Chapter 30
Hazel's POV
I forced my heavy eyelids open, the sterile scent of antiseptic and faint hum of hospital machinery pressing in on me. A soft beeping kept time with the slow throb of pain that pulsed through my body.
When my vision finally cleared, the first thing I saw was Leah—standing in the doorway like a shadow I could never shake.
I tilted my head slightly, confusion knotting my brow. How in the world…?
When had the Vernons learned I was in the hospital? Who told them? The thought of their constant surveillance made my stomach churn.
"The fact that my every location is being tracked by the Vernons," I said, my voice low but sharp as glass, "I must be their hardcore idol."
My words rolled out like smoke just as Leah stepped fully inside, moving with a slow, deliberate grace as though she owned not only the room but the entire world beyond its walls.
