Liam's pov

The evening air was heavy, oppressive even, as I made my way back toward the pack house. The woods around me were eerily quiet, the usual rustling of leaves and distant hoots replaced by a silence that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on edge. Something was wrong, and I felt it deep in my gut.

As I reached the clearing near the pack house, the faintest scent hit me,sweet and heady, like wildflowers blooming under the summer sun. My steps faltered, my chest tightening. It was her. Pecan.

Her heat.

I gritted my teeth, fighting the immediate surge of need that clawed at me. This wasn't the first time her heat had surfaced, but this… this was different. It was stronger, sharper, as though it was calling to me directly, demanding my attention.

"Liam…"

Her voice was a whisper, carried by the breeze, and I turned to see her leaning against a tree just off the path. She looked like she was barely holding herself together, her cheeks flushed, her breathing uneven.
