Chapter 2 - System start

Sleep came easy for my immature form even with my mind racing at the implications my rebirth held. The morning after was not exactly pleasant however.

"Look the freaks awake!"

"He doesn't even have a bruise anymore. What a freak!"

"He's coming this way, lets leave!"

Children of various ages and appearances filled the building I was in and from the looks and things they said I could guess that whoever owned this body previously was not very liked. Still I wasn't someone who got angry easily and ignored it to try and gather information.-

I ended up having to sit alone at the dirty wooden long table when breakfast was served, a simple porridge that was as bland as possible. I ate quietly as I eavesdropped on what the caretakers were saying to pick up key pieces of information. The first and most obvious was that I was an orphan and in an orphanage. The second is that strange things had been happening around the previous occupant of this body recently. Objects moving without being touched, catching fire without any source and even a wound knitting itself shut on his arm after he scraped it.-

I had read and watched far too much fiction to narrow down what exactly this pointed to but it did point at the previous owner of this body was special in some way compared to the rest of these normal children. I also figured out how I came to possess this body as well. As it turned out the previous owner had fallen down the stairs because of some of the other children and cracked his head on the floor. The care takers thought it was just a bruise and he'd been knocked out but didn't want to deal with a hospital and put him on his bed to sleep it off.-

'These people literally caused this kid to die with their carelessness. I don't think I can safely stay here unless I want to risk more "accidents" happening to me.' I thought seriously.

Another thing I discovered was that this body had my previous life's name of Alexander but the last name was different this time, it was "Drake". I liked the name, felt strong, important really. The accents everyone talked in though gave away the third piece of information, I was in England. -

The other children avoided me after breakfast and we were dismissed by the caretakers. I took this opportunity to slip up to my room in the attic and go through the drawers of the dresser belonging to me. The first had three shirts and three pants with three extra pairs of socks. The second had a box of matches and a small bag with what appeared to be school work and supplies for school. The final drawer had a few crumpled monetary notes and coins along with a half eaten chocolate bar wrapped in tin foil.-

I picked up one of the money notes to look over since I didn't recognize it from my previous life(I didn't exactly study foreign currency).

{Currency detected --- Initializing system}

"What!?" I exclaimed only to get a scolding yell from under the floor and wincing.

Before my wide eyes a large glowing white... screen? Window? I wasn't sure what to call it but a glowing white rectangular thing floated as text began to appear on it in perfectly legible english.

{Welcome to the Multiversal Merchant system! To begin the system tutorial please think the word "tutorial"!}

'Tutorial.' I thought with an eagerness as I very easily recognized this type of thing from the isekai anime I'd seen. The great systems, things designed to empower the ones using them to theoretically infinity.

{This is the Multiversal merchant system! This system is designed to serve as the be all end all of tools for the budding multiversal merchant! "What is a multiversal merchant?" You may be asking yourself and the answer is exactly what the title says it is, a merchant who trades with different universes for profit and power! To this effect the system has several functions for aiding the user in this regard!}

'This sounds interesting. Could I travel between worlds?' I thought intrigued by this new system of mine.

{The first function is the "system status" function that allows the host to keep track of their skills, currencies, treasures, items and abilities. The second function is the "system shop" function that allows you to sell currencies, treasures or items for "system coins" that can be spent in the shop for items that exist in the users world. A sort of personal supply chain simply. Be warned that it is still recommended that the user create actual supply chains as the items in the shop are heavily markedup!}

'I can see this being VERY useful at the start but becoming exclusively for rare or hard to acquire items later.' I thought with a nod of understanding.

{The third function is the "search" function. This function is free to the user but has a cooldown of thirty days real time. This functions purpose is to randomly choose an individual in the multiverse that the user may choose to trade with or ignore wasting the usage that time. All communication through the system is automatically translated into the users native language in order to better facilitate smooth trading!}

'Well that explains how I'd find trading partners.' I acknowledged mentally.

{The fourth function is the "Save and contact" function. This function costs a flat rate of fifty system coins to use both initially and every time it is used for the "contact" aspect of it. This function allows the user to add a chosen multiversal trading partner to the contact list if they wish to trade with them long term. The final function of the system is the "system inventory" function. This function serves as the personal vault of the user that is unbreachable and thus fully secure. The space of the inventory can be expanded at the cost of system coins with it's current size being one meter cubed in size! This concludes the system tutorial! May you attain unending profit!}

'Not very complicated is it? Makes it easy to understand at least.' I thought with a chuckle.
