Chapter 43 - Whispering Shadows and Silent Promises

(ZEMURA – A BL Omegaverse Horror Fantasy)

By Koushambi Debnath

Lately, Shen Seizan had been strangely absent—physically present, yet mentally drifting far away. Both Kin and Vixen had started noticing the change in him. He would stare into nothingness, lips mumbling inaudible things, as if conversing with shadows no one else could see.

One night, just before bed, Kin asked Vixen to check on Shen—to see if he had settled in for the night. Vixen walked down the hallway and slowly opened Shen's door.

What he saw sent a chill down his spine.

Shen was sitting on his bed, back slightly arched, head tilted down, muttering to himself in a language unknown, face hidden as he faced the wall. His entire posture looked… unnatural. Not like himself. Not human even.

"Shen!" Vixen called out sharply.

Shen slowly turned his head towards him—his eyes lifeless and wide—and gave him a disturbingly eerie smile that made Vixen freeze for a moment.

Without hesitation, Vixen released his pheromones—calm, protective, Alpha energy flooding the room, attempting to pull Shen back from whatever dark abyss had taken hold of him. For a moment, the shadows seemed to waver. Shen blinked—and then gasped, as if waking from a nightmare.

The door burst open just then. Kin, panting and concerned, had rushed in.

"What's going on, love?" he asked Vixen, catching the overwhelming scent of his Alpha pheromones still lingering in the air.

"Come," Vixen said softly, "Let me explain everything outside."

But Kin wasn't ready to leave yet. He walked up to Shen, gently placed a hand on his head, and gave a weak, hopeful smile.

"Friend, get well soon, please. The three of us still have to go to that mountain for a picnic, remember?"

Shen stared at him for a moment before letting out a soft laugh. "Can't we go tomorrow instead?"

Kin chuckled nervously. "Nope. Vixen has work, and I've got an online meeting with a producer about my new album. Tomorrow's not a good day, buddy."

There was a pause.

Then Shen's voice dropped into a haunting whisper.

"Kin… if I die before then, please take my body back to my hometown. But… don't tell my parents. Don't tell them I died."

Kin froze.

"No—what the hell are you saying?!" Kin nearly shouted, his voice trembling. "You idiot! You think I'll let something happen to you while I'm still breathing? While Vixen's still here?"

His hands tightened into fists as he fought the fear rising in his throat.

"We'll fight together, Shen. No matter what darkness is haunting you… we'll save you. And remember—evil never wins. Not when we're together."

Kin leaned forward, wrapping Shen briefly in a warm hug, and whispered, "You stay strong, okay? No shadow can touch you if you don't let it in."

With that, Kin stepped out of the room and closed the door quietly behind him.

Vixen was waiting.

He had heard every word.

"I won't let anything happen to your best friend," Vixen said gently. "No matter what it takes, I will save Shen Seizan."

Kin's voice broke slightly, but he nodded. "And I'll protect him too. And I'll protect you."

Vixen smiled—a soft, tired, affectionate smile—and took Kin's hands in his.

Pulling Kin close, he placed a gentle kiss on his forehead.

"Kin… don't you think it's time we got married?"

Kin's eyes widened in disbelief. "W-What… now?"

Vixen chuckled. "Okay, maybe not married right away. But how about we get engaged?"

Kin blinked. And then slowly, a smile stretched across his lips—an expression of pure love and happiness, amidst all the fear and darkness.

"Yes," he whispered. "Yes, I want that. I want you. I just… I wasn't sure if we could, in times like these."

"Then let's do it," Vixen said, still holding him close. "Even in the darkest times, love can be our light."

And in that moment—within the cursed walls of Zemura, under a sky heavy with secrets—they held onto each other. As the shadows circled, love rooted them stronger.

But little did they know, the darkness was not done yet.
