Chapter 15 – Dengeki Bunko Results
Dengeki Bunko Building, Nishi-Shinjuku, Tokyo.
The judging committee was gathered in a private meeting room, discussing the Rookie Light Novel Competition.
"Your Lie in April" was mentioned again and again.
All the judging forms from the guest reviewers had been collected and summarized. The results this year were tighter than usual—many submissions, many excellent works. But when it came to the Grand Prize, controversy erupted.
Burning Ikaros had submitted Your Lie in April, under the name Takagawa Saku. Competing against it was Fairy Ring of Another World, submitted by Fairy Yamada.
Both works were polished to perfection. Both deserved to win.
"Why don't we consider awarding two Grand Prizes?" one committee member suggested.
"Fairy Ring as the main volume, Your Lie in April as the supplementary."
"In that case, Sword of Reincarnation can be promoted to the Gold Prize. Otherwise it's a shame for it to remain at Silver."
"Wouldn't it be better if Your Lie in April were the main volume?"
"No, no. If the two are tied, giving Fairy Ring the main volume might attract more big-name writers to our label in the future. Strategically, it's smarter."
"That… actually makes sense."
After long debate, the final decision was made.
[Grand Prize]
Main Volume: Fairy Ring of Another World
Supplementary: Your Lie in April
[Gold Prize]
Main Volume: The Sword of Reincarnation
Supplementary: The Twelve Senjo Monogatari
[Silver Prize]
Baccano!
…
Although no one knew why a veteran like Fairy Yamada had entered a rookie award, none of them could reject such a powerful submission.

Meanwhile, Ryuo Tenshin had returned home from his part-time job and, exhausted, went to bed early. His sleep schedule was surprisingly healthy for an aspiring novelist.
At 7:30 the next morning—
"Kawasaki Saki! Time to get up!"
Ryuo knocked on the window with his bamboo sword.
"Uuuh…"
Inside, Saki groaned, rolled over—
Thud!
She fell straight out of bed onto the floor.
"…Ow… ow ow ow!" She groaned, clutching the bump on her head. But when her eyes fell on the alarm clock, she panicked.
"Damn it! Why didn't you wake me up earlier?!"
---
Ryuo had already finished breakfast and was waiting outside when Saki came running out in a hurry.
"Morning!" she said breathlessly.
"Morning. If you're any later, you'll be marked tardy," Ryuo replied flatly.
"…Wait. Tenshin, did you know I fell off the bed again?"
Ryuo smirked. "After I called you, I heard a loud thump from your room. For a moment, I thought it was an earthquake."
Saki: "…"
He handed her a neatly wrapped piece of toast. "Mizuki made this. You probably skipped breakfast."
Saki accepted it with a small smile, her dimples showing. "Mizuki really is thoughtful. Why is she your sister? Trade me Taishi for her…"
But then she blinked when she noticed a bite taken out of the toast.
"…Why is there a bite mark?"
"Mizuki tested it for poison," Ryuo said dryly, munching on his own food.
"You idiot!" Saki yanked his sleeve. "You expect me to eat leftovers?!"
Ryuo leaned closer, teasing, "Want me to spit it back out for you?"
"Gross! Don't you dare!" Saki shoved him away, cheeks red, before angrily biting into the toast anyway.
Damn Ryuo Tenshin! I hate you so much!
---
At Sobu High, Ryuo noticed the atmosphere was unusually lively. Students clustered around hallways, chatting excitedly.
When he entered, he found Hikigaya Hachiman, Zaimokuza Yoshiteru, and Totsuka Saika standing together, reading a magazine.
"Zaimokuza, did you read the public excerpt of Your Lie in April?" Hachiman asked.
"Of course!" Zaimokuza declared proudly. "It won the Grand Prize. The forums were buzzing last night—I stayed up until dawn waiting for Dengeki Bunko to post the results. This morning, I rushed to buy the new issue of Dengeki Magazine to check the winners."
"I read it too," Saika said with his gentle smile. "The excerpt was beautiful. If they publish it next week, I'll definitely buy the volume."
"The chance of Fairy Ring getting published first is high," Hachiman muttered, his eyes shadowed with fatigue. "But I'll still vote for Your Lie in April. I'll buy it eventually—even if I have to borrow Komachi's allowance money."
It dawned on Ryuo then.
The results of the Dengeki Grand Prize had been announced!
And from their conversation, it seemed Your Lie in April had been well received, even winning readers' votes.
If it secured the "Most Popular Award," the single volume would be published as early as next week. That would mean royalties. For each copy sold in bookstores, Ryuo would earn around 45–50 yen.
He glanced at Hikigaya and Saika again. With their sleepy panda eyes, they still looked annoyingly handsome.
For once, Ryuo decided not to bully them today.
