Chapter 17 - The Badge of a Leader

The sun had long since dipped below the horizon, leaving the busy streets of Barangay Burol II painted in the dark, quiet colors of the night. The warm yellow glow of the streetlights flickered on and off, casting long shadows on the concrete roads. The thrilling basketball practice game was finally over. The intense clash between brothers, a true test of their hard work and dedication, had been an exhausting but amazing experience.

Tristan walked down the street alone, his rubber shoes making soft tapping sounds on the ground. His body was very tired. His muscles ached, and his shirt was still damp from his sweat. However, his spirit was flying high. He replayed the game in his mind. He remembered his fast passes, Ian's easy layups, and Marco's beautiful, game-winning step-back shot. They had lost the practice game, but Tristan did not feel sad or defeated. He felt a deep fire burning in his heart. The scrimmage showed him that his friends were getting much better. They were no longer just kids playing around. They were a real team. They were the Black Mambas. They had gone their separate ways for the night, a quiet understanding passing between all of them. The practice game was done, but their long journey together was just starting.

Tristan finally arrived at his street. The familiar sight of his small, simple house gave him a very comforting feeling. He opened the front metal gate, hearing its familiar squeak, and stepped inside. Immediately, his nose caught a wonderful smell. The warm, welcoming aroma of his mother's cooking filled the air. She was cooking ginisang ampalaya, a healthy dish of sautéed bitter gourd mixed with scrambled eggs, garlic, and onions. It was one of Tristan's favorite simple meals after a long day of moving around.

He took off his shoes, placed them neatly by the door, and walked into the small kitchen. His parents, Armando and Linda, were already sitting at the wooden dinner table, waiting for him.

"Son, you are finally home," Linda said. Her voice was warm, soft, and very welcoming. She smiled and pointed to the empty chair. "Go wash your hands and sit down. Dinner is ready and hot."

"Good evening, Ma. Good evening, Pa," Tristan greeted them politely. He went to the sink, washed his hands well with soap, and sat down with his family.

"How was your basketball practice today, Tristan?" his father, Armando, asked while scooping a large portion of rice onto Tristan's plate. "You look very tired, but you also look very happy."

Tristan smiled widely. "It was great, Pa. We played a full five-on-five game today. We split the group into two teams. Marco's team won by three points at the very end, but it was a very close game. Everyone played so hard."

"That is good to hear," Armando said, nodding his head. "Winning is nice, but learning how to play together is much more important. Did you guys decide on a team name yet for the barangay league?"

"Yes, Pa," Tristan said proudly, taking a big bite of the bitter gourd and eggs. The food tasted amazing to his hungry stomach. "We decided to call ourselves the Black Mambas. We picked it because we want to be fast, dangerous, and hard-working on the court."

Linda smiled warmly as she watched her son eat. "Black Mambas. That sounds very strong and brave. I am sure you boys will do very well in the tournament. Just remember to always play fair and respect the other teams."

"We will, Ma," Tristan promised.

As they continued to eat, a quiet, peaceful rhythm settled over their small home. The sound of metal spoons and forks lightly tapping against the glass plates was a comforting noise. Tristan's mind was a whirlwind of fast thoughts. He had a secret mission to complete, a hidden reward to claim, and a real team to lead. The scrimmage was over, but his personal work was definitely not finished. He needed to get much stronger. He needed to become faster and smarter on the basketball court. He wanted to be the absolute best player he could possibly be for his friends.

After they all finished their delicious dinner, Tristan stood up and cleared the table. As was his daily custom, he carried all the dirty plates and glasses to the sink and washed the dishes carefully. He liked washing the dishes. It gave him a few quiet minutes to just stand still and think about his goals.

When the plates were clean and stacked, he wiped his wet hands on a towel. He kissed his mother on the cheek, tapped his father on the shoulder, and said a quiet goodnight to them both.

Tristan walked into his small bedroom and closed the wooden door behind him. The room was dark and quiet. He sat down on the edge of his bed, took a deep breath, and focused his mind. With a silent command inside his head, the floating, magical window of the basketball system suddenly appeared in front of him.

The familiar, bright blue, glowing screen was a very comforting presence in the dark room. It hovered quietly in the air, waiting for him.

Tristan felt his heart beat a little faster. Over the past week, he had been running very hard every single morning to complete his long-term system task. He had finally reached the goal of running a total of 75 kilometers. It was the final, exhausting task of his current mission. He looked closely at the glowing screen, and a brand new message popped up in bright gold letters.

Mission 3: FUNDAMENTAL TRAINING 3 - COMPLETE

Reward: 20 points and a Bronze Skill Badge

A massive wave of pure, unadulterated relief and happy triumph washed completely over him. He smiled so hard that his cheeks hurt. He had actually done it. Waking up in the dark, running until his legs burned, pushing through the pain when he wanted to stop, it was all completely worth it. He had successfully completed the difficult mission. He had earned his hard-fought reward.

He looked closely at the reward text again, and a new, very exciting thought filled his young mind. A Bronze Skill Badge. What exactly was it? What new skill could he possibly earn? The thrilling thought of gaining a brand new ability, a special power that regular players did not have, filled him with a quiet, powerful sense of hope. He was no longer just training his body; he was earning magical abilities. He was leveling up in real life, just like a character in a video game.

He focused his eyes and his thoughts carefully on the glowing screen. The blue interface, as if reading his very mind, smoothly changed to show his current player stats.

Tristan looked at the numbers glowing in the dark. A deep feeling of quiet, solid pride swelled inside his chest. His stats, his hard work, his daily progress, it was all laid bare right there for him to see. His numbers were getting better.

But his eyes quickly moved down to the bottom of the screen. He had a brand new skill. A Bronze Skill Badge. He focused his thoughts entirely on the name of the badge, and a new, helpful message appeared to explain it.

Floor General: Boosts teammates' attributes when on the court. (Bronze)

To upgrade your badge to Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Diamond you need to earn badge points. Badge points are earned by playing real games and performing actions related to the badge you want to upgrade, such as calling plays, getting assists, and leading your team.

Tristan's heart hammered loudly against his ribs. A new ability. A real, tangible power. He was now a Floor General. This meant he was a true leader on the basketball court. He was a player who could actually make his teammates play better just by being on the court with them. It was the absolute perfect skill for him. Tristan was always a quiet, passing-first player who was always looking for a smart way to help his friends score. He loved setting up plays more than he loved shooting the ball himself. This badge was made exactly for someone like him. He was ready to lead the Black Mambas.

He looked back up at his available points. He had 20 points to spend. He had earned every single one of them with his sweat, and now he could use them to get stronger, jump higher, and run faster. He sat on his bed and thought very carefully about what to do next. He knew he had to become a balanced, well-rounded player. If he only focused on speed, big players like Felix would easily push him around. If he only focused on strength, fast guards like Mark would easily run past him.

He looked at his stats, and a clear, smart plan formed in his mind.

His Strength and his Vertical jump were both very low at 12. He needed to improve those so he could fight for rebounds and take hits when driving to the basket. He decided to put three points into Strength and three points into Vertical.

Next, he looked at his Speed and Stamina. Speed was already his best weapon, but he wanted to be completely unstoppable on the fast break. Stamina was also very important because he needed to play the whole game without getting tired. He decided to put four points into Speed and four points into Stamina.

Finally, he looked at Acceleration and Agility. These were the stats that helped him change directions quickly and break down defenders with his dribbling. He decided to use his last six points here. He would put three points into Acceleration and three points into Agility.

He focused his thoughts clearly on the screen. With a silent mental command, he began to distribute his hard-earned points. He watched the numbers change in real-time.

Strength: 12 -> 15 (3 points spent)

Vertical: 12 -> 15 (3 points spent)

Speed: 25 -> 29 (4 points spent)

Stamina: 20 -> 24 (4 points spent)

Acceleration: 20 -> 23 (3 points spent)

Agility: 21 -> 24 (3 points spent)

As the numbers locked in, Tristan felt a sudden, warm, tingling sensation spread all over his body. It started in his chest and moved quickly down his arms and into his legs. His muscles felt slightly tighter, firmer, and much more awake. His body was literally changing and adapting to his new stats.

He looked at his new, updated status screen. A very satisfied, happy smile spread across his face in the dark room.

SKILLS

Bronze Skill Badge: Floor General (Level 1)

He was no longer just a fast, skinny kid who was somewhat agile. He was slowly becoming a very complete, dangerous basketball player. He had a newfound level of Strength to hold his ground. He had a better Vertical to jump for the ball. His Speed was dangerously high, and his Stamina would let him run all day long. His Acceleration and Agility would make his crossovers deadly. He was fully ready for the tournament.

He dismissed the system. He closed his eyes, and the floating blue window disappeared silently into the darkness. Tristan lay down on his pillow and pulled the thin blanket over his body. He drifted off to a deep, restful sleep. His dreams were filled with colorful, exciting images of fast breaks, explosive drives to the basket, the sound of squeaking shoes, and the triumphant, sweet swish of the net. He was ready for tomorrow.

The next morning, Tristan woke up very early. The sky outside was still pitch black. The roosters in the neighborhood had not even started crying yet. But as soon as Tristan opened his eyes, he felt a natural, powerful energy buzzing in his veins. The warm tingling from last night was gone, replaced by a feeling of incredible lightness.

He went through his morning routine quickly. He washed his face, brushed his teeth, and put on his running shorts and a faded t-shirt. Every movement he made felt a little bit sharper, a little bit quicker. When he tied his running shoes, his hands moved with a fast, fluid grace. He was completely ready for his morning run, and he knew he had a whole team to lead today.

He quietly opened the front door and walked out of his house into the cool, dark street. He walked toward the corner where the streetlights met.

When he arrived, he stopped and smiled brightly. There they were. Every single one of them.

All of his teammates, Marco, Gab, Kyle, Felix, Mark, John, Joseph, Joshua, and Ian, were standing on the corner waiting for him. They were yawning and rubbing their sleepy eyes, but their faces were full of a tired but very determined energy. None of them had quit. None of them had chosen to sleep in. They were a real team, a growing family, and they were all in this together.

"Good morning, guys," Tristan said loudly, a wide, genuine, happy smile on his face. "Are you guys ready for our run today?"

"Yeah, Tris, we are ready," Marco said, flashing a wide, sleepy grin. "Let's get this over with so we can get stronger."

They started their morning run. They were a synchronized, moving group of ten young boys. Their breath formed small white mists in the cold, pre-dawn air. Their shoes hit the concrete ground in a steady, unified rhythm. Tap, tap, tap, tap.

Tristan ran at the front of the pack. He immediately noticed a massive difference in his own body. He ran with a brand new kind of ease. His movements felt incredibly explosive and completely effortless. Every time his foot pushed off the ground, he felt like he was gliding. He was faster than he had ever been in his entire life. His newly upgraded Speed stat of 29 was a powerful new weapon.

Marco and Gab, who had been running with him for a long while now, were able to keep up with his fast pace. Their own stamina and their sheer determination were a silent, beautiful testament to their newfound commitment to the sport.

But Tristan also noticed something else. The other seven boys, who had only just started running with them recently, were also getting much better. Because Tristan was leading the pack, he could feel the magic of his Floor General badge working. His teammates did not look as tired as they usually did. They were no longer the gasping, completely exhausted boys from the first day. They were staying in line. They were a cohesive, tight unit. Their movements were a synchronized, rhythmic dance through the waking streets of Dasmariñas. They passed by sleeping dogs and closed sari-sari stores, a silent army preparing for war.

After their long run, which was a very successful and exhilarating experience for all ten of them, they stopped near the basketball court to stretch and catch their breath. They gave each other high-fives and went their separate ways, promising to meet up at their usual spot before school started. It was a brand new week, and a brand new challenge was waiting for them.

Tristan went home, took a quick, refreshing cold shower, and ate a hearty breakfast of rice and leftover bitter gourd. He put on his white school uniform, grabbed his heavy backpack, and met up with Marco and Gab. Together, the three best friends walked to Dasmariñas National High School.

The school day felt like a blur. Tristan sat through his classes, trying his best to pay attention. He listened to his Science teacher talk about biology. He read his book during Filipino class. He took notes during his T.L.E. (Technology and Livelihood Education) class. During M.A.P.E.H. (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health), they played some light sports, and Tristan felt his new agility making every movement incredibly easy.

But no matter what class he was in, his eyes kept wandering to the round clock on the wall. The hands moved so slowly. The anticipation for the afternoon was building up inside him.

Finally, the final bell of the day rang at exactly 3:00 PM. It was a sweet, loud, melodic sound that echoed through the hallways. The school, which had been a quiet, strict, and focused place all day long, suddenly erupted in a massive flurry of noisy activity. Students rushed out of the classrooms, laughing and talking loudly.

Tristan, Marco, and Gab grabbed their bags and practically ran out of the building. They met up with the rest of their teammates at the main school gates. Their young faces were alight with a shared, nervous excitement. It was time for their first official team outing outside of the basketball court. They were going to the Barangay Hall to get their official schedule for the upcoming intercolor basketball league.

They walked together down the street. They looked like a new unit, a brotherhood with a clear purpose. People in the neighborhood watched the ten boys walk by with purpose in their steps.

The Barangay Burol II Hall was a small, bustling building painted in bright green and yellow. It was filled with people getting papers and talking to officials. The boys walked inside, taking off their hats and being polite.

The Barangay Kagawad, the exact same kind man who had refereed their practice game the night before, saw them enter. He was a familiar, friendly face in the community. He stood up from his messy desk and greeted them with a very wide smile.

"Ah, the Black Mambas! Lads, you're all here," the Kagawad said softly. His voice was warm and friendly. He reached into a folder on his desk. "I have your official tournament schedule right here. It is going to be a very exciting season. We have a lot of good teams this year."

He handed Tristan a small, printed piece of white paper. The ten boys immediately crowded around Tristan, trying to look over his shoulder. Their faces were a perfect picture of a shared dream finally coming true.

Tristan read the paper out loud so everyone could hear.

Intercolor Basketball League: Opening Day - February 15, 2014

Game 1: Blue Whales vs. White Sharks

Game 2: Black Mambas vs. Red Foxes

Game 3: Yellow Canaries vs. Grey Wolves

Game 4: Green Iguanas vs. Purple Butterflies

A collective, loud gasp of pure excitement and nervous anticipation filled the air around the boys. They read the words over and over again. They were in Group A. They were scheduled to play in the second game of the opening day.

The Black Mambas versus the Red Foxes.

This was going to be their very first official game. Their first time wearing uniforms. Their first real test against kids they did not know.

"The Red Foxes," Marco said slowly. A competitive, mischievous grin slowly appeared on his face. He crossed his arms over his chest. "I have heard about them from some guys at the other court. They are a very good team. They are known to be really fast. But they are definitely not as fast as us."

"We will be ready for them," Tristan said confidently. There was a quiet, highly determined fire shining brightly in his dark eyes. As the Floor General, he felt a deep responsibility to keep his team focused. "We will be ready for anyone they put in front of us. We have been waking up early. We have been working hard every single day. We are a team. We are the Black Mambas."

The entire team, a wonderful mix of old, childhood friends and brand new teammates, all nodded their heads in strong agreement. They looked at each other. They were brothers now. They were a solid unit, and they were in this fight together. They finally had their first scheduled game. They knew the name of their first opponent. They had their first big challenge. They were not scared. They were ready.

"Alright, guys," Tristan said. His voice was very clear, calm, and full of natural confidence. "Let's head back to our court. We need to sit down and talk about our game plan for the Foxes. We need to figure out our main strengths and learn how to exploit their weaknesses. We still have a few weeks to practice before February 15. We will be ready."

They thanked the Kagawad and walked out of the Barangay Hall. As their discussion ended, they bid farewell to each other and went their separate ways to change out of their school uniforms. Their young hearts were full of a quiet, thrilling sense of bright hope. They had their first real game. They had their first real opponent. They had their first real challenge. They were finally ready. They were the Black Mambas, and their grand, exciting journey to the championship had officially just begun.
