Dr. Gary stepped in behind Athena, his tone clipped. "I told you… it's more than just an illness but…" his gaze narrowed on the boy's sudden agitation, "…I've never seen him react like this before."
Athena's brows knitted, confusion swirling in her chest. Her heart refused to settle, hammering harder as though something inside her was responding to the boy's condition. She shook it off, reaching for her tools.
Whatever this was… something beyond science… she would uncover it.
Sarah bit her lip, tears shining. "Is it hopeless?"
Athena shook her head firmly. "No but this isn't only biological. Something else is feeding on him." She leaned closer, whispering more to herself than to them. "Almost like… a curse?"
Dr. Gary stiffened. "Don't say that word lightly."
She pulled back, forcing calm into her voice. "I'll need more time. I want to run some tests… and I'll need protective gear for everyone who visits him. His condition is contagious, yes but I won't let fear stop me."
