"Trust me." His tone softened, almost human, almost. "I want to help you."
Silence swelled between us, broken only by the sound of my heartbeat hammering in my ears. His words were poison, but poison sometimes has truth in it.
I stepped closer, close enough to see the storm behind his eyes and my voice dropped.
"Then tell me." My breath trembled, but I held his gaze. "Who is my mother?"
"The journal, first?" Ezra's voice was sharp, like a blade pressing against my throat.
I lifted my chin, forcing my eyes not to waver. "Get out, Ezra!"
His smile was faint, yet heavy with hidden venom. "Listen, Annalyn, trust me, one day you will regret this because you will use the journal to search for me… but by then, I won't listen."
I stepped closer, staring straight into his eyes, daring him to break. "Get the hell out, Ezra!"
For the first time, he faltered and he turned his back and left without another word.
