Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: First Trial

-----------

Hori emerged from sleep, her eyelids heavy as she gently rubbed them.

The surface beneath her was cold, almost too smooth to be natural. She blinked and examined her surroundings.

The floor was colored black obsidian, while above her, the sky was an endless blue, brushed with faint white gradients, resembling a painting of some sorts.

The wind smelled like clay, with a hint of smoke. Almost as if the floor was manufactured.

"...Huh? What just happened?"

She sluggishly stood up scratching her head. The last thing she remembered was Sir Scott wishing them luck. Then the chime of a kitchen bell sounded, knocking her out.

"Where did everyone-

She suddenly felt gravity shift. Her sense of balance tripped, Hori was about falling off from where the road seemed to have stopped.

Her eyes widened. The "ground" she stood on wasn't a field at all. But the edge of a colossal column 100 meters into the sky!

Using her toes to desperately grasp the floor, she was left facing the actual floor which laid a great distance away. Like a grave given she fell.

The fear from such heights provided Hori enough adrenaline to immediately force her body to back up. As if resisting gravity, she managed not to fall to her deaths.

"Oh my God—!" She gasped, collapsing onto the cold floor.

Hori's stomach lurched, panic surged through her chest as she crawled backwards to safety.

"Narrator? Would you care to explain?!"

She asked with dread, Narrator should have the answer to what was happening.

As if summoned, the voice chimed in.

Narrator - Stop being clueless Hori, this is the first trial of the Sabbath Exams.

Hori then remembered, Sir Scott was just wishing them luck on the first trial. Of course this would be part of the exams.

After understanding the situation, she stood up, dusted her bum and took a deep breath.

Hori searched the surface where she stood for anything other than her.

Something caught her eye—a glint of red in the distance.

"... what's that?" Hori ran towards it and found a rod more than twice her height.

She picked it up, surprisingly it had no weight, no scent either.

Hori brought it to her tongue then shook her head. "Nope, I'm not licking random objects!" She scolded herself for even attempting it

"What am I meant to do with this...." Hori asked her self. Weren't participants supposed to be given some type of goal or something?

She decided to sit on the floor, crossed leg with the rod on her lap. Waiting for some sort of instruction.

After 2 minutes. Hori looked closely at the rod and noticed something.

"... it's shrinking."

She squinted her eyes, her observation correct.

The rod wasn't static, its length had shortened—barely, but enough for her sharp eyes to notice.

With a new discovery she stood up and thought to herself.

'A reducing rod, some sort of timer?'

She paced left and right, trying to solve the puzzle.

Just then, as if timed, a loud voice boomed across the sky, nearly deafening her.

It's deep tone shared new information.

Hori staggered back from the sudden sound.

Still reeling from the volume she said. "A timer! So I was right!" With a smug face.

The rod was no ordinary staff, but a countdown.

"That must be the announcer, he sounds so familiar! Narrator, could you tell me whose voice that was?"

Hori asked, she was certain to have heard it before. When living with her father.

Narrator - Bishop number 5; Tadashi Shiba is the announcer for this year's Sabbath Exams.

Her mouth dropped. "Uncle Shiba?!"

Hori squealed. Her father being the head of SHO Japan, was aquatinted with multiple men of power. First Eric Adams, now Tadashi Shiba. People who Hori didn't know were Bishops.

Tadashi Shiba, nicknamed the "Man In Milk" is the man last shown offering to place a bet on Hori's match during the preliminary rounds. Also the man showed to be scrolling through this years participants of the Sabbath Exams. Sir Scott being Bishop number 6, meant he was lower in ranking to Mr Shiba.

"I already knew Uncle Shiba worked for SHO, but I didn't know he was a Bishop!"

Hori was surprised, she only learned about the term "Bishop" after meeting Haruki. Up until now, she had always called strong priests "Strong priests" who knew she had already known a Bishop during her childhood.

Mr Shiba, now acting as the announcer for this years Exams spoke again.

As soon as he announced such terrible news, Hori's blood ran cold.

"Two hundred... and seven?!"

She staggered. Her mind replayed the moment, when she woke up, Hori laid at the far edge. If she rolled even a bit....

'it couldn't be... did SHO intend for people to fall to their deaths? that would be the only explanation for placing us so close to the edge, no wonder so many contestants have died already!'

Hori asked Narrator if that were the case.

She answered.

Narrator - Hori guessed correctly. By eliminating as much contestants as possible, SHO would have to pay only a small amount of people who somehow manage to survive every trial.

"Isn't that just wrong?"

She said with a face full of despair, SHO was sounding less and less than an organization that hunted Sins.

Seeing as they committed so much on their own, first accepting bribe from participants. Then permitting doping, now assisted murder.

Hori had clearly taken in the gravity of her situation, by recognizing death as a part of the Sabbath Exams. She was grateful she didn't fall as well.

The announcer, Mr Shiba continued.

Hori sat on the floor to pay attention, missing his announcement would be bad news.

The Announcer continued.

He stated with an emotionless tone.

Hori wasn't aware of this news, she really should have visited the site.

In other words, "moderation">

He paused, allowing unaware participants like Hori to digest the information so far.

How creative, making each trial represent a virtue! This was SHOs tradition, the Sin Hunting Organization did this to ensure they had the best of the best of humans from each trial.

Hori was impressed with their creativity. Also excited of what virtues the remaining 6 trials would represent.

The Announcer continued after pausing for a minute.

"I noticed that Uncle Shiba!"

Hori replied, raising her hand as if in a class room.

"Why didn't he say so earlier?!"

Hori quickly looked at her rod and noticed it had reduced a little, about 2 feet from its original 10.

She quickly stood up.

"Okay! This isn't hard, I just have to find the finishing pillar."

She scanned the endless expanse of pillars—but no end in sight, still, standing idly wasn't an option.

Clutching the weightless rod in one hand, she crouched low.

"I'll just go straight, then jump to the next pillar. I'll repeat the process until I see the finish line...here we go!"

Hori sprinted to the edge of her pillar then leaped to the next.

Each pillar was randomly placed, but all had an average distance of about 2 meters. Reaching the next pillar wasn't impressive, but having the courage to actually jump was.

Thud!

She landed on the next pillar in front, slightly wobbling but immediately fell to the ground.

Sweat fell from her face to the black surface. That was too scary.

Hori stood up and quickly examined her body for injuries. There were none. Another leap, then another....

Until—

"E-ehm, e... excuse me...ma'am..!"

A feeble voice came from behind.

Startled, Hori spun to see who it was.

It was that black haired, nose mask wearing girl who greeted Hori in the large hall after passing the Preliminary Rounds.

"My..mmy....n... nnnname is Suika...! N...n....nice to meet you!"

The girl managed to say, trembling as if Hori was some monster.

Hori squinted, noticing her mismatched eyes—one green, the other orange. Weren't they both red before?

".... what's wrong with your eyes?"

Hori asked, worried. She had never seen someone with different colored pupils.

"Their contacts!" Suika yelled embarrassed.

She cleared her throat and suddenly struck a pose as if possessed.

"Greetings, mortals!" Suika declared, her voice ringing out across the empty area.

"I am Tensai Suika! Tensai written with the kanji 天才 meaning genius! And Suika written with the katakana スイカ meaning watermelon! Yours truly is the Chosen One, the Bringer of Light, the Wielder of the Ancient Arts! You may tremble before my greatness, but do not fear, your's shall use my powers for the betterment of all humanity!" She yelled with fiery eyes, her black hair fluttering in the breeze, as she posed like an anime character....unfortunately, Suika was a chunibyio, a Japanese term for cringy kids.

Hori stared and thought to herself from Suikas dramatic introduction.

'Wasn't she shy just now? Is she alright? '

She wondered with a worried expression. Suika still posing with closed eyes, cringing from what she just did.

Hori sighed, smiled back and introduced herself imitating Suika.

She raised her hands to the heavens, her folded tracksuit sleeves fluttered like wings, and her eyes glowed with imaginary light.

"Behold, mortals! Inori Hori stands before you!" She declared, her voice even more bold and audible than Suikas.

"Inori written 祈りmeaning prayer! And Hori written 堀 meaning moat! I am the Guardian to all, the Bringer of Salvation, the Wielder of the Sacred Rite! You may tremble before my divine presence, but do not fear, for I shall protect you from the darkness that lurks within the shadows!"

Hori gave an outstanding introduction, leaving Suika mesmerize. Her own earlier awkwardness vanished upon seeing Hori act chunni with zero embarrassment.

Hori returned to a running pose and grinned.

"See you later, genius watermelon!"

She called Suikas full name by reading the kanji.

"A...ah, www... wait...!"

Suika half-yelled, stopping Hori again.

Hori turned, now with an annoyed expression.

"Ehm... I'm sorry, b...but you didn't happen to hear the rules from the announcer just now did you?"

Suika asked.

"You mean from Uncle Shiba? Yes I heard them, didn't you?"

Hori said. Suika, surprised Hori knew the announcers real name and status. Further even calling him Uncle?!

"E....ehm.... could you please explain the rules to me...?!

She bowed.

"You've got to be kidding me. Didn't you hear them?!"

Hori yelled, how could someone not hear such a loud speaker.

Suika, embarrassed explained that she was asleep until not long ago. Evident from the crazy eye bags she owned. Suika most likely stayed up late last night watching God knows what.

Hori glanced at her reducing rod and sighed, agreeing to explain the rules, she was going to make it quick.

"a..ahh, th.. thank you so much!"

Suika bowed as low as possible, showing her gratitude.

"It's fine," Hori dismissed. "Just don't let your rod touch the ground, and don't let it reduce to nothing, meaning it's a timer. Get to the finish line before it reduces to nothing."

She finished only to see Suika fast asleep.

"Tensai! Wake up! Did you even hear what I just said?!" Hori yelled, almost slapping Suika with her deadly hands.

"Ah!...ahhh I'm awake! Sorry I'm... I'm just soooo sleepy...."

She dosed off again.

This was ridiculous, Hori decided to leave only for Suika to plead once more. With annoyance, Hori suggested Suika use the Bribery System. She was clearly sleep deprived.

Only for Suika to say she was saving her money for the deadly trials, just like Mrs Akane.

"Fine, do what you want then. I'm leaving!" Hori half yelled and leaped to the next pillar in front.

"W—wait for me!" Suika rushed and jumped as well.

Hori squatted and was about jumping to the next when she heard a cry for help.

Suika had attempted jumping but tripped! Her feet slipped on the smooth obsidian surface. Almost falling off, Hori yelled.

"Oh no!"

She immediately rushed to her and caught her hand. She held it tightly making sure Suika didn't slip, as she pulled her back up to the pillars surface.

"Are you okay?!" Hori asked panting. That was too close for comfort.

Suika froze until her eyes suddenly turned watery. She started crying. Her wails muffled by the nose mask she wore.

"Ah, please don't cry. It's okay, You're still alive!"

She tried consoling the terrified girl. Who from the looks of it was about the same age as Hori.

After some petting, Suika wiped her tears.

"Th—that was too scary! What is wrong with this exams?!"

She yelled with snot in in her nose.

Suika decided to use the Bribery System after all. She wasn't the type of person to face such challenges.

She stood up and bowed to Hori in appreciation for her time.

"I...I'm so sorry for wasting your till now! Yours truly shall just use the Bribery System."

Suika waved Hori and announced to the sky.

"Ehm... announcer?! I'd like to use the Bribery System!"

She waved hoping for a reply. Just then, the kitchen bell chimed again ting~ then stood a Hataki who appeared as soon as the bell rang. Just like the participants teleportation. That bell must have had some ability.

The Hataki asked for Suikas hand to which she complied. Waving Hori one last time yelling. "See you later friend!"

Ting~

They vanished.

"What an odd girl." Hori said, relieved Suika was now out of trouble.

She glanced at her red rod in her hands and saw it was now HALF its original length!
