Chapter 11 - Chapter 11 – The Chase

The rain-slick streets of Velvet Horizon glimmered under the neon haze. Somewhere ahead, the faint ripple of qi traced a path through the crowd — the man in the windbreaker.

Luo Tian felt it as clearly as if it were painted in the air. Energy Sense pulsed in his mind, showing him every shift, every step. His heart rate didn't even spike; Infinite Flow kept his muscles fresh, his breathing steady.

"Two hundred meters," he said quietly. "Heading toward the market district."

Mei Ruo kept pace beside him, her boots barely making a sound. "Crowds will slow him down. Don't lose the thread."

They cut through side streets, slipping between late-night vendors and flickering streetlamps. The target's qi signature wavered as he turned corners, quick and desperate. Luo Tian didn't need to run flat-out — he could feel exactly where the man would appear next.

[Recommendation: Close distance within 60 seconds for optimal capture.]

The man broke from the crowd and into an alley, glancing over his shoulder. For a split second, Luo Tian caught his face — mid-thirties, lean, eyes darting with panic.

"Now," Mei Ruo ordered.

They moved. Luo Tian's speed felt unreal, the world narrowing to his prey. Agility +1 from the last session made every step light and precise. The man turned sharply, thinking he'd lost them — and nearly ran into Luo Tian.

The stranger's eyes widened. "You—"

Too late. Luo Tian's hand shot out, grabbing his collar and slamming him into the wall with just enough force to stun.

Mei Ruo stepped into the narrow space, her presence filling it like a blade unsheathed. "Nice run. Shame you couldn't finish it."

The man struggled, but Luo Tian's grip was iron. Perfect Control made it effortless — not just over his qi, but over his strength. He could pin a man without breaking bone, or crush him if he chose.

"You're going to tell us about the rooftop woman," Mei Ruo said calmly.

"I don't—" His denial cut short when Mei Ruo shifted closer, her voice dropping to something colder. "We know you're linked. Your qi isn't clean enough to pass as a civilian."

The man's eyes flickered, betraying just enough fear to confirm it.

Luo Tian didn't speak. He just leaned in, letting the man feel the steady, untiring pressure of his hold — a quiet promise that this could go on all night if necessary.

"You've got two choices," Mei Ruo said, her tone like silk over steel. "Talk here, or we take you somewhere quiet where you'll really wish you had."

The man's breath hitched. "She… she calls herself Jade Veil. Works for someone… big. Bigger than anything you've seen."

Mei Ruo's eyes narrowed. "Names."

"I don't— I've never met him. Orders come through a middleman. I just… move shipments."

"What shipments?" Luo Tian asked, his voice low.

The man hesitated, and Mei Ruo nodded toward Luo Tian. That was enough. Luo Tian subtly increased the pressure of his grip — not enough to injure, but enough to send a sharp reminder.

> [Micro-pressure application: Optimal intimidation achieved.]

The words spilled out. "Qi-infused artifacts. Small, easy to hide. Some are weapons, some… something else. I don't touch them, I just deliver to a warehouse near Pier 9."

Mei Ruo exchanged a look with Luo Tian — Pier 9 was deep in the docks, far from the main streets. Perfect for hiding something dangerous.

"Where's the key?" she asked.

The man's shoulders slumped. "Inside my jacket pocket. Gold chip. It'll open the freight container."

Luo Tian reached in, retrieving the chip and slipping it into his own coat.

The System chimed:

> [Quest Updated: Infiltrate Pier 9 container. Threat level: Moderate.]

[Temporary Buff: Interrogator's Edge – Bonus persuasion against frightened targets for 24 hours.]

Mei Ruo stepped back. "We're done here."

"What— what happens to me?" the man stammered.

Luo Tian released him slowly. "That depends. If we see you again, it won't be like this."

The man nodded frantically, then bolted, disappearing into the shadows.

For a moment, the alley was silent except for the faint hum of distant traffic.

Mei Ruo broke it with a quiet chuckle. "You handled that well. Controlled. You didn't even break a sweat."

"That's the point," Luo Tian said. He could feel the hum of power still coiled in him from their session earlier. He wasn't winded, wasn't tense. If anything, he felt sharper now than before the chase.

Mei Ruo glanced toward the street. "We've got a warehouse to visit. But before that…" Her eyes softened, though the smile she wore still had an edge. "We should recharge you again. Pier 9 might not be forgiving."

The System's chime answered for him:

> [Dual Cultivation Session Recommended – Optimal combat readiness projected at +35% with immediate initiation.]

Luo Tian exhaled, already knowing he wouldn't argue.

They slipped away from the alley, blending into the city once more — two hunters, their secret power growing with each step, while somewhere far above, unseen eyes watched them from a rooftop, the faint shimmer of a woman's qi trailing in their wake.
