Chapter 1 - An Ambush

"Commander, the other attack fleet is getting overrun by waves of Decadent, the bastards had already taken down over ninety-nine percent of our forces!!" shouting in a panicked voice as he looks at a holographic screen displaying multiple, red, glowing warnings on it, a young man said as he turns his head around looking at a figure standing right in the middle of this room.

This figure, with tall, buffed stature and an appearance obscured by the service cap resting on top of his head, is currently looking at a massive spherical projection in front of him, the light reflecting in his eyes is of someone who still holds his calm despite the precarious situation they are in.

On the spherical display, nearly the entire area around the place around them is overrun by glowing, red dots, each one of them signifying a considerable amount of their enemy forces, who are clearly in an overwhelming advantage right now.

"Divert twenty percent of the secondary reactors' generated power to primary cannons two and three, disable omnidirectional barrier to compensate for the loss of power…" Looking at the situation at hand, this figure starts throwing out commands as he shakes his head, finding not a single path to escape from this irreversible loss.

Hearing the commands from the figure, the people operating in front of numerous projected screens turn to his direction, looking at him for a while before a smile of confidence appears on their faces, the panic they previously felt mostly dispelling as they hear these familiar words from a person that they trust with their lives.

"Men… and women, of course…" seeing that while all of them are still in quite the distress due to this encounter, the figure starts speaking to them once again, however this time without that authoritative, commanding and regal presence that he has previously, this time more like a true comrade to them, like a fellow that truly lives and experience life with them, only with his leading presences still coming out of his very being as well.

Hearing his words, along with the awkward pause, the people operating in front of the screens couldn't help but let out peals of amused laughter at this commander of theirs, their amusement not being affected even when in front of them, the only thing separating them from grotesque, foreign mixture of insect-like features and a human-like, decaying black flesh is a barrier that has the possibility of being torn apart anytime.

Of course, that wasn't the worst part of it all, as if their craft is going to be damaged anywhere else, then they should have no problem, as they are still capable enough to fight against these dreadful creatures should they manage to enter inside.

This, however, changes completely when they are in the embrace of the void of space, as compared to these monstrosities which doesn't seem to need anything else but food to eat in order to live, humans will freeze to death in the cold ruthless of space, and even powerful veterans like them will fare no better than average humans, perhaps only lasting a few more minutes compared to normal.

"Well, I have no excuses, this trap is so completely out of our predictions that here we are, the only few remaining ships against this massive horde of Decadents…" the figure said before he looks at the spherical projection in front of him once again, the glowing red dots only a few minutes at least away from their ship, the only thing stopping them from advancing even faster being the remaining ragtag group of smaller fighters that stops these abominations in their path.

"But in exchange for an uncertain survival of well, yourselves, I will guarantee the survival of your names for eons to come!" smiling at them bringing out a charisma unrivaled by anyone his people had ever seen before, the figure declared, bringing shivers down the spines of everyone not from fear, but rather from awe, as his words just made them feel like they should just bravely charge to their own deaths right now.

Of course, knowing their commander, these people are certain that if they are about to go down today, they will be marked as one of the greatest heroes of their homeland.

"This large horde of Decadents is a threat never seen before in the history of the Order and will pose a massive threat if left undealt with, hence I, Leon Crimsonstar, Commander of the Universe Class Star Vessel, Hegemon, will buy enough time for the Order to prepare for this disaster and deal as much damage to it as possible before me and my soldiers are overrun by it, but of course, should there be a path to escape, we get to live on for yet another day and have our rematch with these bastards."

The figure said as he looks with eyes still filled with hope towards his subordinates, these young men and women all looking at him with a fanatical expression on their face as if he's not just a superior, but rather an even higher figure to them, if anything, they might even consider him god given all his achievements in his time before he even become the commander of the Hegemon, achievements that only grow in number as he becomes the person commanding the craft currently carrying them right now.

"Hahaha!! The commander has given his order, time to go wild on these wretched things!!"

"I've been raring to have a good fight with these creatures for a while now, good thing they gave us this kind of practice targets to vent our frustration on!! HAHAHA"

"Time to let out some steam!!"

"Eradicate the Decadents, protect the Order!!"

"Hahahaha!! For Commander Leon!! For the Sapient Order!!"

"For Commander Leon!! For the Sapient Order!!"

Hearing the cheering of these men and women bravely charging through their nothing but certain death, the figure leading them couldn't help but shake his head as he feels like he is disappointing them all, however, knowing that there's not a path of escape for them yet, he feels like this is the greatest thing that they can do right now, resist until reinforcement arrives, and if there's no reinforcement, then leave as much destruction as they can on this massive horde.
