Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: Retail Therapy

Ami shuts her bedroom door with a soft thud, the argument with Celeste still ringing in her ears. She splashes cold water on her face, but it does little to wash away the bitter aftertaste of the clash. Why does she still get under my skin?

Her phone buzzes. A notification lights up the screen.

Sneha: Gather in front of GG Mart at 7.

Ami stares at it for a moment. A sigh slips past her lips.

Why the hell am I dragging myself down like this? she thinks. I have better things to do than sulk over her.

Shaking her head, Ami pushes the heavy thoughts aside. She pulls on a soft, cream-colored top and well-fitted jeans-armor for the night ahead.

Grabbing her cycle keys, Ami heads outside. The evening breeze brushes against her cheeks as she wheels her cycle out. With one last deep breath, she hops on and pedals away, letting the rush of air untangle the leftover knots of her mood.

Destination: GG Mart.

And maybe, just maybe, a night to forget everything else.

Ami finally rolls up to GG Mart, braking to a stop in front of the glowing entrance. She parks her cycle, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face, and immediately spots her friends waving at her.

Sneha (calling out): "Oi! Over here!"

Ami (walking over, catching her breath): "When did you guys get here?"

Soha (grinning, tugging her shopping tote higher): "Just two minutes ago. You're not late. Now let's gooo!"

Sneha steps forward with a dramatic clap of her hands, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

Sneha (clearing her throat theatrically): "Ahem...Get ready, ladies. Tonight… history will be made. New swimsuits, new energy, and a new level of chaos."

Ami (groaning under her breath): "Why do I suddenly feel like I'm walking into a trap?"

Soha (looping her arm through Ami's): "Because you are. A fun trap. Now quit sulking and join the ride."

Sneha smirks, already marching toward the glass doors of the mall like a commander leading troops to battle.

The three step into the swimsuit section, and their eyes widen at the overwhelming sight-racks upon racks of bikinis, tankinis, one-pieces, and every possible color screaming for attention.

Ami runs her fingers across a simple black one-piece.

Soha (snatching it away dramatically): "Nah-ah, babe. You can't wear a '40s aunty swimsuit.' That's a funeral outfit, not pool wear."

Sneha (appearing behind Ami with a triumphant grin, holding up a fiery red bikini): "Here! This one screams confidence. It's bold, it's killer, and it's totally your vibe."

Ami (eyes widening, recoiling): "No freaking way! I'm not wearing that, are you crazy?!"

Soha (rolling her eyes, trying to soothe Ami): "Okay, okay. Relax. We've got loads of other options. Let's keep looking."

Sneha (pouting, holding the red bikini close like a rejected masterpiece): "Tsk. Speechless. Skipping this goddess suit should be a crime."

Soha suddenly pulls out a cyan swimsuit that sparkles under the lights, almost neon-bright.

Soha (waving it like a trophy): "What about this? Flashy, fun, perfect!"

Ami (shielding her eyes, groaning): "Ugh, no way. It's burning my retinas. Do you want me to have an allergy attack? Too bright, too loud, too everything!"

The shopping war drags on.

One swimsuit after another gets rejected-too skimpy, too boring, too flashy, too plain. The floor around them slowly turns into a graveyard of discarded hangers.

An hour passes.

The girls slump onto a nearby bench, each holding a pile of failed options.

Sneha (throwing her hands up): "This is impossible. Three brains, zero unity. We're gonna die in this section."

Soha (panting, fanning herself with a price tag): "Who knew swimsuit shopping could feel like a marathon?"

Ami (slumping back, covering her face): "Told you… this was a trap."

Then Ami finds something.

Her fingers ghost over the rack of swimsuits before she pauses, her gaze settling on a single piece. It isn't the typical string bikini or a one-piece with deep cutouts. Instead, it is a swim dress, a delicate shade of pale blue. The fabric feels smooth and matte, promising both comfort and coverage.

She runs her hand down the short, cap sleeves and traces the line of the modest zipper at the neck, a practical detail that gives it a sporty feel. The bodice is fitted, but her eyes linger on the pleated skirt that flares out from her waist, a playful contrast to the otherwise understated design. It isn't about showing off; it's about feeling confident and free. This is the kind of swimsuit you can wear to the beach, to the pool, or even to paddleboarding without a second thought. It is practical, yes, but its simple, graceful silhouette makes it uniquely charming.

Sneha and Soha both nod at each other, satisfied.

Sneha (smirking): "Yeah, definitely. That one works for Ami. Stylish, but in her own quiet way."

Soha (laughing softly): "It actually screams Ami. Cute, comfortable, and not trying too hard but still catching attention."

Ami hugs the hanger against her chest, her lips curving into a small, triumphant smile.

Ami (relieved): "Okay then, I'm buying this one."

(she tilts her head toward Soha)

"Now… it's your turn."

Soha freezes, blinking.

Soha (pointing at herself): "Wait, what? Me? No, no, no. We came here for you. Mission accomplished. End scene."

Sneha (folding her arms, playful glare): "Nice try. You're not escaping. We're not leaving this mall until all three of us find something."

Ami raises an eyebrow, enjoying the shift of focus.

Ami (grinning): "Karma, babe. It's your spotlight now."

Soha sighs in defeat but then straightens, her lips curving into a smug little smile.

Soha (holding up her choice): "Okay, okay. I already picked mine."

The swimsuit she holds up is a three-piece set, the color a vibrant shade of sage green. The bikini top is a classic halter-style, with a playful knot at the bust and adjustable straps. The matching skirt is short, with two tiers of ruffles that add a flirty, feminine touch. But what really completes the set is the sheer, flowing cover-up. It's a light, gauzy material in creamy white, with a deep V-neck and a front tie. The sleeves flare out gently, giving it an ethereal quality that would billow in the breeze. The delicate green trim on both the top and the cover-up ties the whole look together, making it whimsical and effortlessly stylish.

Ami's jaw drops as she leans closer, her eyes lighting up.

Ami (grinning wide): "Damn, this one is too cute. Dylan will faint on the spot."

Soha gasps and smacks Ami's arm lightly, her cheeks warming.

Sneha crosses her arms, nodding like a fashion critic at a runway show.

Sneha (approving): "Not gonna lie, girl's got taste. That's a whole goddess vibe right there."

(she smirks, tilting her chin up)

"Now… brace yourselves. It's my turn. Time to show you both what you missed."

Sneha pulls a swimsuit from the rack with a triumphant grin.

The one-piece she picks up is a study in contrasts. From the front, it is understated and classic: a solid dusty blue with thin spaghetti straps and a simple, flattering neckline. The fabric hugs her curves, with subtle ruching along the sides that adds a touch of graceful elegance.

But the back-oh, the back-holds the real secret. A complex lattice of crisscrossing straps laces its way down her spine, creating an intricate pattern against her skin. The thin straps converge neatly at the base, tied into a delicate bow. What looks simple from the front transforms into a stunning, multi-layered design, a bold mix of effortless style and intricate detail.

Ami (grinning): "Damn… this girl. We got ourselves a bold queen."

Soha nods, her mouth curving into an impressed smile.

Soha: "Totally agree. Sneha, you're slayyying."

Sneha tilts her chin up, striking a mock runway pose with the swimsuit.

Sneha (smugly): "Heh. Told ya. You doubt me, you lose. Anyway-" (she flips the hanger like a mic) "-let's go and pay check. We've conquered the swimsuit battlefield."

Ami chuckles, shaking her head, while Soha loops her arm through Sneha's, tugging her toward the cashier. The three of them walk together, their arms loaded with bags and laughter echoing through the mall, like they've just sealed a pact of chaos for the adventures to come.
