The one casting the magic was Doctor Strangewho had just arrived. He hovered in midair, hands moving rapidly as he maintained the Seraphim Shield, his expression grim.
"Hold it! Evacuate the crowd!" he shouted to the subway security and police rushing in.
But this subterranean worm's strength was astonishing—and it seemed able to sense the weak point in the magical barrier, repeatedly slamming its huge body into the same spot. Cracks had already begun to spread across Stephen's shield. He had to pour everything into it just to keep the barrier from shattering instantly.
"At this rate, I can't hold much longer!" Stephen clenched his teeth, thinking fast. A direct attack might trigger a larger tunnel collapse and hurt civilians—but if he did nothing, the entire station would be destroyed by this monster.
Just as the pressure doubled, a flat, casual voice cut clearly through the chaos and screaming.
"Whoa. That's a huge worm."
Stephen turned toward the sound and saw a bald man in a yellow tracksuit and a white cape standing at the edge of the fleeing crowd, curiously studying the giant worm as it rammed the shield again and again. There wasn't a trace of fear on his face, if anything, he looked… annoyed?
It was Saitama. He happened to be in New York to buy some things and was taking the subway home when he ran into this.
"Saitama!" Stephen shouted like he'd just seen salvation. "Be careful! This monster is enormous, it's incredibly strong, and it could cause a collapse!"
Saitama looked at the horrific mouthparts opening and closing then at Doctor Strange struggling to hold the shield, and nodded.
"Oh, got it. Yeah, it does look kinda in the way."
Without hesitation, under the horrified stares of everyone present, he not only didn't retreat—he took a short running start, then leapt off the edge of the platform, diving straight toward the worm's massive head at the tunnel mouth!
"Saitama!" Stephen cried out. He wanted to stop him, but it was too late. That maw could swallow him whole!
The giant worm also seemed to sense a "snack" delivering itself, adjusting its angle. Its enormous, foul-smelling mouth snapped open like an abyss, swallowing the falling Saitama beneath its shadow!
Just as Saitama was about to be consumed, some of the braver passengers even screamed.
But in the final split-second before being swallowed, Saitama shifted his posture—not to dodge, but to… accelerate.
Like a cannonball, he blasted himself straight down into the throat packed with razor teeth!
The next second, his entire body vanished into the worm's mouth.
"No!" Stephen's heart sank. He knew Saitama was strong, but being swallowed whole by something this massive… the consequences were unimaginable.
And yet
Right after swallowing Saitama, the worm that had been violently battering the Seraphim Shield suddenly froze. Its huge body convulsed hard once, letting out a dull hiss mixed with pain and confusion.
Then something even stranger happened.
Its long body began bulging and twisting in an unnatural way, segment by segment, as if something inside was racing through it at high speed, tearing it apart from within.
Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!
A rapid chain of heavy impacts thudded from inside the worm's body. Lumps swelled on its surface, then burst open, spraying disgusting mucus and shredded tissue. The agony made the worm thrash wildly, smashing into the tunnel walls hard enough to send rocks flying
But it was all completely futile.
