MHGA Chapter 208 – Lucy Appears

David was running faster and faster through Night City.

He had never felt this good before.

Originally, David had just wanted to test his physical limits. But for some reason...

Even with his cyberware burning hot on his back, he didn't feel any real side effects.

"...?"

With a bit of confusion, David had spent the entire day finding someone to buy the treasure Laios had given him. Eventually, he exchanged it for a large sum of money.

Now David stared at the number on his account while sitting dazed on the subway.

That string of digits—far beyond what Gloria had ever earned from years of work.

Just the weight of a few kilos of gold had lifted him from his financial woes, not to mention the added value of the artistic features on the treasure.

David didn't care about art. He had sold the treasure as quickly as possible and exchanged it for money.

And now... he could be considered a rich man in Night City.

"Ha... hahaha..."

David stared at the numbers, but his laughter lacked joy.

In a city where so many people struggled to survive, there were still those who would spend this much money on a single piece of gold artwork.

He and Gloria's long-standing hardship had been resolved in such an absurdly easy way.

It was ridiculous. Laughable.

And that absurdity only deepened David's understanding of how twisted Night City truly was.

It was then—

Out of the corner of his eye, David caught sight of a shadow.

A figure straight out of his dreams passed by him. In that instant, David's head snapped up, and his Sandevistan flared to life.

Right in front of him stood the girl he had seen in his dreams.

She was even holding a chip she had just swiped from someone else.

David... stood frozen in time, watching her inside the Sandevistan's slowed-down world.

Staring at her face, David's thoughts drifted far.

He realized—what the Sandevistan truly gave him wasn't the ability to move fast...

It was time to think.

Just like now.

David looked at Lucy, recalling everything he had learned from Kairo Retsu.

That was no longer his future. Those things... would never happen again.

But still, he couldn't stop dreaming of this dazzling, dangerous, and—somehow—fragile girl.

Thinking this, David reached out—

And grabbed the hand Lucy was using to steal the chip.

Lucy hadn't expected anyone to suddenly grab her hand. Instinctively, she tried to scan the person behind her—David—preparing to use her netrunner abilities to escape.

But as her eyes lit up, ready to upload malware and overload David to make him let go—

She saw David's flushed red face.

"I... I'm David Martinez."

He stammered, nervous. "I... I want to... um... get to know you."

"…?"

Lucy looked visibly puzzled. Now wasn't really the time to reply. So she grabbed David by the collar and dragged him into the vestibule between the train cars.

"You saw what I was doing, right?" she said, glaring at the clueless guy in front of her. "What? Some Arasaka honor student trying to play hero now?"

"I dropped out," David said, panting. "I just wanted to get to know you…"

Before he could finish—

Lucy shoved him against the train door, arm pressed to his throat.

A monowire was already wrapped around his neck.

If David made even a single wrong move, Lucy looked like she'd slice his head off with it.

Dangerous. Lethal.

But David...

Felt like he could actually break free of the monowire if he wanted to.

"Hah... A kid like you has a Sandevistan? This model, even?"

Lucy smirked. "What—think slapping on some cyberware means you can do anything now? Got some hero complex, huh?"

"I really just wanted to get to know you," David said. "Because you... you…"

He searched every corner of his brain for the right word. But all he could blurt out was:

"You're really pretty…"

"Ha… hahahahaha!"

Lucy froze for a second, then burst out laughing.

She still had the monowire wrapped around his neck, but one hand clutched her stomach from laughing.

"So it's not some wannabe hero... just a lovestruck idiot trying to flirt?"

"What, you into girls like me?"

She tilted David's chin up. "Give me a break. I'm not your type."

"I… I like you!"

David summoned all his courage and declared it:

"I do like girls like you!"

He stood up straight, stepped forward toward Lucy:

"I really like girls like you! I want to know your name!"

"I'm David Martinez!" he said, eyes locked on hers. "And I'm currently single!"

Lucy looked at him—then loosened the monowire.

"You've got to be kidding me… I thought you were some hotshot, but you're just some dumb kid with a crush…"

"I'm not! I've thought about it a lot!" David insisted. "And I can help you too!"

"Don't need it." Lucy turned to leave. "Dumb kids like you should just go home, take a shower, and go to bed. Stop wandering around."

"Eh…?"

David was stunned.

He watched Lucy's retreating figure—and chased after her.

Wait… this wasn't how things were supposed to go.

Why wasn't she asking him to help steal chips?

Why was it different?

His head was full of questions—but he kept running after her.

"I really can help you!" David shouted. "I can be useful, right? I'm fast—no one will even notice…"

He chased Lucy to the next vestibule, but she suddenly spun around, grabbed his wrist, and slammed him against the wall.

David didn't resist too hard—afraid he might break free too easily.

Lucy narrowed her eyes:

"I don't have time to play with kids like you."

"I'm getting off here!"
