Chapter 98 - Chapter 98 — The Ninth Bell

The sound of the ninth bell never finished ringing.

It began.

Then reality interrupted.

The note stretched across Valenport, deep and ancient, shaking stone, water, and memory alike—and halfway through, the city seemed to seize.

Like the world itself had suddenly remembered something it desperately wanted to forget.

Every person on the street froze.

Every Resonant stopped moving.

Every leaking memory suspended in place.

For one impossible second—

Time held its breath.

Then the system detonated across my vision.

[ WORLD EVENT PROGRESSION ]

THE SECOND BETRAYAL

Phase II Initiated

[ ARCHIVE RELEASE ]

50%

[ CRITICAL THRESHOLD REACHED ]

The blue pillar above the Council Halls exploded outward.

Not as energy.

As information.

A wave of memories swept across the city.

People collapsed.

Screamed.

Cried.

Laughed.

Some simply stood motionless as decades of hidden truths poured into their minds.

Valenport was remembering itself.

And it was not enjoying the experience.

"GO!"

Veyr's shout snapped everyone back into motion.

The doorway to the Archive pulsed.

Waiting.

Open.

Hungry.

I took one step toward it.

Then stopped.

Because Mira was staring at me.

Not the way a companion looks at an ally.

The way a prisoner looks at a judge.

The way someone looks at a verdict they know is coming.

My chest tightened.

"Mira."

She lowered her gaze.

"I know."

The words were barely audible.

"I know what you're going to find."

Silence.

Ryn looked between us.

Loran looked deeply uncomfortable.

Even Veyr said nothing.

Because suddenly everyone knew this moment mattered.

I stepped closer.

"What did you do?"

Mira closed her eyes.

For several seconds she didn't answer.

Then—

"I helped seal you."

The world seemed to stop.

Not literally.

Just for me.

The street.

The Archive.

The bells.

The city.

Everything faded into the background.

All I heard were those four words.

I helped seal you.

Loran stared.

Ryn went pale.

Even Veyr looked away.

Like he already knew.

Like he'd hoped I would learn it somewhere else.

My voice came out flat.

"Explain."

Mira opened her eyes.

There were tears in them now.

Not dramatic.

Not forced.

Just exhausted.

Old tears.

The kind people carry for years.

"I wasn't born when you think I was."

The statement landed like a stone.

She continued before anyone could interrupt.

"My name isn't originally Mira Solenne."

Another pause.

"My real name was Mira Aurelis."

The system flashed instantly.

[ ARCHIVE CROSS-REFERENCE FOUND ]

MIRA AURELIS

Status:

Historical Figure

Classification:

Restricted

My stomach dropped.

Historical figure.

Not healer.

Not companion.

Historical figure.

Ryn whispered:

"...No."

The reaction alone told me she recognized the name.

Mira nodded weakly.

"Yes."

Ryn stepped backward.

"You died."

"I know."

Loran immediately looked even more confused.

"Okay, I officially hate this conversation."

Nobody acknowledged him.

I stared at Mira.

At the woman who had healed my wounds.

Saved my life.

Traveled beside me.

Laughed beside campfires.

Argued with me.

Trusted me.

And apparently—

lied to me from the beginning.

"You were there."

The realization emerged before I could stop it.

The memory.

The throne room.

The chains.

The sealing.

Mira crying.

Mira younger.

Mira present.

She nodded.

Tears finally slipping down her face.

"I was there."

Silence.

Then:

"You asked me to do it."

That hurt more.

Much more.

Because part of me had already begun expecting betrayal.

What I wasn't expecting—

was consent.

The seal inside me stirred.

Not angrily.

Almost sadly.

As if it already knew.

As if this was a memory it had carried long before I was allowed to.

Mira continued.

"The First Sealing required three anchors."

My pulse slowed.

Not from calm.

From shock.

"Aric."

She swallowed.

"Myself."

Then—

"The Archivist."

Every alarm in my body went off.

The Archivist.

The ancient thing beneath the city.

The being that remembered everything.

It had helped seal me.

"Why?" I asked.

The question sounded broken.

Because maybe I was.

Mira looked directly at me.

No lies.

No evasions.

No hiding.

Just truth.

"Because you were dying."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Not dangerous.

Not corrupted.

Not evil.

Dying.

The seal pulsed.

And suddenly—

a memory surfaced.

Not enough to understand.

Enough to hurt.

I saw endless darkness.

I saw stars collapsing.

I saw myself standing in the middle of something impossible.

And I heard my own voice.

Ancient.

Weak.

Tired.

"I can't hold it much longer."

The memory vanished.

I staggered.

Mira stepped forward instinctively.

Then stopped herself.

As though she no longer knew if she had the right.

"You weren't sealed because the world feared you," she whispered.

"You were sealed because the world couldn't survive losing you."

Silence.

Pure silence.

Even the Archivist's presence seemed quieter now.

Listening.

Waiting.

The system flashed again.

[ MEMORY RESTORATION ]

17%

[ NEW INFORMATION CONFIRMED ]

PRIMARY MOTIVATION OF FIRST SEALING:

PRESERVATION

Not imprisonment.

Not betrayal.

Preservation.

Everything I believed was unraveling.

Again.

Veyr finally spoke.

Quietly.

Respectfully.

"The truth is rarely satisfying."

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Then the Archivist's voice rolled through my mind.

Ancient.

Patient.

She tells the truth.

I looked toward the doorway.

Toward the darkness beneath Valenport.

Toward the being waiting below.

The being that knew everything.

The being that had helped seal me.

The being that apparently considered me important enough to save.

A new notification appeared.

One that made my heart stop.

[ ARCHIVE ACCESS GRANTED ]

Priority Authorization:

KAEL

Not Kael Draven.

Not Host.

Not Anomaly.

Just—

Kael.

The Archivist spoke once more.

Not to the city.

Not to everyone.

Only to me.

Come.

The word carried no force.

No manipulation.

No command.

Just invitation.

Then another pulse erupted from the Council Halls.

Far stronger than before.

The entire city shook.

The blue pillar flickered.

And the system immediately reacted.

[ ALERT ]

MASTER ARIC HAS ENTERED THE ARCHIVE

Silence.

Then Veyr swore.

A genuine, heartfelt curse.

"That's impossible."

The Archivist laughed.

Deep beneath the city.

The sound carried through stone.

Through memory.

Through history itself.

Apparently not.

The doorway widened further.

The darkness beyond it shifted.

And somewhere below—

Master Aric was already moving.

Toward the same truth.

Toward the same answers.

Toward whatever waited at the center of the Archive.

For the first time in years—

I wasn't chasing Aric.

He was chasing the same thing I was.

And I had no idea whether that made him my enemy.

Or my ally.
