Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: Betrayal from the vice captain

Kon stood on the deck of the Going Merry as it approached the Baratie.

"I see it! The ship has a fish mast like our sheep mast. I can already smell the delicious food." He shouted

The Going Merry stopped near the restaurant. Jango said, "You guys should go. I will keep an eye on the ship."

Everyone nodded as Jango heart was moved again by the trust the strawhats were showing him. He had been a black cat pirates members and he might steal the ship back. But they trusted him to keep the ship safe. He vowed to be loyal to the crew.

Luffy led the way to the restaurant, grinning under his straw hat, while Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Kon along with Goku followed, their footsteps clanking on the gangplank.

Inside, they found an empty table near the center of the bustling restaurant.

Waiters in white shirts rushed between tables, and the smell of grilled meat and fresh bread filled the air.

Kon plopped into a chair, grabbing a menu, his eyes scanning for desserts. Luffy sat beside him, flipping through the menu, while Usopp, Nami and Zoro settled across.

A yellow-haired man with curly eyebrows and a black suit approached, his eyes locking onto Nami.

He bowed dramatically, a cigarette dangling from his lips. "Ah, a beautiful mademoiselle, it would be a pleasure to serve you."

'What a vision,' he thought, hearts practically dancing in his eyes. "I'm Sanji. Your order?"

Nami smirked, unfazed. "Fish stew and a glass of wine." 'He's a flirt, but I'll take the free attention,' she thought, handing back the menu.

Zoro leaned back, smirking. "Grilled swordfish. And a jug of ale."

Usopp adjusted his goggles. "Spaghetti for me." *

Luffy slammed his menu down, grinning. "Meat! Lots of it! Steaks, ribs, anything you've got!"

Kon waved his menu as he pointed to Goku, "Banana toast and a banana milkshake for Goku!" He paused, then grinned wider.

"For me, sweets! Gimme a chocolate lava cake, mango sticky rice, caramel flan, strawberry shortcake, lemon tarts, blueberry pie, and… oh, a giant pile of mochi! I also need some protein or Mom would be mad so some meat too."

"Make it quick, I'm starving!"

Sanji raised an eyebrow, scribbling the order. "That's… a lot of sweets."

The food arrived, plates piled high. Kon and Luffy dove in, swallowing their meals in giant bites, barely chewing. Kon's mochi disappeared in seconds, and Luffy's stack of ribs vanished just as fast.

'This is heaven,' Kon thought, licking caramel off his fingers. Goku slurped his milkshake, chattering happily, while Zoro finished his ale in seconds and asked for more.

Nami savored her stew, keeping an eye on the crew. 'They're gonna eat us broke. Wait, do we even have money to pay for the food?Maybe Luffy has some. He is the captain after all.' she thought, sighing.

Luffy leaned back, patting his stomach. "Wow, did you make this food? You should join our crew as a cook!"

'This guy's food is Pirate King-worthy,' he thought, grabbing another steak. Sanji watched in awe as Luffy devoured the huge meal in seconds.

Kon nodded, mouth full of flan. "Yeah, join us! This is yummy!"

Both of them called for seconds with a wave.

Sanji smirked, lighting a new cigarette as he walked off. "Thanks, but I'm good here."

Kon shouted after him, "It's yummy!!!"

'He's gotta join,' he thought, shoving more pie in his mouth.

A waiter approached, holding a bill. "Time to pay up." Kon turned to Nami, grinning. "Nami, pay 'em for such tasty food!"

Nami's jaw dropped as she panicked,"What do you mean, pay them? I don't have any money!"

Luffy and Kon exchanged a glance, their faces blank. "Uh-oh," Luffy said, scratching his head.

'Did we forget money?' he thought, laughing nervously.

Nami's eyes widened, realization hitting. "Don't tell me you came here without a single Berry!" She groaned, slapping her forehead.

"Aghh!" 'I'm stuck with broke morons,' she thought, her dreams of treasure crumbling. She looked at the waiter who had already gone inside the kitchen. The waiter dealt with broke pirates who refused to pay up and he knew the procedure to handle them. Bring in the big gun!

The waiter returned with a gruff man in a tall chef's hat, his wooden leg thumping. "I'm Zeff, head chef. My man says you're having trouble paying."

'Freeloaders, huh?' he thought, crossing his arms.

Nami sighed, defeated. "We don't have money to pay for the food."

Zeff's eyes narrowed. "Well, then you can wash dishes for a week to cover it. With this much food, maybe a month. Who's volunteering?"

Before he finished, Kon pointed at Luffy, whistling innocently, avoiding eye contact.

"He's our captain," Kon said,

'Sorry, Luffy, you're the boss!' he thought, stifling a laugh.

Luffy's face fell, betrayal in his eyes. "Kon!"

'My own vice-captain sold me out,' he thought, pouting as Zeff nodded.

"Oh, is that so? Then the captain's responsible. He'll wash dishes."

Zeff pointed Luffy to the kitchen.

Luffy trudged off, muttering, "This is so unfair."

'I just wanted meat,' he thought, grabbing a sponge.

Five days passed, with Luffy scrubbing pots while the crew helped around the Baratie. The rest of the crew had to help if they wanted to pay for the bill faster.

Kon swept floors, sneaking bites of leftovers, while Goku followed, stealing crumbs.

'These scraps are almost as good as the real thing,' Kon thought, licking his fingers.

Zoro and Usopp served tables, grumbling. 'This is humiliating,* Zoro thought, carrying a tray. 'I'm a swordsman, not a waiter.'

On the fifth day, a shout echoed through the restaurant. "Don Krieg's pirate fleet is here!" Patrons screamed, dropping forks and fleeing, chairs toppling.

'Krieg? That is the pirate with more than a dozen ship in his fleet and at least a thousand men. We are so dead!'Usopp thought, hiding behind a table.

Don Krieg, a tall man in golden armor, stormed in with a gaunt man named Gin, both looking starved.

Krieg fell to his knees, his voice hoarse. "Please… food. We won't attack if you feed us."

The staff, led by a cook named Patty, protested. "Feed Krieg? He'll betray us!"

Sanji stepped forward, his face serious, carrying a bowl of rice. "No one deserves to go hungry, starving or not," he said, handing it to Krieg. "Eat."

Sanji's memories of hunger resurfaced tightening his chest. 'No one should feel that pain.'

Krieg grabbed the bowl, devouring the rice, tears streaming down his face. 'This is salvation,' he thought, his hunger easing.

Kon, peeking from behind a table, whispered to Luffy, who'd snuck out of the kitchen. "He's eating like us!"

But as soon as Krieg finished, his eyes hardened.

He stood, wiping his mouth, and barked, "Feed my hundred men! Then vacate the Baratie. Our ship's damaged, and I'm taking this one!" His pirates flooded in, weapons drawn, their laughter menacing.

The staff gasped, Patty shouting, "You traitor!"

'Knew he'd pull this,' he thought, raising his ladle. Sanji clenched his fists, his kindness betrayed. 'I fed him, and this is how he repays us?' he thought, his cigarette burning brighter.

Kon, still crouched, grinned at Luffy. "We can save them from these pirates and get Sanji to join us."

'We'll be heroes and get a cook,' he thought,

Luffy's grin matched Kon's as he cracked his knuckles.
