Chapter 17: Daughter, I'm Your Real Father! [Revised]
"You—how did you—" The youth named Tai Long exclaimed in shock.
"You're wondering how I knew, right?" Bai Wen chuckled. "Your horrified expressions just told me everything!"
The two immediately looked regretful. Yan Jiang said bitterly, "Since you've already guessed, we won't hide it anymore. Our Safe Spot is in the high-end restaurant of the TV tower. There was plenty of food stored there at first, but—it's been so long, and with so many of us—now there's hardly anything left!"
"So you set your sights on my Safe Spot?" Bai Wen sneered.
"It's not like that! We were just scouting the area, not planning anything. You have to believe us—we really didn't mean any harm!" Yan Jiang insisted earnestly.
Bai Wen laughed coldly. "I don't trust a single word you say. Right now, you're both my prisoners. Kid, go back and tell the others at your Safe Spot that I'm keeping Yan Jiang here. If they want her back, they'll have to trade food and water for her. If they don't come… well, this woman will be mine!"
"You—you can't—!" Tai Long panicked, but a bullet hole Bai Wen shot into the ground silenced him.
Yan Jiang added, "Tai Long, go back first. Deliver the message to your sister. I'll be fine!"
With a resentful stomp, Tai Long turned and sprinted away.
Bai Wen smirked at Yan Jiang. "Come on, since you're here, you might as well take a look at my Safe Spot."
He handcuffed her arms behind her back and marched her to the manhole cover. He tapped the cover with his gun—three long knocks, then two short ones.
Ten minutes later, the cover opened from the inside. Without delay, Bai Wen shoved Yan Jiang down and jumped in after her, quickly sealing the cover behind them.
In the spacious tunnel, Wang Han stared at Yan Jiang, who was sitting on the ground clutching her sore ankle, his eyes gleaming. "Kid, you go out once and come back with a woman? You're something else! Where'd you find this girl?"
Bai Wen narrowed his eyes at Wang Han, ignoring the question. "Why did it take you so long to open the door?"
Wang Han stammered, "I—I came as soon as I heard the signal! I didn't waste any time!"
"Let me make this clear—if you try anything funny, you'll regret it." With that, Bai Wen yanked Yan Jiang up and pushed her forward.
Wang Han gulped. After that note Bai Wen left, did he really think he'd dare lock him out? Unless he had a death wish.
He'd come to terms with it—since he couldn't shake Bai Wen off, he might as well get along. With Bai Wen's skills and equipment, having his protection made this place much safer.
Bai Wen forced Yan Jiang into the main hall. Sitting on the sofa, she looked around, showing no fear or nervousness. Instead, she marveled, "I never imagined a place like this existed! Are all those rooms stocked with water and food? There's so much—it must be enough to last for years!"
Bai Wen said coldly, "If you're a hostage, you should have the awareness of a hostage. Don't think about unnecessary things. Now, tell me, how many people are in your Safe Spot, and when did you start noticing this place?"
Yan Jiang chuckled, "Do you think I'd tell you? This is about betraying friends. Even though it's the apocalypse, I won't do it!"
"Whether you do or not isn't up to you. Let's see if your mouth is harder or my stick is harder!" With that, Bai Wen picked up a wooden stick from the corner and slammed it hard on the ground, threateningly.
"Go ahead and hit me. Without food, I'll starve to death soon anyway. I'd rather die by your hand—at least it'll be quick. If you think we're all afraid of death in this apocalypse, you're wrong!" Yan Jiang said calmly.
"Who said we're going to kill you? If you don't talk, I guarantee you'll wish you were dead—no, I mean, I guarantee you'll wish you were never born!" Wang Han chimed in.
Ever since Yan Jiang had been brought in, his eyes hadn't left her chest and thighs. It seemed he, like other men, was desperate for a woman. Bai Wen was curious—wasn't Wang Han a guard instructor in the Black Cloud Safe Zone? Didn't he have a woman to vent his frustrations on?
Of course he did, but those women were far inferior to Yan Jiang in comparison, not even in the same league. Wang Han was a normal man, after all. Faced with a woman like this, how could he not be tempted?
Yan Jiang cast a disdainful glance at Wang Han, as if looking down on men like him. She smiled at Bai Wen and said, "If you wanted to kill me, you would've done it already. There's no need to drag me in here first, right? I think you're just like this man—lusting after my body. But you're more hypocritical than him."
Bai Wen laughed. "You're overthinking it. Do you really think I'd stoop to his level and fancy someone like you?"
"You—" Yan Jiang nearly lost her temper. Even if Bai Wen were to pounce on her now and violate her, she wouldn't be too angry. In the apocalypse, survival was already a miracle. Compared to life, the body meant nothing.
But for him to say he didn't fancy her? That was an insult!
To be honest, Yan Jiang was quite beautiful—a standard oval face, short and delicate hair, and a slim yet curvaceous figure. To men who hadn't touched a woman in ages, she was practically a goddess.
Bai Wen wasn't uninterested—he just didn't want to waste his energy. Wang Han, however, was in high spirits, clearly itching to "make a baby" with Yan Jiang. If Wang Ya hadn't stepped out from inside, the old man might have already lost control and lunged at her.
Wang Ya was still dressed in her mysterious attire, revealing only her large, beautiful eyes. Seeing an extra person here, she immediately grew alert, ignoring her father and looking straight at Bai Wen with a questioning gaze.
Bai Wen had a rather good impression of Wang Ya. He said calmly, "No need to worry. I'll handle this."
Wang Ya seemed to trust Bai Wen completely, nodding firmly before casting a suspicious glance at her father, Wang Han. The latter nearly broke down, wailing, "Daughter, I'm your biological father!"
Wang Ya nodded firmly again, as if to say, "If you weren't my biological father, I wouldn't be so sure about it."
Wang Han left the hall dejectedly and returned to his room. A woman's skepticism was something he couldn't stand the most.
Bai Wen sat opposite Yan Jiang, keeping his gun pointed at her the whole time, afraid she might try something tricky.
Yan Jiang laughed, "Why so tense? My hands are cuffed, and I'm no match for you. Is there really any need to be this nervous?"
"I have to be cautious. I imagine these handcuffs are nothing to you, aren't they?"
