Chapter 12 - Fifty-Fifty Chance of Death

[Time Skip End of the School Year]

[Perseus POV]

Xavier and I walk up the gravel path toward Nevermore's main gates, the afternoon sun casting long shadows over the courtyard. Students move past us in every direction, dragging suitcases, swapping goodbyes, cramming last-minute gifts into friends' hands.

"Hard to believe it's already over," Xavier says, shifting the strap of his bag.

"Yeah, it went by so fast…" I mutter, my gaze drifting toward the towers. My mind starts wandering back over the past year.

I met a lot of people, went to more parties than I ever planned, joined almost every club activity that didn't involve interpretive dance, and I got another girlfriend. Pretty good year, right?

Out of everything that happened, my relationship with Enid was probably the biggest win… at least at the start.

When I first met her, I assumed she was exactly like she looked: pastel chaos, bright energy, pure TV-series vibes. Not that I minded. But over time, I realized there was much more underneath.

She's full of insecurities she hides behind that sunny exterior. Things I didn't notice at first, but they start to surface if you spend enough quiet moments with someone.

Problems with her pack. Fear of never transforming. A strict mother who constantly tells her she needs to be "better."

She was always scared she wasn't enough. Scared people would leave when things got real.

And honestly? It made sense. If a teenager had all that stacked against them, not being insecure would be the weird part.

So, I decided to help her and the best way? Straight to the roots — by awakening her bloodline. The show basically hinted her werewolf form awakened under emotional extremes, right?

So, I got… creative.

I may or may not have tried everything from surprise night fights to, uh… gently placing her in a grave while she slept and filling it with dirt.

Judge me all you want. It worked.

Eventually, she fully transformed. A real, proper werewolf form.

The price? Three days of complete silence from her. And when she finally decided to talk to me, it was with claws. Kind of unfair if you ask me… it was for the greater good!

That awakening changed her. Now she's still glittery and full of chaotic joy — but different. I don't know how to explain it… more confident?

Confident enough to call me out about Wednesday Addams… multiple times.

And I lied—kidding! Naturally, I told her the truth about the deal I had with Wednesday. And, yeah, she was pissed. Understandable.

Before her transformation, she was too timid to confront me; now she's bolder and sharing me was never going to be easy.

I calmed her down, but ever since, things have been… stuck. We're still together, but the arguments keep coming and I can see she is never happy with my answers.

And sure, she's got every right to be unhappy. But if that was a dealbreaker, why get together with me in the first place? She knew about Wednesday from the start!

And while Enid was keeping me on edge, Wednesday wasn't exactly making life simpler.

Before the school year started, I gave her a phone so we could stay in touch. Technically, she did use it. I'd get daily calls from that number… just not from her. Morticia. My grandmother. Mostly Pugsley, asking a hundred questions about Nevermore, while looking scared.

How sweet is Wednesday, right? Too proud to call me, but "asking" her brother to do it, while listening nearby… sometimes I feel a little sorry for him.

Then came the night with Enid. I knew I had to tell Wednesday sooner rather than later — the longer I waited, the worse it would be.

Why so? Really? You need to learn more about women… you never know when you might get reincarnated through my blessing (I bless you) and suddenly find yourself struggling to manage your women.

As for how the conversation with Wednesday went?

I was talking with Morticia about some family business, with Wednesday in the background sharpening knives, because apparently the future husband of the Head of the Addams family should be briefed on these things... I totally agree!

When Morticia stepped away, I took my shot. "Darkling, I know you're listening. Why do you have your brother call me instead of doing it yourself?

Anyway, I found our puppy! Let me send you a photo — there, see? Her name's Enid, she's a werewolf, so she fits our deal perfectly. Which means I didn't break—oh, a knife!"

Why a knife? Let's just say that while I was talking, the connection was mysteriously interrupted… Haven't heard from her since. Probably just one of those rare natural phenomena called magnetic field interference. Just leave me be… hope is the last thing I still have.

So now I've got two unstable relationships to fix.

The good news? I'll be spending the summer at the Addams estate, so I can work on Wednesday first.

The bad news? I'll be spending the summer at the Addams estate and will need to survive Wednesday first.

But don't worry, I've got two plans!

My two battleplans that may or may not be used:

- I didn't break the deal, so technically, I'm in the clear. Which means I'm in the right, she's in the wrong. I will just tell her that.

- I "borrowed" the Book of Goody Addams from Jericho's Museum. If Wednesday's about to awaken her gift (guessing from the Tv series), she'll want to master it fast. This book will help and maybe earn me a "thank you" instead of a stab wound.

As for what happens to the conspiracy if I steal this book? Hopefully the Mastermind behind the scenes was smart enough to take photos of the book's pages and upload them to iCloud… if not, ehhh not my problem.

[Xavier POV]

Today is the last day of school before everyone heads home. Looking back, I was lucky to have a good roommate and friend this year. We found a lot of common ground and he even helped me out with Bianca.

I still remember a disagreement we had, when she accidentally used her siren gift to manipulate me. She stopped immediately, but it scared the hell out of me. What if she didn't stop next time?

After that, things hit a low point. Then Perseus came to me and said:

"It's normal to be scared, but people make mistakes. Like, I could kill you accidentally if I had a bad dream and the entity that gets summoned for self-defence, decided you were the problem. Still, is that a reason to fear me? …Okay, maybe bad example.

Let's try again. If you live with someone and sleep next to them, they could wake up one day, grab a knife, and kill you in your sleep… okay, also not a great example… but you get my point, right? If you trust her, you'll know she won't use her gift on you.

And for fuck's sake, you're rich — just buy an amulet that makes you immune to siren chant if you're such a pussy."

From that day I learned both an old lesson and a new one:

1) I should absolutely be scared of Perseus and whatever goes on in his head.

2) He was right. If I couldn't trust Bianca not to use her gift on me, the relationship was doomed.

So, I gave it another try — and now we're happy.

As for the pendant that suddenly appeared around my neck? Let's just say it had nothing to do with my newfound confidence.

While I'm lost in thought, we reach the gate as an old black classic car rolls up. A tall, lean Frankenstein steps out.

"Hi, Lurch! How are you?" Perseus greets, walking over.

"Hmmm," Lurch rumbles. Apparently, that's enough for Perseus— he pats his shoulder and looks at the car door.

"Spending the summer with the Addams family?" I ask.

"Yeah," he says cheerfully.

"And Wednesday? What are the odds she'll gouge your eyes out, like you said?"

Perseus opens the door slowly, I guess it's normal if the car is old and delicate.

"Fifty-Fifty"

"And what does it depend on?" I ask, watching him pull a black-ink stick out of his book and tap the car's interior. If the first strange thing could be explained, this one I got no clue.

"Depends on whether I can run faster than her"

Oh… he is fucked then. I almost feel sorry for him, but he's the one playing with two girls at once. Got too greedy.

Then he suddenly brightens. "Oh, sweets! Grandma baked these. Here, eat some."

He hands me the jar. I try one with chocolate filling — delicious.

While I'm chewing, he pops the trunk, tests something with the black stick again, then tosses his bags inside.

"Why are you checking the car?" I ask. I was willing to ignore it the first time, but now I'm curious.

"Well," he said while checking under the seats, "You never know whether Wednesday planted traps, poison, or both… you know, as a welcoming gift. So — how's the food? Tried the one from the bottom yet? Should be a different flavour."

Oh, that's why! Moments like this show our real friendship—he could've asked me to open the door, and I'd have done it without thinking, maybe even putting myself in danger. What a great guy!

I dug around in the jar and try another. "They're really good! She should send you some during the year so we can eat them while playing Minecraft. Also… how crazy is your girlfriend?"

Perseus grins."Wednesday's not crazy. Just… eccentric. Any mild discomfort? Acid aftertaste?"

I frown. "No… they taste fine. Didn't find that different flavor you mentioned, though."

He takes the jar back with a smile, gets in the car, and lowers the window. "See you next school year!"

The car drives off. I look down at the pastry in my hand. Why would I feel any discomfort?

Then the dots start connecting in my head.

You motherfuc—
