Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Zombie That Became Sentient

Outside the Safe Spot, on the upper floor of a building, two fully armed men were scanning the surroundings with binoculars. When their gaze swept over the Sewer entrance, one suddenly spotted a figure leaping out. The figure moved so fast it vanished in the blink of an eye.

But that was enough.

Both men were overjoyed. One shouted, "Quick, quick! Call the captain! We've found Wang Han's Safe Spot!"

His companion immediately grabbed the walkie-talkie and called out, "Captain, captain, this is Old San! Come in, please! Come in, please!"

"Received, received. Go ahead, Old San!" Wang Peng's voice crackled through the device.

"Captain, we've found Wang Han's Safe Spot! We've found Wang Han's Safe Spot!" he exclaimed excitedly.

"What? Where is it?"

"It's at that place, at that place..." In his excitement, he actually forgot the location.

"Which place?" Wang Peng nearly spat blood.

"Ah! It's near Prince's Man—uh..." His voice abruptly cut off.

"Damn it, speak up! Where on Prince's Mansion Street?" Wang Peng's furious voice roared through the walkie-talkie, but neither man could respond. A bloody hand had simultaneously pierced through their hearts from behind.

Hot blood gushed from their mouths like a spring, but since the arm hadn't been pulled out yet, they wouldn't die immediately.

Then, the man on the left witnessed the most horrifying sight of his life—a gaping maw suddenly sank into his companion's neck. Sharp fangs buried deep into the flesh, blood spurting out as the entire neck was severed. The head thudded to the ground.

Bright red blood sprayed like a fountain. The other man, confronted with the terror so close, was scared out of his wits. If not for the arm still lodged in his chest, he would have died from sheer fright.

Seeing this man dead, the owner of the bloody arm yanked it free and tossed him aside before pouncing to tear into and devour him. Blood splattered, chunks of flesh flew, painting the entire room crimson in a gruesome spectacle.

Five minutes later, the door was kicked open as four or five armed men stormed in, guns at the ready. But the moment they saw the scene inside, they retched violently.

The leader fought back nausea and yelled, "It's—it's a Zombie! Fall back, now!"

But it was too late. As they turned to flee, a slender figure shot through the window and landed on one of them. A gaping maw snapped down, and the man's head vanished into thin air.

Terrified out of their minds, the remaining men opened fire on the figure.

"Rat-tat-tat—" Bullets left a dozen holes in their fallen comrade but didn't so much as graze the slender figure.

"Swish—" The figure moved with uncanny speed, dodging the bullets as the men fired, then kicked off the wall to pounce on another. With one bite, his head was gone too.

"Run!" The leader of the group roared, firing a grenade before turning to flee with his two subordinates. They knew they had encountered a powerful Zombie—if they didn't leave now, they would all die here.

At that moment, Bai Wen, who had been scouting for a sniper position, suddenly heard gunfire. From his rooftop vantage point, he immediately rushed toward the sound. When he raised his rifle and peered through the scope, he saw a horrifying scene unfold below.

Three heavily armed men were fleeing in panic, occasionally turning back to spray bullets behind them. Yet, it was as if Death itself was chasing them, their terrified screams echoing through the air.

Their cries quickly drew a massive swarm of Zombies. In their panic, their aim was all but useless. Soon, they were surrounded by countless undead.

They screamed and fired wildly, but the number of Zombies they took down was insignificant compared to the horde closing in.

Their rifle ammunition ran dry, forcing them to switch to pistols. Their headshot accuracy was flawless, but—

"Ah—!" One of the men was tackled by a Zombie, its razor-sharp fangs tearing into his flesh. Agony and despair wrenched screams from his throat.

"Grrr—!" More Zombies surged forward, and the armed men were quickly swallowed by the Zombie Horde.

The remaining two were paralyzed with terror. The braver of the two, after firing his last bullet, frantically pulled out a grenade, ready to yank the pin and take the Zombies down with him.

But at that moment, a lightning-fast figure dashed across the Zombies' heads, snatching the grenade from his hand. Before Bai Wen's stunned eyes, the creature opened its grotesque, bloodstained maw and bit the man's head clean off.

Gulp. The gruesome sight made Bai Wen swallow hard.

Then, the slender figure lunged at the last survivor. Too petrified to resist, the man had his throat torn open in an instant.

Blood gushed like a fountain.

Drenched in crimson, the figure finally came to a stop, allowing Bai Wen to get a clear look at her.

She was a female Zombie in a red dress, her long, withered hair framing a slender figure. Before turning, she must have been a beautiful young woman.

After killing the two men, the beautiful Zombie stood motionless, silently watching as the other Zombies feasted on the corpses. Then, abruptly, she looked up—directly at Bai Wen.

A chill ran down his spine. Without hesitation, he pulled the trigger.

Pew! The bullet left the barrel, but through the scope, Bai Wen saw the Zombie tilt her head with inhuman speed. The shot grazed her forehead, instead piercing clean through a Zombie behind her.

Then, to his shock, the beautiful Zombie flashed him a sinister grin. Or was it his imagination? For a fleeting moment, her lifeless gray eyes seemed to gleam with mockery.

The sight left Bai Wen utterly stunned.

The reason zombies are called zombies is that they have completely lost their sanity and possess no trace of intelligence. But what just happened? A zombie's eyes actually flashed with a hint of mockery? Good heavens, is this the beginning of a monstrous anomaly?

Just as Bai Wen came to his senses and prepared to fire another shot to end this menace once and for all, he suddenly realized the beautiful female zombie had disappeared!

She was right there a moment ago—how could she vanish so suddenly?

A terrible premonition shot up from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. Without hesitation, he slung his sniper rifle over his back and bolted.

Today was clearly an unlucky day. He decided to rush back to the Safe Spot immediately to lay low for a while, planning to find another opportunity to eliminate this supernatural zombie later.
