Chapter 60 - Chapter 60: Rory vs. the Avengers – Round Two

BZZZZZZZZT!DA-DA-DA-DA-DA!

Seventeen Gatling guns fired in unison, weaving a web of bullets that surged toward the Avengers with terrifying intensity.

The arrival of seventeen super soldiers immediately put the Avengers under heavy pressure.

"Peter Parker!"

Hearing the call, Peter instantly fired a web to latch onto War Machine in the sky, swinging around to land behind the super soldiers.

Thwip!

He shot a line of web at one of their wrists, but it was torn off in the very next second, and a punch landed squarely on Peter's face.

"Ow, my nose!"

Members of the Defenders rushed in to help, but the seventeen super soldiers, having emptied their Gatlings, threw them aside and charged in. Within seconds, the four Defenders were all pinned to the ground and brutalized.

"Damn it! These guys aren't normal! We need backup over here!!"

Black Panther and the Winter Soldier arrived shortly after and joined the brawl, but even they couldn't suppress the super soldiers completely.

These weren't just enhanced humans, they were trained military operatives. Even if they weren't individually stronger than the Avengers, sheer numbers and training made them a real threat. Even seasoned heroes struggled under the barrage of fists.

Meanwhile

Rory was chasing Captain Marvel and the Hulk, swinging his massive golden greatsword wildly.

The Hulk hurled a jeep at him, Rory sliced it in two with one swing. The severed jeep halves slid several meters across the pavement before igniting spilled gasoline in a fiery BOOM behind him.

The blaze cast dancing shadows of Rory's figure across the ground.

Captain Marvel flew in and launched an energy blast. Rory instantly conjured a shield to block it, then reshaped the energy into a single-handed sword, allowing him to parry while charging at Hulk.

Sure, the Hulk was tough, but against cosmic-energy-forged weapons, durability meant little. These weren't just sharp, they were energy-based, cutting through metal like tofu. The only real counter was equal energy.

Captain Marvel zipped around in the air, harassing Rory from above while the Hulk prepared a tackle.

"RAAARGH!" Hulk roared, charging Rory from behind.

Just as the Hulk was about to make contact, the wall of the lab exploded, and out of the flying debris charged another Hulk.

The newcomer tackled the green Hulk, and the two giants rolled across the ground, trading vicious blows.

Everyone, including Rory, froze for a moment.

"…Red Hulk?!"

Indeed, this Red Hulk was General Ross himself.

Back in the lab, Ross had climbed up the elevator shaft carrying a vial of enhancement serum. During the chaos, the vial shattered, cutting Ross's hand and spilling its contents, mixed with Hulk's green blood, directly into the wound.

Thus, Red Hulk was born.

The two Hulks pummeled each other with raw, brutal force. Meanwhile, the rest of the Avengers were bogged down by the super soldiers.

Seeing this, Rory grinned and charged at Captain Marvel again, slamming his sword straight into her forehead.

WHAM!

History repeated itself, Carol was knocked flat once more.

The concrete cracked beneath her as Rory continued to rain down blows, the shockwaves fracturing the ground in every direction.

"Come on! Get up! I'm waiting!" Rory mocked as he struck again and again.

Carol was dazed, her radiant energy barely keeping her from blacking out.

FWOOSH!

Suddenly, a blinding rainbow beam shot down from the sky. A storm axe shot out of it, slamming Rory dozens of meters backward.

"Oops, sorry, had a little delay. Everyone okay?" joked Thor, stepping out from the Bifrost alongside Korg.

He thought he was funny, but no one responded. Everyone was busy.

Red Hulk had just swatted Hulk with a whole airplane. Hulk retaliated by throwing a tank, but it missed and crushed several unfortunate soldiers.

Thor blinked. "Whoa, is that his cousin?"

Carol stood up, rubbing her forehead. "That's Rory."

Thor turned to look at Rory, who was already staring back at him.

WZHHH, Stormbreaker returned to Thor's hand.

"You coming quietly," Thor said with a smirk, "or do I need to knock you out first?"

Thor wasn't just any Avenger, his Stormbreaker could split Infinity Stone-level attacks in half. It had even beheaded Thanos.

Right now, Stormbreaker was the only weapon on the field that posed a real threat to Rory.

But Rory had never been one to back down. He scoffed, "Maybe I'll be the one to put you down."

Thor's smile vanished. He leapt high, then brought his axe down with full force.

BOOM!

The axe missed and cratered the ground. Thor then turned and swept the blade toward Rory.

CLANG!

Rory blocked it with his greatsword. The two began trading blow after blow, neither giving an inch.

Thor grew more and more surprised. Who is this kid? he thought. He's keeping up… with me?!

Time Pressure Mounts

The longer the battle dragged on, the worse it got for the Avengers.

More military reinforcements arrived, tanks, artillery, and soldiers circled the battlefield. Every cannon pointed at them.

Above, bomb-laden fighter jets roared past, primed to strike.

WZHHH,

Suddenly, a portal opened. Doctor Strange floated out, finally recovered.

He instantly unleashed the Images of Ikonn, a horde of illusory clones that surrounded Rory.

Dozens of crimson spell-whips lashed out, binding Rory in place.

This was the same move Strange had once used on Thanos.

"Now, Thor! Do it!!" Strange shouted.

Thor raised Stormbreaker and charged.

The blade glinted ominously, humming through the air on a collision course with Rory's neck.

But Rory's eyes burned with focus. He summoned every ounce of cosmic energy he had.

His sword vanished, replaced by glimmering golden armor that encased his entire body.

The cosmic threads shimmered in the night, casting a glow across the battlefield.

Stormbreaker slammed into the armor,

CLAAANG!

Sparks erupted. Lightning and golden energy collided in a blinding burst.

Thor was blasted away.

The pull of the spell-whips pulled Strange off-balance, and Rory, temporarily freed, conjured two daggers and sliced through the magical bindings.

"Heh…"

Rory smirked, then decided to say nothing more. He'd almost quipped "You should've aimed for the head," but thought better of it.

With another swipe, his greatsword reappeared, and with one mighty blow, he sent a stunned Thor flying.

Thor crashed directly into Strange's real body, causing all the illusionary clones to vanish.

Meanwhile, the army had formed a full perimeter. Guns and artillery fired non-stop.

Suddenly, a shadow flew across Rory's vision.

On edge, he reflexively slashed, cutting the shape clean in half.

SHHHLK!

Blood sprayed. It was Yelena Belova, the second Black Widow, thrown by a super soldier, and she had landed right on Rory's blade.

She convulsed a few times, then fell limp.

Rory froze. He'd thought it was just another weapon thrown his way, he hadn't expected it to be a person.
