Chapter 19 — Stepping Back into the Light

The third morning after the coma, the knock on their door came earlier than usual. Tsunade stepped in, arms crossed, her sharp gaze sweeping over both of them.

"You've recovered faster than I expected," she said, her tone almost begrudging. "Physically, at least."

Naruto perked up. "So we can go now?"

She didn't answer right away. Instead, she studied them in silence — the faint shadow in their expressions, the way they sat just a little too still. "Your mental state is another matter. But… I can't keep you here forever."

With a flick of her wrist, she set their discharge papers on the small table. "You're cleared to return to active life. But no solo missions, no high-risk work, and report to me for weekly evaluations."

Sasuke gave a curt nod, signing the papers without a word. Naruto followed, though his grip on the pen was tighter than necessary.

The First Steps Outside

When they stepped into the sunlight, the village was just as they remembered — children running between market stalls, vendors shouting over one another, shinobi moving with practiced urgency.

But for them, it felt… different. The streets were the same, yet their eyes saw more than before. Tiny fluctuations in chakra in the crowd, patterns in movement, hidden tensions beneath smiling faces.

Naruto shoved his hands into his pockets. "Feels like we've been gone longer than a week."

"Maybe we have," Sasuke replied quietly, eyes scanning the rooftops as if expecting something — or someone — to appear.

A Glimpse from the Shadows

They didn't notice the faint rustle in the trees near the memorial stone.

A single figure stood there, half-hidden in the leaves, watching their every step. His gaze lingered on them as they disappeared into the streets, unreadable beneath the shadow of his mask.

Back to the Flow

Their return didn't go unnoticed. Konohamaru came running, tripping over his own enthusiasm. "Naruto! You're finally out! You missed so much training—hey, what happened to your eyes?"

Naruto blinked. "What do you mean?"

"They're… different," Konohamaru said, squinting as if trying to pin down the change. But before Naruto could answer, Sasuke spoke.

"Hallucination. You're seeing things."

Konohamaru frowned, clearly unconvinced, but dropped the subject when Naruto ruffled his hair with forced cheer.

Hidden Resolve

That night, they met on the roof of Naruto's apartment, the moonlight catching the edges of their expressions.

"We need to start piecing it together," Naruto said, his voice low.

"The gaps in our memories — they're not natural."

Sasuke's gaze stayed on the horizon. "We move carefully. We ask the wrong question to the wrong person, and we'll tip off whoever caused this."

Naruto exhaled slowly, the weight of the past and present pressing on his chest. "Then we find them before they find us."

The wind shifted, carrying the faint scent of rain. Somewhere, deep in their shared instincts, both knew — the real battle hadn't even begun.
