Rory didn't spare a second glance at Yelena's severed corpse. Without hesitation, he charged forward, greatsword swinging toward Thor.
CLANG!
Korg stepped in to block with his stone club, only for Rory to slice it in half with one strike.
Rory followed up with a vicious elbow strike, shattering Korg into a pile of stones. He raised his sword again to finish Korg off, but Stormbreaker clashed against his blade, stopping it.
Now facing Rory head-on were Thor, Captain Marvel (Carol), and Doctor Strange.
Strange, catching sight of the rest of the team struggling against the seventeen super soldiers, shouted:
"Rory, call them off! You've lost!"
SWISH, A golden shield and longsword appeared in Rory's hands as he took a battle stance.
"Life isn't about winning or losing.
No one gets to control my destiny. No one!!"
He pointed his sword and bellowed:
"Kill them all! Leave no one alive!"
He had once had a fling with Jessica Jones, but now, standing on opposite sides, mercy was a luxury he couldn't afford.
"RAAAH!" The seventeen super soldiers exploded into action, two rushed Black Panther, two swarmed Spider-Man, one targeted the Winter Soldier, and the rest brutally charged the Defenders.
Matt Murdock (Daredevil) tried to block with his batons, but a dagger slashed his ribs, followed by stabs to the abdomen and arm.
Within moments, he was overwhelmed and collapsed in a pool of blood.
"Matt!!" cried Jessica.
Iron Fist (Danny Rand) managed to knock away a soldier, but was then pinned by three others. They broke his arm, his energy fist twisted backward with a sickening CRACK.
Just as one of the soldiers raised a knife to stab his heart, Luke Cage charged in, his unbreakable body knocking enemies aside to save Danny.
But more soldiers swarmed, grabbed Luke by his limbs, and dragged him to a tank, pinning him beneath its treads.
Luke screamed and struggled, but the heavy machinery crushed him into the dirt.
Next up, Black Panther and Winter Soldier.
At this rate, all the heroes would die here.
Doctor Strange quickly opened portals, pulling the Defenders, Black Panther, and Winter Soldier off the battlefield.
Now targetless, the seventeen super soldiers turned toward Peter Parker.
"Oh my god!" he gasped.
THWIP!, He swung away in panic, but Strange had already opened a portal midair, sending Spider-Man through and out of harm's way.
Rory pointed at Hulk.
"Kill him too."
The super soldiers swarmed Bruce Banner.
Already evenly matched against Red Hulk, now with the added onslaught of seventeen enhanced soldiers, Banner was done for.
Captain Marvel tried to intervene,
"Not happening!" Rory shouted, sprinting toward her, shield raised to deflect her energy blasts, then lunging at Hulk with his longsword.
He couldn't stop fliers, but he could kill ground targets.
Just before the sword landed, SWOOSH!, another portal opened, and Strange pulled Hulk away just in time.
"RAAAARGH!!" Red Hulk roared triumphantly.
No one else seemed to know who he was, but Rory did.
Green Hulk had always been Ross's obsession, and now, he had finally won.
Rory turned to face the three heroes before him.
Thor + Doctor Strange + Captain Marvel
VS
Rory + Red Hulk + 17 Super Soldiers
"Shoot the magician out of the sky!"
At Rory's order, the super soldiers drew their sidearms and opened fire on Doctor Strange.
Thor and Carol could tank missiles. Strange, however, could not.
He quickly summoned a magical barrier as protection.
Some soldiers grabbed Gatling guns, preparing to drown him in bullets.
Two helicopters swept in and unleashed heavy firepower toward the skies, forcing Carol to cover Strange with her body.
Ground-based artillery locked in and began shelling the area.
Thor, enraged, hurled Stormbreaker at the choppers and charged the ground forces.
Rory stepped in again, shield raised, sword swinging.
CLANG!
Stormbreaker met Rory's cosmic shield. Rory countered with a blade slash.
"So this is what it's like to be Steve Rogers," Rory thought. "Shields are awesome."
Just then, Nick Fury's voice came through their comms:
"Everyone retreat immediately. Stop fighting. Now!"
"But, "
"No buts! We don't harm civilians or military personnel. That's an order!"
With reinforcements behind him, Rory now had the upper hand. The rest of the Avengers had pulled back, the trio couldn't win.
Carol looked to Strange. "No more chances. Time to go."
Strange reluctantly nodded.
SWOOSH! A portal swallowed him up.
Carol ascended in a golden streak of light. Thor soared after her, Stormbreaker in hand.
Just like that, the battle ended.
The military base was rubble, most of it destroyed by the two Hulks.
Red Hulk stomped toward Rory, looming.
Rory dismissed his weapons. "Can't change back?"
Red Hulk exhaled steam and nodded.
Though the base was wrecked, the underground lab remained intact. Rory led Ross (still in Hulk form) back down.
A quick blood sample showed Ross's blood was golden, and, like the Green Hulk, full of gamma radiation.
That shouldn't be possible.
Normally, Red Hulk would be a product of Samuel Sterns (The Leader) and gamma mutation. Had Sterns already altered Ross?
The timelines didn't match. Rory was baffled.
After reviewing all the data, Rory approached the crouching Ross (the lab ceiling too low for him to stand).
"Have you ever met someone named Samuel Sterns?"
Ross shook his head. "No."
"Alright." Rory nodded. "I don't know how this happened, but I've got a suppressant that might return you to normal. It's risky. You decide."
The suppressant was derived from a lab mouse that had been injected with Thanos's blood.
While it didn't become stronger, it developed the ability to suppress other genes, perfect for a case like this.
Ross thought for a moment… then nodded.
"Do it."
