On the table, as Henry serves himself dinner, his phone vibrates. Riley doesn't need to lean over to see who it is, the name flashes clear on the screen: Adam.
That single name is enough to shatter the fragile composure Riley has been trying to hold together since he entered the house this evening.
His stomach twists, and before Henry can even glance his way, Riley is already on his feet. He gathers up the dishes he and Skye used and heads toward the kitchen, his movements sharper than usual.
Skye follows him, but Riley turns to him with a soft voice that hides the storm inside.
"You can go to my room. I'll be right behind you," he says, coaxing, gentle.
"Okay," Skye nods, his light mood returning as he runs upstairs.
Riley lets out a shaky breath as soon as he disappears. He hadn't wanted Skye to see his face just now, not when every muscle inside him feels like it's about to unravel.
