For years she believed Levius's paranoia about her father making deals with outsiders meant betrayal. But now it made sense.
"So Levius's fear of you wasn't about treason. It was about you keeping connections with foreigners to help mother… help her find the pearls."
Ricardo's eyes softened, and looked almost with pride. "Exactly... Every deal, every seal of ships and ports was for her. Not for crowns or thrones. Just for her. And later…for you."
Nadeira's fists eased slightly on her knees. She didn't forgive him. She couldn't. But something made her chest lighten up a bit.
Ricardo was manipulative, but now, half of the things he was saying kinda made sense why?
She nodded slowly. "Then you're not my father."
Ricardo furrowed his brows, the words were sinking into him like blades.
"You're my ally," she finished, meeting his eyes.
