Chapter 6 - Chapter 6

Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan.

"Hello, General."

"Hello, Mr. Stark," the general said, shaking Tony's outstretched hand. "I'm looking forward to your weapons demonstration today."

"Thanks."

In a desolate blasting site, Tony, wearing a silver-gray slim-fit suit tailored for him by Mark and a pair of brown gold-framed sunglasses, was giving a serious speech before the weapons display.

"Which is better, to be feared or to be respected? Do I think both are too much?

Therefore, I humbly present the flagship of Stark Industries' Freedom Series, a missile system incorporating our patented impact technology.

They often say the best weapon is the one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree. I prefer weapons you only have to use once. That's what my father did, and that's what my country did, and it's been successful so far.

Find an excuse to launch this thing, and I personally guarantee that the bad guys will never try to crawl out of their holes again."

As soon as he finished speaking, Tony waved his hand to signal the turret to launch the missile.

Whoosh——

As a missile quickly took off and headed towards the preset target in the shooting range behind Tony, when it approached the target, the entire missile suddenly began to disintegrate and split into dozens of smaller missiles.

"FYI, this is our Jericho missile!"

Along with Tony's pretentious words, there appeared the violent aftermath of a devastating attack on a target more than ten kilometers away. The strong airflow even blew off the hats of the soldiers on the scene.

The presentation was excellent, and it could be said that the purpose of this trip had been successfully achieved. Tony walked over to a large metal box and pulled out a glass and champagne that had been prepared. "For every transaction over $500 million, I'll give you one of these. As a token of peace." Tony raised his glass and drank it all in one gulp.

Tony, high-spirited at the time, was unaware that a conspiracy against him was brewing in secret. After the deal was done, Tony, excited, did not board the armored vehicle specially prepared for him, but boarded an ordinary military vehicle. For him, this was a little fun on the boring journey home.

His good friend Colonel Rhodes didn't try to persuade Tony much, and let him do what he wanted. "I'll follow behind to protect you. See you at the base."

"Okay, see you at the base. Brave soldiers, let's head towards our destination!"

In the car, feeling the roar of the military vehicle's engine galloping on the sand and the rugged road testing the limits of the tires and shock absorbers, Tony felt his blood boiling and his passion surging.

"Hey boy, do you have a girlfriend?" Tony suddenly asked a fully armed and handsome soldier beside him.

"Not yet, sir!" The young man was obviously not a veteran who had been in the army for many years. He straightened his back and answered in a very loud voice.

"Okay, relax, guys. I'm just chatting with you, and I'm not your superior. After all, the journey is long and boring, we have to find some fun." As he spoke, Tony unbuttoned his suit jacket and reached out to take off the tie around his neck. "It's really hot in the desert!"

"Mr. Stark..." a soldier bravely asked, "I heard that you slept with the cover girl of Maxim's Men's Magazine for the past 12 months. Is that true?"

This veteran was obviously much more experienced than the young man just now, and he started talking about a topic that everyone was very interested in.

"This is…"

BOOM!

Before the soldiers could get the answer they were expecting, a shell landed in the middle of the convoy, interrupting what Tony was about to say.

The car was overturned by the air wave, and the soldiers on the car suffered varying degrees of injuries and fainted. Only Tony, who was protected in the middle, was lucky enough to escape.

After struggling to get out of the lathe and looking at the scene in front of him, Tony quickly took out his cell phone to call for help. But before his call went through, a missile landed next to him.

Boom! Another explosion struck, sending Tony flying. Protected by his graphene suit, his torso was spared. However, because he'd unbuttoned his suit in the car, the blast failed to protect his heart. Shrapnel still struck Tony's chest, putting his life in imminent danger. Just before he lost consciousness, he spotted the Stark logo clearly etched on the remnant of the missile that had attacked him.

"…" When Tony woke up again, the environment he was in had changed drastically.

The surroundings looked like a dark, dry cave, and I was lying on a folding iron bed. Turning around, I saw a strange man I had never seen before trimming his beard in the dim light.

Feeling something strange in his chest, Tony raised his head with difficulty and looked at his chest. He then discovered a strange device. Two wires extended from it and connected to the battery beside the bed. Without thinking, Tony reached out and dismantled the strange device.

"If I were you, I wouldn't do that." At this time, the strange man spoke up to stop Tony's action.

"What did you do to me?" After trying hard to calm his inner panic, Tony calmly asked his question to the strange man.

"What did I do? I saved your life. I tried my best to remove some shrapnel, but because they are too small and the conditions here are limited, some are still left. They could follow the blood flow to your heart at any time." Seeing the doubt on Tony's face, he picked up a small glass bottle from the table beside him and showed it to Tony. "Want to see it? I have a souvenir here, take a look."

Taking the small bottle, Tony saw the tiny shrapnel inside through the dim light.

The stranger next to him continued his speech: "I've seen many people with this kind of injuries in our village. We call them the 'living dead' because after a week the shrapnel will enter their vital organs."

"What about this, what is this?" Tony put down the bottle filled with shrapnel and knocked on the iron lump on his chest.

"That's an electromagnet, powered by the car battery, and it keeps the shrapnel from entering your heart."

Now Tony was regretting not buttoning the damn buttons on his suit properly.

"Have you seen the suit I'm wearing?"

"Here, it's on the table over there, but don't expect to find anything. The fact that it's here proves that everything on it has been looted."

"No, what's important is the suit itself. It's a gift from my son." Thinking of the sad expressions of Mark and Pepper who were thousands of miles away after hearing the news of his attack, Tony felt a little guilty that he had not cherished the important people around him.
