Chapter 33 - ESC

Kalen finally got distracted when Vaida returned from her shopping trip, and called on him to show him things she had bought. They both left Alrik alone in Kalen's office, and he made sure they were gone before using the small device that would keep the CCTV looped to hide his tracks. Next was using the remote hacker on Kalen's laptop, before checking for anything physical.

He found a small disk with an engraved sign that he vaguely recognised. He wasn't sure where he had seen it before, and if he took it, Kalen would probably notice it was missing. So he just took a picture of that. In five minutes, he was done and seated like nothing happened. Since his grandfather only kept important items at work, Alrik would have to come up with another plan to infiltrate their office. For now, the next step was to find a way to leave the estate without causing too much suspicion.

Kalen returned several minutes later, and Alrik pretended to be asleep.

"Look at you, so calm. You even have the audacity to sleep like you have no care in the world when I could kill you right now." Kalen spoke, but Alrik was not anxious or afraid.

He knew Kalen wouldn't kill him after their grandfather ordered him not to. At least for now, he was safe.

"I had to do so many things just to get you out of my way. You should not have stressed me to that point. Getting rid of that damn sword was not easy, and the idiots still failed to kill you..."

It was only his training that made him remain still, and not snap his eyes open as Kalen mentioned the heirloom sword. He was right. Even though there was no evidence, Kalen was really the one who stole and sold the Zerdon sword. But where could it be now? Retrieving it could expose Kalen's involvement.

"...You should have just stayed away from things that don't belong to you. Who cares if you're the child of the older son? Your father is gone, so mine should take priority. Then I should inherit from him as his son. You should have just died with your family."

Alrik was disappointed when Kalen kept ranting but didn't mention the sword again. He needed more information. But hopefully, all the files copied from Kalen's device would give some sort of clue when his team is done sorting through them all.

"The doctor has arrived for the examination." A maid announced as she knocked on the door.

Alrik was taken to the living room, and after several minutes, he was done.

"The blood tests are just to assess his physical condition. As for the mental, it's best if he's admitted into a care centre for now before his condition becomes violent, or he starts to harm himself. He may seem calm now, but I predict he's close to a mental breakdown any day now." The doctor announced after questioning, poking and prodding Alrik.

It was while the doctor was leaving that he slipped a tiny paper into Alrik's hands. Alrik read the note while he walked down the hallway towards his room. It was very short.

"Esc."

It looked vague but he understood perfectly. That was why the doctor had exaggerated his condition. He was probably hired by Alrik's team after intercepting the request for a doctor from the estate. They used this ruse to make sure Alrik was doing well, and also offer him a chance to escape. The doctor had done a good job to convince everyone that sending Alrik away would be best. That was an easy escape route.

He paused when he heard voices, and pretended to be distracted by the painting on the wall, while he listened to the conversation.

"So what is your decision, Grandfather? You heard the doctor, he would be better off in a mental institution. They would take better care for him there." Kalen said.

"I haven't decided yet."

"Seriously? Don't tell me you're thinking of letting him live with the rest of us, and hiring caregivers? That's not fair to the rest of us. You heard the doctor's diagnosis, right? He needs a more stable environment, and being here could trigger worse symptoms." Kalen was trying hard to keep his voice low when he spoke, but it was so hard for him not to show his anger.

He was pissed off that even while being a retard, his grandfather seemed to have a soft spot for Alrik. Why always Alrik? He began to have different thoughts on how to kiss Alrik again, permanently this time.

Meanwhile, Alrik was making his own plans. He knew that if he didn't do something, his grandfather would actually make him stay at the estate. That would make it much harder to escape. He already had information, even if not everything he needed, but at least enough to have good clues. He needed to return to his wife. There was only one thing to do. He needed to convince his grandfather that the Doctor's diagnosis was urgent.

He turned away from his room, and took another route to the kitchen. He grabbed the closest knife and began to smash things. The kitchen staff screamed as he threatened them with the knife in his hands, screaming that someone stole his bear.

"Where is my bear? You took him. Confess! I saw my blood leave in a bag. The blood on the bear. The bear." He screamed and kept babbling nonsense, then he tried to bang his head on the wall before the guards were able to restrain him.

"My bear! Give it! Blood in the bag. I want…"

"Alrik! Get a hold of yourself. Enough!" His grandfather snapped, and Alrik stopped.

When they saw he was calmer, the guards loosened their hold on him. Then he smiled, and reached for the gun on the closest guard.

"Hold him! He's going for the gun."

They managed to pin Alrik down, and restrained him.

"Make preparations for the top psychiatric institution in the country. Tell them to make room for one as soon as possible." Griffin said, and internally, Alrik was relieved.

By the next day, a van with two nurses, and three guards arrived at the estate to transport Alrik to the mental institution. Kalen smirked as the van drove away because he believed he would never see Alrik again, and Alrik would rot away.

"Are you okay, boss? Sorry for the restraints. We had to make it look legit so they would think we were really from the mental institution." One of the disguised nurses said as they released Alrik.

"Phase one of the mission is complete. Move to phase two."
