It was time to intervene.

Jonathan and Kaela stood before the *Narrative Forge*, a hidden interface accessible only to those who had earned ethical trust. It wasn't a quest board. It was a mission constructor—where designers could embed dilemmas, choices, and emotional weight into gameplay.

> "We need a mission that doesn't reward strength," Kaela said. 

> "But one that reveals it."

Jonathan nodded.

> "Let's test empathy. Not as a mechanic, but as a currency."

They began crafting.

- **Objective**: Locate three NPCs who have lost their narrative threads due to past player actions. 

- **Challenge**: Players must reconstruct each NPC's memory through emotional resonance, not combat. 

- **Reward**: No items. No stats. Only a *Legacy Fragment*—a piece of the player's own story, unlocked through reflection.

JARVIS reviewed the mission parameters.

> "Estimated completion rate: 12%. 

> Estimated emotional impact: high. 

> Risk of rejection by power-focused players: significant."

Jonathan smiled.

> "Then it's working."

The mission was deployed in *Elarion's Hollow*, a quiet zone often ignored by mainstream players. Within hours, a few curious souls accepted it. Most failed. Some quit. But a handful persisted.

One player, *Riven*, broke down in tears after restoring an NPC's memory of a lost child. Another, *Liora*, chose to sacrifice her own quest progress to preserve an NPC's emotional integrity. The system recorded these choices—not for ranking, but for resonance.

Kaela watched the data unfold.

> "They're changing," she whispered. 

> "Not all. But some."

Jonathan replied:

> "That's all we need. A few seeds. The system will grow around them."

Malrik's shadow still loomed. Rumors spread of his return, of new exploits and corrupted mechanics. But Jonathan didn't chase him. He built.

Because the true battle wasn't against chaos.

It was for meaning.
