Ashvale Asylum.
Levi stood in front of the old, massive mental asylum as he clutched onto a duffle bag in his right hand rattling with every step he took, the only thought in his mind, "How'd I get here?"
****
Five years ago, on a bright sunny morning as someone laid in the tiny bed with his body curled up into a ball, just before the alarm rang.
BRRRRRGGG.
Levi stretched out his hand as he slammed onto the top of the alarm to silence it as it finally shut up and he groaned for several minutes before finally getting up.
"LEVI, GET UP AND READY FOR SCHOOL!"
A voice echoed throughout the house, it was his mother's, he reluctantly stood up as he headed for the bathroom while still trying to scratch the tiredness out of his eye.
His physique, small as he stood at 5 foot 5, arms tiny and frail, hair jet-black, eyes brown and the ever-present black circles under his eyes.
He brushed his teeth and took a bath as he finally got ready.
He proceeded to head down the stairs as his brother, Jamie, and his twin sister, Ivery, were already at the dining table stuffing their faces and their dad just stood behind the counter sipping coffee and taking casual glances at the TV.
It was a news report, the report dressed in a crisp grey suit and your all American smile sat in front of the screen trying to be as natural as possible.
He said, "Tho, we don't know how dangerous these "evolved humans", but we do know one thing, they might just be the key to saving us from mass extinction."
"No,..." The second reporter next to his gracefully added as she smiled, to them it was more of a playful banter, her suit fit and hugging her figure, her makeup light, her blonde hair cascading down her shoulder — just picture your everyday weather woman.
"There's a reason evolution happens over millions and millions of years and is not cooked up in a lab with scientists, this goes against nature and everything progression."
The man chimed in again, his voice lower, "Oh, come on Margret, what would you have us do... Roll over and die, we're nearing the edge of extinction and we're using our knowledge to stop it, to continue life... Isn't that the purpose of nature?"
"No it isn't," almost like she couldn't help herself as she stopped him, "look of course as humans we want to continue our life... But there's a reason why dinosaurs didn't escape their extinction and neither did the Neanderthals, because when Earth says it's time to go, you go.... Otherwise, you might not like the consequences."
The television went off abruptly.
Their dad's head turned as he was so invested in the cast he wanted to see the end, his eyes trailed to the direction of the remote to find his wife standing, one hand on her waist and the other holding the remote.
He wide eyes immediately shrunk, "Sweetheart, I was watching that, I mean they have good points."
Her gaze narrowed, "the lady's a crazy fanatic, the man's just reading from the teleprompter, it's all just fake."
"What?, They're literally talking about the next step in evolution so humans don't die off."
"And what if humans are meant to die off? Face it baby, nothing's supposed to be on this Earth forever, not even us."
"But—"
She cut him off before he could utter another word, "maybe this isn't something we should be discussing with them around," she tilted her head in the direction of the kids.
The twins remained buried in their food as Levi hissed, "I really don't care, mom."
She walked towards him and after smoothing his hair kissed him on the forehead.
Clink.
Their dad placed the mug onto the table as he rubbed his hands together, "Alright kids, let's get to school."
"It'll never not be weird my dad's my teacher," Levi said as he flung his back lazily onto his shoulders and headed for the door.
It was a day like any other in the Kane residence, except that night.
The kids and their dad came back at night like always, the usual wash up before dinner as they say round the dinning table, the rules were simple at the dinner, no phones and be present.
Dad carried the steaming hot meatloaf from the kitchen oven onto the dinning table as they all took a deep breath, practically draining the dish of its smell.
They all held hands as they shared the grace, they finished as Jamie and Ivery were locked in their usual games before it happened—
*Ding-dong*
The doorbell rang, they all glanced at each other, their mother touching her husband's arm, "are you expecting anyone?"
He shrugged it off, "No, not that I can think of."
He slowly stood from his chair as he approached the door, as an eerie feeling crawled up his chest, this isn't right.
Levi, unbothered as he kept on eating, "mom and dad forget inviting people all the time," he thought as he didn't say anything.
Their dad held the handle of the door, slowly dragging it back as he was ready for anything.
It was a girl, in her late teens, hair disheveled, make-up drooping, dress a mess and heaving heavily.
He was immediately taken aback as he stared at her with a worried look, his brows furrowed together, "what happened?"
She tried to catch her breath, "they're coming for me, I don't know what they are but they're coming for me, I won't survive, please, help me."
All eyes inside instinctively turned in her direction as their mother stood up gesturing for her to come in, but she didn't.
Instead she asked, "can I come in?"
Though she seemed genuinely distort her words carried a chill with them, rattling them all.
She slowly smiled.
Her feet crossed the threshold of the door with a gust of wind following in suite, then so did they, six others all sickly pale.
Their dad tried to stop them before they pushed him back, the last one entering the room, he exhuded a completely different level of energy from the rest.
It closed the door behind it, cracking his neck and he said, "Let's feast."
Levi's eyes went wide, that was the first time he'd ever seen it, the blackening veins around the eyes, the protruding claws and fangs tearing out of skin like paper, their sunken cheeks but worst of all, the bloodshot eyes and the total inability to move.
The fear was paralyzing, or was it something even worse than fear?
It happened in a blur as they lunged for each of them, completely draining them all of their blood and taking turns as if it were a party.
The leader grabbed their father's head and before he could move an instant his head was on backwards as his eyes wide open facing his family and his body went completely limp.
As the echo of the terrifying snap of their father's neck shatter in an instant their mother jolted awake as she stepped in front of the table, hands spread out and sweat riddling her face.
It didn't take long before her blood was shared between the walls and their throats.
No one came for them, not the police, not the neighbours (if they were even still alive), not even the god they just said grace to.
As one lunged for Levi, he bit into its neck as red spewed all over the floor, it grabbed its next and immediately threw Levi against the wall
But someone was completely dried of blood,Levi, the last surviving member of the Kane family as he laid on the floor, unable to move, drained of almost all his life and at arms length of this little sister as he watched them take turns on her, both sucking and raping her.
They're wasn't even enough blood for his to shed a tear just before everything went dark.
