"I need to try at least," she said. She adjusted her top, then bent to lace her boots. Her hands shook just slightly, betraying nerves she refused to show on her face.
Kade crouched in front of her, forcing her to pause. "May, it's four hours. Four damn hours."
She met his eyes, fire sparking in hers. "If I quit in two hours, I promise I will change my mind about being Moonhand. But I won't quit before I try. It's just jogging, Kade. I'm not going to war."
"Not yet," he muttered under his breath.
"I'll be waiting in the office with painkillers," Kade said finally, giving in.
May leaned forward, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek. "You're so sweet, my strong, grumpy beta," she teased gently, trying to lighten the mood before it cracked her resolve. He caught her wrist as she pulled back, holding it a beat longer than necessary. The urge to claim her mouth, to tell her she couldn't go, nearly tore him apart.
On her way out, she grabbed a bottle of water.
