Chapter 74 - Chapter 72: Another Kryptonian?

They toured Europe, soaring upward, marveling at the scenery. The snow-capped Alps gleamed under the sun. James and Wanda landed atop Matterhorn, surrounded by endless peaks and glaciers.

"Gorgeous!" Wanda exclaimed, her breath misting in the cold.

James's bio-field shielded her from the chill, letting her enjoy the view. They darted through peaks, Wanda drawing a massive heart in the snow with magic. They explored a blue-lit ice cave beneath a glacier, its crystals dreamlike. They even met curious snow leopards, unafraid of the newcomers.

At noon, they descended to a village, dining in a cozy chalet on steaming cheese fondue, the snowy mountains framing the window. "Next stop?" James asked, sipping coffee.

"Siberia," Wanda said, twirling melted cheese. "Always wanted to see it."

James glanced outside. "Siberia's good."

Wanda blinked. "Know what's there?"

"Honestly, never been," he admitted.

After lunch, they flew east at supersonic speed, Alps giving way to Russia's plains, then Siberia's wilderness. Under moonlight, the taiga swayed, wolves howling faintly. James landed by a frozen lake, Wanda awestruck. "It's so quiet."

He looked up suddenly. "There's a base."

Wanda followed his gaze, spotting low buildings and barbed wire at a mountain's base. "A base here?" she asked.

James's eyes glowed gold, super vision piercing the structure. "I don't know, but there's a girl in a cage underground."

"Criminal?" Wanda frowned.

James's expression hardened. "No. She's Kryptonian."

"What?" Wanda's eyes widened. "You mean Supergirl?"

He nodded. "Kara Zor-El. She exists here too."

Wanda's fists clenched, scarlet energy sparking. "We're saving her."

James's bio-field enveloped them, and they appeared above the base, a military research facility with automated turrets and armed patrols. "Those weapons," Wanda noted.

"Child's play," James scoffed.

Wanda dove, her chaos magic forming a shield, tendrils knocking out guards instantly. James's heat vision melted the base's floor, exposing its depths.

Three levels down, in a lead-Kryptonite cell, Kara Zor-El—Supergirl—huddled in a corner, blonde hair dull, blue suit tattered, wrists and ankles bound by Kryptonite cuffs.

The cell shook, the ceiling collapsing. Wanda descended, scarlet energy lighting the gloom. Kara looked up, weak, her blue eyes wary. Sunlight streamed through the broken ceiling, and her pupils shrank. "The sun," she rasped.

James's heat vision shattered her cuffs. Wanda gently supported her trembling shoulders, scarlet energy soothing her. "Don't worry, we're getting you out."

James scanned her, seeing her Kryptonian cells starved, barely a tenth of normal strength. "Worse than I thought," he said. "She needs energy now."

Kara gripped Wanda's wrist, her strength surprising. "Who are you?" Her English was accented, rusty from disuse.

"We're here to help," Wanda said, stroking her back. "Can you stand?"

Kara stumbled, nearly falling. James caught her arm, their Kryptonian cells resonating, her eyes widening. "You're Kryptonian?" she gasped.

"Long story," James said. "Let's go."

He opened a golden portal, carrying Kara through, Wanda following. They emerged on a Siberian highland, noon sun blazing. Kara trembled in his arms, soaking up sunlight. "Put me down," she whispered.

James set her on a flat rock. She curled up, greedily absorbing solar energy, her skin glowing faintly, hair regaining luster. Wanda crouched beside her. "Will she overload?"

"Kryptonian cells self-regulate," James said.

Kara screamed, her eyes blazing, heat vision scorching the sky, burning holes in the clouds. "Hold her!" James ordered.

Wanda's magic bound Kara's limbs. James pressed her temples, his bio-field stabilizing her runaway energy. "Breathe," he said, voice calming. "Feel the sun's flow. Don't fight it."

Kara's chest heaved, her heat vision fading. She collapsed, panting, sweat soaking her tattered suit. "I couldn't control it," she gasped.

James draped a spare coat over her. "First sun exposure's always rough. Your cells were starved too long."

Wanda wiped Kara's brow. "Why'd they lock you up?"

Kara's eyes flashed anger. "They found my ship. Treated me like a lab rat."

James and Wanda exchanged a glance. This world's government was experimenting on aliens, no surprise. "We're taking you out of here," Wanda said firmly.

Kara smiled weakly. "Thanks. But give me a moment."

"You recover," James said.

Wanda asked, "You're Kryptonian. When'd you reach Earth?"

Kara's voice strengthened. "My ship malfunctioned, drifting in the Phantom Zone for years. I crossed worlds, landing here over twenty years ago."

James mused. The Phantom Zone's relativistic effects kept her young despite being older than Clark. She was from another Krypton, another universe.

"And you?" Kara looked at James, curious. "Another Kryptonian, but I was locked up for years, out of touch."
