as bullets chipped the stairwell, sending up clouds of dust and stone. One round sparked off the iron railing just inches from Eliza's shoulder.

They slid back into the tunnels, boots pounding against metal grates. The wall behind them sparked—one shot narrowly missed Adam's head, punching a clean hole in the rusted pipe beside him. The smell of scorched metal filled the air as they ducked into the shadows.

They didn't stop running until they reached a rusted ladder embedded in the side wall of a tunnel junction. Eliza climbed first, panting, boots scraping as she pulled herself up. Adam followed, using one arm while the other clutched his side.

"Where's this go?" Adam asked, his voice ragged.

"Old filtration plant," she gasped. "Had a stash there. Food, gear… medkits."

They emerged into the remains of what was once a water processing chamber. The air was thick with mildew. Steel drums lay overturned, rusting pipes wept slow drips, and the floor was slick with grime. Broken ceiling panels let faint light spill in through cracks. A broken floodlight flickered against one wall, casting long shadows.

Eliza hurried to a concealed locker behind a metal grate. She unlocked it with trembling fingers and pulled out a compact med case, a bag of sealed supplies, and a battered old tablet.

Adam collapsed against the wall, head tilted back, his chest rising and falling heavily. His skin shimmered faintly, like his body was trying to recalibrate itself.

Eliza knelt beside him, ripping open the med case. "You're pale. Too pale. You don't look okay."

"I've been worse," he muttered, though his arm trembled and sweat beaded along his temple. His powers had never felt this unstable before. It wasn't just fatigue—it felt like something inside him was flickering, misfiring.

She scanned him with a portable reader. The screen blinked erratically. "Whatever they hit you with… it's disrupting your molecular stability. Not lethal, but it's poking holes in your coherence. Like you're glitching."

Adam groaned. "That grav-knife… SHIELD scrapped that design years ago. Prototype tech. Wasn't supposed to leave the vault."

Eliza froze, her eyes narrowing as she pieced it together. "So either SHIELD lost control of their toys…"

"Or someone inside handed them out."

They exchanged a look. Not just worry. Recognition. This wasn't a random hit squad—they were using secrets that only the highest levels of the intelligence community ever touched.

Adam's hand brushed against one of the merc helmets they'd dragged with them. He turned it over—and paused. Beneath the inner padding, something blinked red.

A tracer.

He looked sharply at Eliza. "We've got five minutes. Maybe less."

Before she could respond, her tablet pinged—shrill, insistent.

"Pingback. Incoming. Not just one. Multiple. Looks like a sweep team."

Adam forced himself up, swaying slightly. "We make a stand or move?"

Eliza looked toward the cracked corridor branching off the chamber. "We run. I've got a route, but it's tight. Underground access tunnels—they won't be able to follow fast."

Above them, unseen, perched on a shadowed rooftop across the stagnant canal, a red lens glowed faintly in the haze. The air outside was still, almost eerily calm.

Through the scope, a masked operative tracked movement through the broken skylight. His voice was steady and low as he whispered into a comms unit. "Visual confirmed. Blue Marvel is compromised. Orders?"

A woman's voice replied—calm, clinical, and unflinching. "Engage. Terminate if necessary."
