Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 – Silk Chains

The rusted shipping container smelled of damp metal and salt. Luo Tian stood before the bound woman, her wrists locked in thick, golden qi chains that shimmered faintly in the dim light. Her gaze was calm, unhurried, as if being tied up was simply a temporary inconvenience.

> [Prompt: High-value target detected. Releasing her may initiate unique quest line.]

[Warning: Possible connection to other System bearers.]

[Optional Feature Unlocked: System Hunter – Killing rival System bearers allows you to absorb their skills, equipment, and stored resources.]

Luo Tian's eyes narrowed. "System Hunter…?"

The voice in his head remained cold and precise.

> [Host's current skills grant dominance over most opponents. However, against overwhelming strength, technique is irrelevant. Even your outrageous abilities—combat perfection, boundless fortune, endless stamina—will fail against true giants. The only path to parity is to take what they have.]

Mei Ruo stepped up beside him, her voice low but sharp. "You don't know who she is, Tian. People tied in qi chains like these… their enemies don't let them live long if they escape."

He smirked faintly. "Then it's a good thing I'm not most people."

The System pulsed in his mind.

> [Rival System bearers possess raw attributes far beyond mortals. You are No. 1… but only if you survive long enough to grow. Every kill feeds you. Every kill makes you untouchable.]

That was enough. He stepped forward.

---

The golden qi chains hummed with power, radiating heat when his fingers brushed them. For anyone else, breaking them would be suicide. Luo Tian simply exhaled, letting Godslayer Instinct flood through him. His perception sharpened until he could see the subtle flow of energy between the links.

One strike. Not even strength—just perfect timing.

Crack.

The chains fell in molten fragments at her feet.

The captive flexed her freed wrists, eyes lingering on him longer than necessary. "Interesting," she murmured, her tone unreadable. "You're not what I expected."

"Neither are you," Luo Tian replied. "Name?"

She gave a faint smile. "Names are earned."

---

The sound of boots echoed outside the container. Too many for a simple patrol. Mei Ruo cursed under her breath. "They're closing in fast."

Luo Tian rolled his shoulders. "Let them."

The first three men through the door didn't even get a proper look at him. Godslayer Instinct guided his body like a conductor with an orchestra—duck, step, elbow, twist. Each motion was flawless, economical, and impossibly fast. A jaw cracked, a knee bent backward, and one man was slammed headfirst into the wall before he could raise his weapon.

Another wave poured in—he could tell from their footwork that they were trained, but it didn't matter. Every punch they threw landed in empty air, every swing of a blade met with the barest shift of his stance.

> [Infinite Fortune Domain Activated.]

A shout came from outside. "Boss! I found the side door unlocked—truck's still running!" The voice belonged to a dockworker, the kind who normally wouldn't risk crossing armed men. Today, luck made him bold—and, more importantly, on Luo Tian's side.

Luo Tian grinned. "Our ride's here."

---

They moved quickly. Mei Ruo covered their flank with surgical precision, the mysterious woman walking between them as if unbothered by the chaos. Luo Tian took point, Godslayer Instinct showing him the path of least resistance like golden lines on the ground. Every enemy who stepped into his reach fell in one move, as if their defeat had been scripted.

By the time they reached the truck, the air was thick with shouts and the distant wail of sirens.

The driver—clearly under the influence of Luo Tian's fortune field—jumped out without protest, tossing the keys. "Don't know why, but I feel like I owe you, man. Drive safe."

Luo Tian slid into the seat, started the engine, and gunned it. The tires screamed as they pulled away from Pier 9.

---

Minutes later, the harbor was a blur behind them. Mei Ruo leaned against the door, checking the rearview. "We lost them."

The mysterious woman finally spoke again, her voice smooth as silk. "Your movements… precise. Too precise for ordinary cultivation."

Luo Tian kept his eyes on the road. "You've got a sharp eye."

Her gaze didn't waver. "And you… have something that will make you a target."

He didn't answer. The System's voice filled the silence.

> [Observation: Subject may possess knowledge of System dynamics. Host is advised to remain cautious.]

Mei Ruo glanced between them. "Care to share with the rest of the class?"

"No," Luo Tian said flatly.

---

They drove until the city lights faded into rolling dark. When Luo Tian finally stopped, it was at a secluded overlook above the river. The moonlight painted silver across the hood of the truck.

The woman stepped out, taking a deep breath of the cold night air. "I owe you my freedom. But freedom has a price."

He stepped closer, his shadow falling over her. "What price?"

Her smile was small, dangerous. "Survival."

Before he could ask, she was already walking toward the trees, disappearing into the darkness without a backward glance.

---

Mei Ruo watched her vanish, then shook her head. "You just made a very powerful friend. Or enemy. Maybe both."

The System hummed.

> [Host has initiated an active quest: Hunter's Ascent.]

[Objective: Locate and eliminate rival System bearers.]

[Reward: Absorption of skills, equipment, and raw attributes.]

[Warning: The first target is near. Estimated time to contact: 48 hours.]

Luo Tian's grip tightened on the wheel. "So it begins."

---

They were halfway back toward the city when Mei Ruo broke the silence. "Tian… this thing you've got—this System—are you sure it's enough?"

He gave her a sidelong glance. "For what?"

"For what's coming. You saw those men—trained, armed, and yet you dropped them without effort. But if there's something out there stronger than that…"

The System's voice cut her off, directed only at Luo Tian.

> [Clarification: Host's current abilities guarantee dominance over common threats. Against overwhelming cultivation levels or higher-tier System bearers, current strength is insufficient. Solution: Hunt and absorb.]

Luo Tian's jaw set. "Then I'll hunt."
