"OK! But I think you should say hello to the other staff in each department," Mia replied, leading the way.
I couldn't agree more. I smiled at every employee Mia introduced, though most faces were unfamiliar. The people I used to know were gone some had left the company, others had been quietly reassigned.
I didn't press for reasons. Today wasn't the right time.
Some staff members greeted me warmly enough, though the friendliness felt practiced. Then there was the new intern in administration. Her expression betrayed surprise when she heard I was Mrs. Westwood, but she smoothed it over quickly with a polite smile.
She couldn't have been here more than a year, yet she wore a Chanel suit, Tiffany & Co. earrings, and, when I shook her hand, I caught the glint of a Cartier watch. The luxury screamed out of place for someone in her position.
