Chapter 97 - Chapter 97 — The Door That Knew My Name

The laugh rolled through Valenport like distant thunder.

Not hostile.

Not welcoming.

Familiar.

That was somehow worse.

Because enemies could be fought.

Familiarity implied history.

And I was becoming increasingly concerned about my history.

The doorway in the Archive Barrier widened another few feet.

Blue light spilled across the avenue.

Inside, I couldn't see a corridor.

Or stairs.

Or any physical path.

Only memories.

Endless memories.

A river of scenes flowing into darkness.

The system flashed.

Identity Verification:

INCOMPLETE

Identity verification.

Those two words bothered me more than the rest.

Not unknown.

Not unauthorized.

Incomplete.

Like the Archive was looking at me and seeing only part of the picture.

Which, unfortunately, seemed to be a recurring theme lately.

Loran stepped in front of me.

"No."

I blinked.

"What?"

"No."

He pointed at the doorway.

"That."

Then pointed at me.

"Not happening."

Mira nodded immediately.

"Agreed."

Ryn folded her arms.

"Very agreed."

I looked at Veyr.

"Please tell me at least one of you is sane."

Veyr considered the doorway.

Then shrugged.

"I think you should go."

I stared at him.

"...You're the worst."

"Frequently."

The seventh bell rang.

The city trembled.

More blue fractures spread through the sky.

The Archive Release percentage climbed.

[ ARCHIVE RELEASE ]

31%

Thirty-one.

We were running out of time.

Fast.

Then the doorway changed.

The flowing memories slowed.

A single image emerged.

A woman wrapped in silver light.

Chains around her arms.

Tears in her eyes.

The same woman from my vision.

The same woman who had begged me to remember.

My heart stopped.

"Mira."

Her voice wasn't directed at me.

It was directed at the healer beside me.

Mira froze.

The color drained from her face.

The woman smiled sadly.

"You finally made it."

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because Mira looked like she had seen a ghost.

"No," Mira whispered.

The woman tilted her head.

"You still remember me."

Mira's knees nearly gave out.

Ryn caught her before she fell.

Loran looked completely lost.

I wasn't far behind.

Because the woman wasn't looking at me anymore.

She was looking at Mira.

Like they knew each other.

Like they had known each other for a very long time.

And that was impossible.

Wasn't it?

"Mira."

My voice finally broke through.

She looked at me.

Terrified.

Guilty.

Cornered.

Every alarm bell in my head started ringing.

"What aren't you telling me?"

Silence.

The woman in chains closed her eyes.

Almost regretfully.

Then she vanished.

The doorway returned to flowing memories.

Mira looked away.

That told me everything.

Not what the secret was.

But that there was one.

A big one.

The system flashed again.

[ MEMORY RESONANCE DETECTED ]

Subject:

Mira Solenne

Archive Recognition Confirmed

I read the message twice.

Then a third time.

And somehow it became less comforting every time.

Loran looked between us.

"...I feel like everyone in this city is hiding things."

"That's because they are," Veyr said.

"Some better than others."

Mira shot him a glare powerful enough to wound lesser men.

Veyr remained entirely unaffected.

Before I could push further—

the ground shook.

Hard.

Not another pulse.

An impact.

Something enormous had landed somewhere near the Council Halls.

A shockwave rippled through the district.

The blue pillar flickered.

Then stabilized.

The system immediately responded.

[ HIGH-TIER RESONANT DETECTED ]

Classification:

SS

My stomach dropped.

An SS Rank.

Not S.

Not pseudo-SS.

A real one.

The kind of warrior who could change wars by showing up.

The kind of warrior cities feared.

The kind of warrior I once stood above.

A second notification appeared.

Identity Confirmed:

Master Aric

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Even Veyr looked annoyed.

"Well," Loran muttered.

"There he is."

A second pulse erupted from the Council Halls.

This one carried intent.

Not power.

A message.

Every Resonant in the district felt it.

Felt him.

Aric had arrived.

And he was no longer hiding.

Then the Archivist spoke again.

Directly into my mind.

Not everyone else's.

Mine.

He comes to stop the ending.

I froze.

The voice continued.

Or cause it.

"That's not helpful," I muttered.

The Archivist laughed.

Again.

Ancient amusement.

History rarely is.

The system flickered.

Something new appeared.

[ SPECIAL CONDITION MET ]

Archivist Communication Available

I immediately hated that.

The doorway suddenly brightened.

The memories flowing inside it shifted.

And a path emerged.

A real one this time.

Stone steps descending into blue darkness.

The Archive was inviting me inside.

Not demanding.

Not forcing.

Inviting.

Which somehow felt even more dangerous.

The eighth bell rang.

Only one remained.

The entire city shook violently.

The release percentage jumped.

[ ARCHIVE RELEASE ]

42%

Not enough to destroy Valenport.

Yet.

But heading there.

Fast.

Veyr looked at the doorway.

Then at the sky.

Then at me.

Finally he spoke.

And for once there was no sarcasm.

No manipulation.

No hidden agenda.

Just simple truth.

"You have maybe thirty minutes."

My chest tightened.

"To do what?"

His answer came immediately.

"Figure out who you are."

Silence.

Then he added:

"Before everyone else does."

The doorway pulsed.

The steps descended into darkness.

The Archivist waited below.

Master Aric waited ahead.

The final bell was approaching.

And somewhere in all of it—

buried beneath lies, seals, and forgotten history—

was the truth.

Not about the world.

About me.

I looked at Mira.

At Ryn.

At Loran.

Then at the Archive.

For a moment nobody spoke.

Then Mira stepped forward.

Her eyes met mine.

And for the first time since I'd known her—

she looked afraid of what I might learn.

"Kael."

I waited.

She swallowed.

Then quietly said:

"If the Archive shows you something about me..."

A pause.

Pain flashed across her face.

"...please let me explain before you decide whether to hate me."

The words hit harder than any blade.

Because deep down—

I already knew.

Whatever waited below—

it wasn't just my secrets.

It was everyone's.

And some truths were far more dangerous than lies.

The ninth bell began to ring.

And the doorway opened completely.
