Chapter 19 - First Nightmare (2)

He had no clue how to wield a sword, but it couldn't have been that hard, right? It's only a big long knife. With that in his head, he swung it down over the thrall, only for him to miss, hitting its leg—though it did cut it off completely. Then another problem arose, the blade was stuck in the ground now. He tried to back away, but he realized he didn't need to when the black-haired boy wrapped his chains around the thrall's neck and pulled. This moment gave him just enough time to yank the sword out of the ground and behead it.

[You have Slain Mountain King's Larva]

The spell's voice rung out, confirming the kill. Before he could say anything to the boy, a horrid scream rang from the distance. Both of them threw their heads to the noise, only to see most of the slave traders, knights, and slaves were dead. Either they were squashed or gobbled up by the tyrant. The boy beside him grit his teeth and connected his chain to the remaining slaves' chains and ran to beside him, then ran to the right mountain while they ran to the left. They must have been planning something while he was busy running away.

"Wait, what are you—"

"JUST STAY THERE!"

The boy's immature voice was loud enough to gain the tyrant's attention. It began to charge in their… or rather his direction. That's when he noticed they were making a chain rope to the height of the tyrant's neck. Would it even hold? He had no clue, but there was one thing he knew: it was that it was the only chance they had.

Flipping around, he began to run, screaming as loud as he could in order to keep it on his track. As it got closer, they yanked themselves back, wrapping the chain link around the tyrant's neck and tying the chains to the wagons full of heavy materials. How they got the chains off was of no business to him as they started to run with him. It couldn't hold it for long, and by that he meant he could already hear it snapping.

"TO THE LEFT!"

One of the older slaves yelled out, and they all followed. Well, everyone but the one who yelled out, as he went to the right. They couldn't stop running, every second counted, so now they were stuck going left while he was going to escape. What a… what a dickhead!

Well, while he didn't believe in karma, maybe it existed. The tyrant broke free and instantly rushed for the right, giving them just enough time to manage finding themselves at a cliff. Under it was a lake that was raging. Every time waves hit the rocks, it created what seemed to be miniature explosions. It didn't help that it was freezing cold outside, so how cold must it be in the lake? Plus, the chances they just hit a rock that was hidden in the waves were extremely high. Sadly, it was their only option as the tyrant was now running toward them. Still, none of them jumped—until the black-haired boy jumped. For some reason, his body moved on its own, and he jumped down also. He could see in the corner of his eye three others jumping while two stayed and ran. Well, if he died, at least he wouldn't be mauled alive, right?

He doesn't know how long he's been out, but waking up, they were in a cave. He saw the young boy by a makeshift fire and two other slaves. One was an older male, white peppered throughout his beard. The other was a man who was most likely in his late 30s or early 40s. He was lanky, and his face was sunken in many places. It seemed the other slave who jumped with them must have died or gone missing.

"So you're finally awake, you scaredy cat."

The old man's voice contained humor in it, but he could still feel the underlying anger in it.

"Where's… the uh… tyrant?"

He didn't know what to say, in all honesty. It was awkward, but that probably shouldn't be what's on his mind. Then a voice came from near the fire.

"It's blind, or at least I think it is… it's showed up near us three times so far but ignored us every time. From what I can tell, it also has no nose, so it won't be able to smell us. The only problem is… we think it's camping out in the forest."

Well, that was good news—they had ways to evade it. But how were they going to escape the cave?

The lanky man shot the old man a glance, locking eye contact with him.

"I'm sure you don't have much time left, why don't you distract it while you let us three escape."

Well, that won't help the tension at all.
