Long ago, in the mountain kingdom of Bairath (present-day Chaukhutia), King Dola Shah lived with riches but no heir. His heart ached for a child. Wise men told him, "O King, worship Lord Shiva at Bagnath, and your wish will be fulfilled."
At Bagnath, Dola Shah met Sunapati Shauk-Ganguly, a wealthy trader who, like him, was childless. By the temple steps, the two men swore a vow: "If one is blessed with a son and the other with a daughter, the children shall be wed, uniting our families forever."
Soon after, destiny fulfilled their prayer—Dola Shah was blessed with a son, Malushahi, and Sunapati with a daughter, Rajula.
