Chapter 12 - I am Not a Superhero

Ivan: "So, are we ready to go?"

Mr. Keery: "Yes. Let's go conquer them."

The air around them was heavy with anticipation. Everyone stood near the portal capsule, silent yet brimming with emotion. Ivan walked over to Mikk, his steps slow and deliberate. The room was dim, lit only by the flickering emergency bulbs, and a gentle hum filled the silence—almost as if the building itself knew something monumental was about to happen.

Ivan hugged Mikk tightly. His eyes glistened, his voice shook.

Ivan: "Thank you, Mikk—and everyone—for giving me an opportunity to make memories with you all. I'll never forget them. Thank you, Mikk, for giving me your house to live in."

Mikk placed a firm hand on Ivan's shoulder but didn't speak. He just nodded, his eyes misty with unshed tears. Ivan then turned toward Sharon, who was standing quietly near the wall, her arms folded, her face pale with worry.

Ivan: "Thanks, Sharon, for trusting me. I promise I'll save everyone—even if it costs me my life. I won't break your trust."

Tears rolled down Ivan's cheeks. The silence in the room thickened. Sharon, moved beyond words, rushed forward and hugged Ivan tightly. She sobbed into his shoulder, and Ivan held her just as tightly. Their tears mixed in a painful yet beautiful moment.

Sharon: "Please don't say that, Ivan. You're like a brother to me—just like Mikk. I don't want to lose you, Ivan. I trust you... I trust you."

Ivan (softly): "Thanks… sister."

After a moment, Sharon stepped back, wiping her tears. Then she turned to James and hugged him too, clinging to him like it might be the last time.

Sharon: "James, please protect yourself and everyone else. I know you will. I believe in you."

She kissed him lightly on the cheek. James, swallowing his emotions, nodded with a determined look in his eyes.

James: "Okay, let's proceed now. Let's end this whole damn thing. Let's save Hazel and her mom. Let's go, guys!"

Mr. Keery: "Wait a minute. How did I not think of this earlier? Is there a fixed location where we'll land?"

Ivan: ""We'll land where I picture, and I think the lab's hall is safest because it's mostly empty. Also, I don't know any other safe place in the lab. But we must stay alert."

James and Mr. Keery (in unison): "Okay."

Ivan took the capsule in his hand and screamed. The air turned wild as wind howled through the room. Papers flew, lights flickered, and a blinding white light engulfed them. For 10–15 seconds, their vision disappeared entirely. Everything turned pitch black.

Suddenly, the portal ripped open like a tear in space and time. As soon as it appeared, Justin and Jessy exchanged a silent nod and jumped in, vanishing into the blinding void alongside Mr. Keery, Ivan, and James.

Sharon and Mikk opened their eyes as the light faded. They quickly realized Justin and Jessy were gone. It didn't take long to understand—they had followed the others through the portal into the Texas Lab.

Inside the Texas Lab

The portal flared open again inside a cold, metallic hallway. With a loud thud, Mr. Keery, James, Ivan, Justin, and Jessy landed hard on the concrete floor.

Mr. Keery groaned, struggling to his feet. His eyes widened in disbelief when he saw Justin and Jessy.

Mr. Keery: "What the hell? Why the fuck did you come here?"

Justin (defensive but calm): "We just wanted to help. That's it."

"Enough with your help!" Mr. Keery snapped, his voice sharp with anger.

Justin: "Listen to me. We'll distract the soldiers. You both shoot when they're distracted. That'll reduce the risk."

James: "And what about you two? How the hell will you save yourselves?"

Jessy (firmly): "Justin and I will stay together. We'll sneak under tables, make noises—draw their attention. That's when you shoot. We'll also help look for Hazel and her mom. Meanwhile, Ivan can focus on finding more capsules. Sound fair, Mr. Keery?"

Mr. Keery looked at them, frustrated but impressed by their resolve.

Mr. Keery: "Fine. But take care of yourselves. If those soldiers see you, they won't hesitate to shoot."

Justin and Jessy: "Yes, absolutely. We'll be careful."

Ivan: "Okay. Let's move ahead."

As they walked down the hallway, the sound of their slippers echoed loudly against the floor. The noise was too risky. Realizing this, everyone quickly removed their slippers and left them in a corner of the hall, continuing barefoot.

The Texas Lab was eerily quiet. The walls were lined with old machines, some broken, others humming softly. Ivan noticed a door beside him and silently entered. He looked around carefully—no capsules. Just old computers and blueprints.

Meanwhile, Jessy and Justin moved further down the hallway. They stopped at two separate doors and peeked inside. Both rooms were empty.

After the initial hallway, the group entered the main lab. Large tables were filled with half-finished machines and dusty blueprints. Ivan scanned the area and spotted a glowing vial—it was a Texas Lab capsule.

He picked it up carefully.

Ivan: "From here on, we should be really careful. I don't know why, but there's a strange peace here. Too strange."

Mr. Keery: "Alright. We split up now. Justin, Jessy, you're with me. We'll head west. Ivan, James, you take the east wing."

Everyone: "Okay."

Ivan: "Make sure to search for capsules too."

Justin: "We'll look."

Just then, a loud growling noise echoed from both directions. It was deep, guttural—and unnatural.

James (panicked): "Dude… what the fuck was that?"

Mr. Keery: "Maybe it's just equipment."

Justin quickly took out his walkie-talkie and tossed it to Ivan.

Justin: "Take this. Stay in contact."

Ivan: "Got it. I'll keep you all updated."

Mr. Keery: "Smart of you, kid."

Jessy activated her walkie-talkie and clipped it to her belt.

The group then split—heading in opposite directions.

Ivan and James moved cautiously. The corridor was long, cold, and lined with flickering lights. It smelled like rust and chemicals. Their bare feet made soft taps against the cold floor. James gripped his flashlight tightly, its dim beam casting long shadows.

Ivan glanced at James a few times, trying to stay calm.

James (softly): "It's so weird. Just a few days ago, I was thinking about passing my exams... and now here I am—in the Texas Lab, holding a damn gun."

Ivan (nodding): "Same here. Sometimes I think maybe I'll just wake up in my bed... and this is all a bad dream."

James (smiling slightly): "I wish that were true, dude."

They walked past a closed metal door. Both paused.

Ivan (whispering): "Are you scared, James?"

James looked straight at Ivan, his expression sincere.

James: "Yeah. I'm scared as hell. But it helps because you're here. I don't feel alone."

Ivan was caught off guard. He breathed out slowly, relieved.

Ivan: "I thought I was the only one scared. Everyone thinks I'm brave just because I can open portals. But that doesn't mean I'm not terrified."

James: "We stick together. We'll protect each other. Okay?"

Ivan (nodding): "Yes. Together."

Justin (looking around, confused): "Why is the lab completely empty? It's like... no one's been here in years."

Suddenly, a loud, monstrous growl echoed nearby—this time, much closer.

The group froze, their eyes wide in fear.
