Matteo didn't hesitate. "His distant cousin, just came back from the States few days ago."
The officer's gaze flicked from Matteo, then to me, then to Celix, suspicion gleamed in his eyes. "Officer Leo resigned yesterday."
My heart jump because how can Officer Leo resigned?
Matteo's smile faltered, his eyes flicking toward us, then he leaned in, voice dripping with false ease. "Really? Can I know why?"
The officer shuffled a few papers, his tone casual. "He said one of his family members is gravely ill and needed personal care. You should know about that... if you're truly family."
Matteo laughed lightly, though I could see his jaw tighten. "Yes… of course I know... I just didn't expect him to quit the job so suddenly."
The officer shrugged. "Okay, if you don't mind I will love to return to what I was doing."
Matteo's eyes sharpened. "Ooh, one more thing, can you give me his address?"
The officer's expression hardened. "That, I cannot disclose."
